  • Perhaps the greatest of the Ealing comedies, this blackly humorous multiple murder farce is best known for Alec Guinness's eight roles as all the D'ascoyne family victims, but it's really murderous lead Dennis Price who walks away with the acting honors.

I may have seen Kind hearts and Coronets a hundred times since an old English couple recommended it to me, and I discover new elements of comedy every time. Simply superb.

Dennis Price was superb in this movie. Nice to hear somebody give his performance the recognition it deserves. The same applies to the multi talented Miles Malleson.

Dennis Price's narration, with its cynical but elegant, almost Wildean humour, is a real delight. Three quotes among many:
"The Reverend Lord Henry was not one of those new-fangled parsons who carry the principles of their vocation uncomfortably into private life."
"It is so difficult to make a neat job of killing people with whom one is not on friendly terms."
"I was sorry about the girl, but found some relief in the reflection that she had presumably during the weekend already undergone a fate worse than death."

I love these so much, got me chuckling again, this film should be remade now that films this dark are common.

I have it on DVD and so enjoy it. I love old British movies. Joan Greenwood's voice and acting is without equal in my opinion.

Nice how John Landis appreciates Dennis Price's performance.

What is such a delight is that the film is played straight-faced. We should be horrified by all the murders and whilst we might feel sorry for some of the victims, yet we can only support and cheer Denis Price's character. The ending is quite delicious. Miles Malleson is always a delight and was an accomplished writer, actor and translator. It is good to see that many Americans can enjoy this film as much as the British. In the post-war years there was a boom in British film making. Another truly superb comedy with Alec Guinness is The Ladykillers of 1955 where again numerous characters (all ne'er-do-wells) get bumped off. Katie Johnson as the sweet old lady is a treasure. The film was remade in 2004 with a US setting - like many remakes it did not successfully capture either the charm or wit of the earlier film.

It is lovely to see Dennis Price receiving the plaudits he so richly deserved for his wonderful performance in this. He had a lovely speaking voice and the narration he supplied for this film was superb. A great performance and a truly remarkable actor, who like Alec Guinness, also played more than one role in this great film.

A truly classic movie, never has the phrase, 'they don't make them like that anymore' been more appropriate.

Kind Hearts and Coronets is pure genius. It should be given even more recognition than it has recieved to date. It surpasses even the best of Lubitsch or Wilder, to give relatable context.

I have only seen this movie once. For my money, Alec Guinness steals the picture with his portrayal of the entire D'Ayscone family.

Sir Michael Balcon was a superb producer. (Check his serious movie Pool of London which had the American Bonar Colleano starring).
Our host here has scarcely mentioned the incredible performance by Sir Alec Guinness in this movie who plays multiple members of the D'Ascoigne family.
"I am not naturally callous" was one of Louis's best lines in this.

If you like Kind Hearts and Coronets and Dennis Price in particular, then you must buy Elaine Parker's biography of Dennis, entitled "The Price of Fame" - widely available on Amazon, Ebay and many other sellers. It is a gem!!

Ealing was a great studio with great artist (Guinness,MacKendrick,Cavalcanti,Dearden,Greenwood ,Crichton etc), one of the directors ,the great british producer Michael Balcon was Daniel Day-Lewis grand-father !!
Dead of night has probably been made in Trailer from hell already, one of Bunuel favorite films, which says it all..

Valerie Hobson went on to have her own first hand experience of a sex scandal, as she married John Profumo in 1952 who was at the centre of the 1961 Profumo affair. However, they remained married until her death in 1998.
Joan Greenwood was the possessor of, perhaps, the most seductive voice in British cinema. Only Fenella Fielding might be able to rival her in that.
As far as the film goes, it has the most elegant and witty script of any British film save, possibly, the Importance of Being Earnest which also featured Joan Greenwood. Dennis Price was sublime in the film, and whilst Alec Guinness gets so many plaudits, it's Price's voice I hear dripping those deliciously poisonous phrases which I hear when this film is discussed.
nb. for British "hot actresses" of the period, may I also suggest Jean Simmons? A little younger I guess, and she was in Great Expectations with Valerie Hobson playing the adult Estella and Jean the younger version. However, in 1949 Jean would have been 20 and photos of her at the time are stunning. She was easily mistaken in some shots for Elizabeth Taylor.

One of my favorite comedies. Charlie Chaplin's serial murder comedy Monsieur Verdoux (made two years earlier) is also superb, and should have been released as an Ealing Studio comedy. It is the same kind of dark, elegant humor and satire.

Dennis Price reminds me of Oscar Wilde.

    • @robkeeleycomposer

Like Wilde, Dennis was both at Oxford and gay, although without much in the way of gaiety, and he drank too much. he was also wonderful as Jeeves to Ian Carmichael's Bertie Wooster on BBC TV in the 1960s.
