  • Imagine as the team travels back to the airport after a game that the team leaves the coach behind, and forgets to bring the coach back with them on the team bus. Well, in week 6 of the 1977 NFL season, that's exactly what happened when somehow, after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals at Riverfront Stadium, Denver Broncos head coach Red Miller was left behind at the stadium, and was forced to hitchhike his way back. This is the story behind that craziness

That was clock management worthy of a Dumb Decisions episode.

Did anyone notice the misnomer on one of the identifiers they called him Robert (Red) Adams?
The ride from Riverfront to CVG is about 15-20 minutes today, in 1977 it was harder to get to the airport as the highway past the airport had yet to be completed. Heck the interstate into Kentucky was still a work in progress... interstate 75 to ky 236 (which was the highway direct to the airport) was a serious drive back then.
Unbelievable story JG9, another great one.

Gotta love a time when the rules the people in charge made actually applied to them as well. Whatever happened to that? Is this what "progress" means?

It's not like Red Miller was as well-known as Shula. Heck, even NBC got his name wrong in the graphic.

This game was called by Dock Enberg and Merlin Olsen. Their first game they called together for NBC.

Pretty much the same thing happened to Troy Aikman after the NFC championship game in San Francisco following the 92 season. Troy was trying to accomodate everyobdy he could with interviews so he was running late. He walks out to see the team busses pulling away without him!! I think John Madden gave him a ride to the airport in the "Madden Cruiser"

Fun fact: as I have already mentioned, Craig Morton, the QB of the Broncos during this game and the 1977 season, was traded by the Dallas Cowboys to the New York Giants for their first-round pick in 1975 and their second-round pick in 1976. While the second-round pick resulted in not much for Dallas, the first-rounder (the #2 pick in the 1975 NFL draft) was none other than Randy White, who would become one of the anchors of Dallas' Doomsday defense and help beat Morton and the Broncos in Super Bowl XII. Morton struggled with the Giants before finding more success in Denver...
Talk about bad luck for Red Miller here...

Sometimes, you just get caught up. I think that's what happened to Miller in this case. Thank goodness for the Bengals fans who helped him out.

  • @arizonawrestlinginterviews1040

    I have questions
    1) Why did no one on the Broncos staff, like an equipment manager, get off the bus to look for Red Miller?
    2) Did the team buses have CB radios? If so, why didn't they communicate with each other or send a staff member from one team bus to the other to deliver the message?
    3) Couldn't Red Miller have used a payphone to call a cab? I'm sure that even back then Cincinnati had phone booths with phone books or cards with taxi numbers.

There was also the fact that Red used to have a quick nap on the bus from the stadium to the airport, huddled into his seat so you couldn't get a clear look at his face. So it might have been difficult to ascertain whether he was on the bus anyway...😉

If those Bengals fans flew out to Denver for the next game Bengals played in Denver…1979, it wasn’t much better. I wonder if offer was valid only while Red was still head coach? According to Football database, Bengals haven’t won in Denver since before Miller started HC of Broncos

Did Cincinnati Stadium have any taxi stands during that time? Also, if he would wind up missing the team flight back to Denver that evening, then why not get a hotel room overnight, and just fly back the next morning?
