Oh, sorry, I just noticed this, but I put a video out last month on roll ins! --> ua-cam.com/video/2SyLmDhVlIE/v-deo.html Thought you would like to know :)
Probably the best vid on the topic I've ever watched. Thank you! I'm an old fart, learning to do it and I'm currently at exactly this basic level, having successfully mastered a few correct drop ins, and kick turns like described. Huge boost for me to watch how it's done, seems I'm on the right track then.
+Anders1236 Props on getting your drop ins dude! It only gets more fun from here :) When you're ready to step it up, I would recommend looking into either backside rock n rolls or rock to fakies. Thanks for the kind words by the way!
I've skated since middle school and now I'm 26 and decided to start again but no matter what I've always been scared of the drop in. I always stuck with leveled rails and flat ramps so soon im gonna put this video to good use and practice the drop in. I really really wanna start skating the mini ramps so I just need to get over my fear and just do it! Thank you so much for this video!
Here's some help on dropping in. I can drop in on flat only, so I don't know how much this will help on vert, but the #1 key to dropping in is to SLAM DOWN. When setting up a drop in, I make sure that my balls of my feet match up with the top part of the tail, just behind the bend where the board hits the tail. NOT on the crease, but a little bit behind it. When putting your front foot on though, what I do is put my foot on the board with zero weight on it, then I take my front foot about an inch/few centimeters off, then immediately SLAM my front foot down on the board, and as I'm doing that, I take all the weight off my back foot, then put some weight back on when all four wheels hit the ground in order to do kick turns. For any beginners, a good way to practice this trick is to find a place where you can put your board half on concrete/smooth ground, and half on grass/soft ground. I then do the drop in onto the concrete side. After I get used to that, I do it the other way around. After that, I hold something while on smooth ground fully, then drop in. And after that, I do the real thing. Now, the funny thing is, I couldn't commit to it for a couple of weeks after I got to the final stage of practice (I did all the practice steps in one day) I set up, then my mind just drifted off, and I didn't focus on what I was doing, and just did the drop in. When doing the drop in, you cant focus on it, because then you get scared and walk away. Instead, try to daydream in a sense, and just let your body take over. If it sounds like I'm tripping, it's because it's 2:30 am, but not focusing on it actually helped me. I hope this advice helps y'all, goodnight.
Great video, started skating skating again after twenty five years and found your videos to be the most informative. Much easier to understand the fundamentals when explained with correct physics terms.
So glad I found your channel now, there's a serious lack of good mini ramp tutoruals. Yours are amazing, very well made, very thought through, real nice. And you are still making them! Thanks!
I just want to thank you a lot!! Today was my second day at the skate park and my skills increassed a lot thanks to your advices. Practiced my pumping technique and also rotation backside on the ramp. I felt the difference between skating without pumping and with the pump. :) I lovethe sk8 board again
really useful, thanks - just started skating at 50, am at the stage of rolling up and back in fakie; next = kickturns. Hardest thing is finding somewhere quiet to practice.
Rat Crew Are you able to drop in yet? Once you get past that, it opens up a whole world of fun stuff :) In case you're curious, the first tricks I would recommend learning: Rock to Fakie Fakie Tail Stall Axle Stall
Justin Lauria Ive practiced dropping in on a smaller incline but still have trouble commiting my weight to my front foot. Ill get a few successful drop ins on the smaller inclne but then i go back to not commiting the weight. Ima keep practicing still i do it consistently. Ive practiced pumping in the mini ramp to get the feel for it. Thanks for the trick suggestions ill definitely try learning those once i build up to actually dropping in on the mini ramp.
Rat Crew That's really good, man. While skateboarding does have its moments where you have to push past your fear and try something your mind won't let you do, you have to know when you're ready (and usually you really do know whether or not you're ready), so props for building up to dropping in the right way.
awesome video. I'm 41 years old and i decided to skate again. Last time i was on a board was 20 years ago, skated competitive street, but living in the city there were no parks. Now i live in the suburbs and i have a park to skate so I'm limited to what i can skate. this is definitely an awesome tutorial..
I am kinda old (27) but just started skating. I went to the park yesterday and was just trying to kick-turn consistently. A younger kid came up to me and asked how long I had been skating. When I told him only a few weeks he was very relived. Thanks for the tips
The city just built a new skatepark and i would like to skate there often. riding a carver, it looked quiet different to work out from regular skateboards but this vid explained it all, thanks.
Liking this video man. Been skating on and off for about 9 years but never got around to learning anything more than dropping in when it came to park skating. Now I work night shifts 30 seconds away from some decent halfpipes so I'm giving it a shot at long last aha Looking forward to more videos on pipe skating!
at 04:44 I think this move is a great state of mind when learning to tailstall, as it shows how to shift weight, and almost trick the mind, to get 'out' of the ramp? Just a thought.
Great video¡ I'm 37 years old and I'm trying to learn with my 7 years old son. I can do that in street, but skate park still hard for me. I'll try to do your advices for the next time. Thanks for share.
NSI Skateboarding [Justin Lauria] thanks!!! What a day! I DROPPED IN THOOO for a streak of smooth sailing and trying out the rock to fakie then I hesitated later and hurt this wrist that’s OK I’ll be trying again !! Your videos are a huge help ! I’m a 21 year old woman so I don’t exactly have a ton of friends who like to skate and learn from 😂 (Yet!) so this is great 👍
I'm a girl and I've been skating for 6 months now. No one ever laughed at me, and everybody help me when I need it.. no matter if you're a boy or a girl, real skaters will always help you and give you advice
By far, best "How To" series on UA-cam. You seem to be based out of Austin. What's the park you are at in the very first clip? I'm visiting Austin in September and want hit up some spots.
Love these videos , they are teaching me so much as a beginner , and a lot of the videos are from the park I skate at in ATX 😃👊🏻🤘🏻! Hope I bump into you some day man , you rock .
this was really helpful, it had exactly what i was looking for, it wasn't to long, and it got straight to the points. this was a great video, i just subbed and liked, so keep up the great work :)
I remember my first time trying to drop in, I ended up doing the wrong thing by staring down, then someone came up from behind and pushed me down, ended up falling off the board breaking my arm and my leg. I haven't tried since then, but been thinking about trying again. This is so in depth and with many tips I will try so that I will hopefully successfully drop in.
Are you serious?! That is the most horrifying story I've ever heard! It is easier if someone doesn't PUSH you, but man, I would have waited until my bones healed and then punched that person right in the face! Even if he/she was trying to help, it's just not their decision (sorry for being so upset). I'm glad that you've mentally moved past that day, because your mind plays a huge part in skateboarding and you eventually will have to overcome the fear of possibly getting hurt again. If you play it smart, you should be just fine this time (normally when I fall on anything and actually get hurt, for some reason it makes me less afraid to try it again because I feel like I know what to avoid doing now). Best of luck on your next attempt (if you need it haha)!
Great video. I have to put my front foot over the front bolts on an angle, for better balance. Also, I can't think of leaving forward a lot, I felt forward and bruised my ribs.
Justin super great job now I don't have to do my own how to video,u cover it all dawg,I say covet it all because nice job for a brand new person there s a couple of things that I could add, really just one people don't realize new skaters you don't lean back to lift the front of your board you stay center and lift you front leg and push down on your tail, but dude the flat land tip is the bomb I was ten or eleven when I first went to a skate park and I did so much flat land stuff till a pro happen to come to skate the half pipe and I was lucky enuf to gets some schooling. The other thing I use to focus on was pushing on my back foot when I dropped just so my brain new the back of my board wasn't gonna move till I was on it and away, but great video I love how you did a great job of showing ramp size on of the other balance tricks I used to do is flat ground grab the front of my board tail stand and one eighty kick turn on my tail only all wheels in the air it a good one your on the ground and it gets you comfy moving on your board like you will later when get to airs or kick turns and I practice a tail stall, great work that should get them going from zero to having fun safely...see ya.
When I first started getting into mini ramp skating, my arms would flail around wildly, sometimes way up in the air and never having any kind of consistency, but once I started watching footage of me doing that, I started to put a little bit of energy focusing on keeping them more down at my sides as much as I could, and it made my style look a lot more controlled and effortless. Takes practice though, and it's hard to get it just right haha.
Justin, I viewed this video several times looking for clues to what I'm doing wrong. You make this seem so simple. I set a personal goal of dropping into a 10 to 15 foot quarter pipe before my next birthday when I turn 60. I have been unsuccessful dropping into a small eighth pipe. I frequently fall forward. When I roll up to the same eighth pipe from the transition, I can roll down without falling, but dropping in is challenging. Is there something I can to do make the learning curve less painful? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Mark
I’m really scared of kickturns because last week I fell and hit my head, now I wear a helmet in the bowl and I’m practicing doing them at a shallower angle but ugh it’s so scary haha
Yes, but the distinction is really between "vert ramp" and "mini ramp" (vert ramps are the 12-footers like the one Tony Hawk did a 900 on), both of which are versions of a half-pipe. Quarter pipes can be either vert or not, but a mini ramp generally refers to a small half-pipe.
Can you do it now it took me five minutes put your front foot up by the bolts my first couple times dropping in I covered 3/4 bolts on the nose leave one bolt uncovered by your foot
i can drop in successfully on banks but when it comes to mini ramps and small quarters i just cant commit to putting my front foot on and lean back and slide out. any tips?? thanks in advance
i cant keep my speed in my local bowl its 9 ft tall but its perfect the park is called blair skatepark the bowl i guess is vert and thats what i have to learn on im already comfortable with dropping in and carving.i just cant keep my speed and i always end up having to climb out of the bowl.do you have any tips?
Show how to roll in

I learned like 6 things all at once from this one video. Super education
I think your tutorial videos are some of the best on UA-cam.
My friend never learned how to stomp down when dropping in so he just does a manual all the way down and it actually looks kinda nice
That's impressive but it would cause me so much anxiety! lol

quick question: is a mini ramp different than a quarter pipe
Yes, but the distinction is really between "vert ramp" and "mini ramp" (vert ramps are the 12-footers like the one Tony Hawk did a 900 on), both of which are versions of a half-pipe. Quarter pipes can be either vert or not, but a mini ramp generally refers to a small half-pipe.
