Great video. Thank you for all that you two contribute. I have 3 notes of things that I'd like to add for security. 1) LOCK your card in the app when not in use. It's usually easy to unlock it on the phone or a computer when you need it. 2) On TAP ATMs be sure to make sure you are fully logged out of the screen before walking away from the ATM. 3) Setup ALERT text or emails on you phone for any transactions. I'd much rather get a nag alert when I get money out than miss an alert of someone trying to use my card or number when I'm sitting at the beach. Again great video and I enjoy the value you add to the community.
Hey, there's another way. You can send yourself money through Western Union for a small fee and pick it up from a local agent. I did the math, and it only costs about 1% on top of mid-market rate. (The more money you send at once, the cheaper it is.)
Great video! We do most of this. One data point is getting funds from your home bank before you leave. Depending on the trip, it may be worth getting a bit. We are hitting Thailand on a cruise and i know I will need cash but time will be tight and I wanted a bit to hit the ground. I was surprised that the rate Chase gave me was very close to market without any additional fees. Totally worth it. It may have helped I have Chase checking and cards. 💁♀️ Cheers from Cairns.
Good point about arriving by cruise ship. And since I'm also a Chase customer it's good to know they gave you a good exchange rate. Thanks for sharing.
Another way that can work very well is to take your U.S. Cash into a casino that's near or attached to an American-branded hotel like a Marriott. The exchange rates are usually very good, and there shouldn't be any kind of fee or extra conversion rate. You may have to show your passport. This continues to be my go-to method in both the Dominican Republic and the Philippines, though I haven't yet tried it elsewhere.
Excellent advice. I'm an Aussie, so these particular banks are not available to us here. But the principles are 100% correct! You can Google the banks that offer fee-free debit cards that might be available in your own country, whatever that is, and also check the various exchange rates that each one offers (it can vary quite unbelievably). It can change over time, too, so best to double check just before you go.
@@lilkeaty7285 You used to be able to do this with 28° Latitude, but they have completely changed their model this year, charging monthly account fees and offering "rewards". Westpac Worldwide Wallet offers fee-free withdrawals from their network ATMs worldwide, including Bank of America, and others (there is one bank in most countries belonging to their network). However, their exchange rate is not as good as that of a travel debit card, eg Suncorp Everyday Options. And I think ING bank also offers ATM fee rebates, certainly in Australia and I think also internationally - but you have to fulfil Conditions (monthly) in order to qualify for those. I have an ING account, but won't be using my card overseas. And I recently cancelled my 28° credit card, and opened a Suncorp Everyday Options account with a travel debit card - which I have not yet used overseas, but it is good for online purchases, with a very good exchange rate and no foreign exchange fees, & will be my card of choice to use for card point-of-sale transactions internationally, and perhaps for cash withdrawals (at least as a backup option). And I will probably get the Westpac one as the primary card for ATM withdrawals - but it will depend how easy it is to find ATMs in their network in whatever country I go to. NB This is from my notes on the Wise card: -Two international ATM withdrawals of up to $350 in total fee-free every 30 days. After that, a fee of 1.75% of the amount and $1.50 per additional withdrawal applies. $10 debit card fee for your first Visa or Mastercard. Foreign exchange fees start at 0.43% depending on the currency.
Axos only offers 4 free ATM withdrawals per month internationally. Plus, you have to maintain a 75K USD balance. That's HSBC territory and is too rich for my blood.
@@ExtraGuac007 The Essential Free account has free ATM withdrawals worldwide. I believe you might be looking at the World Checking. I've had my account for over 20 years.
Most countries let you use a credit card at least at a hotel. Get your cash at the airport. You can pay for your taxi and get some food. Schwab fidelity USAA and Navy federal all work. I have never had any problems
If you are military veteran, USAA checking debit card has no ATM Fee. In addition, they refund other bank's ATM fee on your debit card up to 6 times per month.
We have enjoyed following your channel for the last two years as we prepared for our own slow travel life. Does Axos reimburse international ATM fees? I only see reference to reimbursing Domestic US ATM fees. Keep up the great videos, they have taught us a lot! Thanks!
Where does the Wise card come into play? I got mine before going to the Philippines last year and loaded it with $100 in local currency as a back-up but never used it. My Chase Reserve card doesn't have any foreign transaction fees and it worked fine.
Excellent video!! Such great advice - I learned the hard way 25 years ago traveling about 'cash advance' on a credit card - that was a nice wake up. What I learned today was it was okay to go to the ATM at an aiport. Do you usually find a 'bank' ATM at the aiport? thank you!!!
Even no fee debit/ATM cards do have currency exchange fee of 1% of total money withdrawn. No fee means $2-3 fee to use ATM machine of other banks. This, they will waive or refund, but they still charge the currency exchange fee of 1-3% of withdrawal.

Axos Bank has unlimited DOMESTIC
ATM fee reimbursements, but not international. You didn’t mention that in your video.
That's AxIs Bank that charges, not AxOs Bank. My Axis account has no ATM fees.

We're Aussies too, and it's got us wondering if any Australian banks offer ATM fee rebates (we mostly use Wise just now).
