Amazing Battle during the Monday Night 8pm EST Event! 333 Kills must be a record but, the Yanks certainly put up a valiant defense. Great leadership on both sides from Officers to NCO's, down to individual soldiers, everyone certainly played their part and did a damn fine job. The intensity of standing in one of these double rank lines and firing back and fourth from 75-150 yards is palpable. I appreciate the 1st TX, 42nd PA, 51st NY & Stonewall Jackson's II Corps (along with many other up and coming companies) attending these Sunday and Monday 4pm EST EU & 8pm EST NA Events.
The Union line seemed to lack order and discipline. With officers ordering moves without interim orders, and giving one order before the other was completed. Examples are giving march orders without arms orders like "shoulder arms" or "right shoulder shift," thus causing many of the men to advance at the port arms, also beginning to issue fire orders while the line was still forming from column, causing men to blob up and take necessary casualties from the rebs.
This is the kind of civil war game I always fantasized about playing way back in the day. Almost exactly like I imagined. The people that made this are my fucking hero's!

Hello, General Cody! Great work with the videos, I've been binge watching all day! Sorry I'm a couple of months late, but you mentioned civilians having picnics and watching battles of the war and that you never understood the concept. I figured I could lend a hand, so here's my two cents on the subject. Most civilians didn't know how brutal war actually was. At First Manassas/Bull Run, most of the volunteers were relatively young, inexperienced, and they had also never seen a picture of a dead soldier. For example, a good portion of the Marines at the battle had been US Marines for eight days. They had no idea what they signed up for. And remember that both sides said that the war would be over in a single battle and that the cowards on the other side would crumble before the day was over. But because the Civil War was the first war in the US to be photographed, the realities suddenly set in for the general public. It's the same reason video decreased public faith during the Vietnam war. So the civilians were there at the beginning of the war, but the practice quickly ended when people realised how truly horrible combat is. I hope this helps. Keep up the awesome posts!
This battle was so epic and entertaining. Charges and counter-charges, an officer carrying out a summary execution, a Zouave losing rifle, Confederates yelling, true drama lol. This battle needs a proper name.
This commander was a royalist? AT THE GUILLOTINE THE TRAITOR! I have some line strategy which was used in Europe from the 16th to the 18th centuries. It's simple and complicate... It's can be very effective against an ennemy charge. You must have a lot of men and 3-4 lines. There is two types : the one shooter line, and the two shooters line. It's simple : At the shoot of the 1st line, the 2nd advance in front of the 1st for shoot, at this moment, the 1st is reloading, the 3rd can advance too for shoot, and the 1st can finish reloading at the moment for advance and shoot for protect the 3rd line reloading... You can use one line in squat, 2nd standing up, and both shoot together, and the 3rd and 4th lines can advance and do the same thing when the firsts are reloading... Sorry for my bad english.
That would be cool to see. Unfortunately I think that fire and advance tactic was considered outdated for the much more powerful and accurate rifles of the 19th century.
They need to use that smoke to maneuver. Since most people in online games make each life a one way ticket to death what they could do is fire a volley or two, get the smoke up from that and fall back to better positions waiting for the enemy. Camouflage could be used a lot better especially in the corn fields. The use of hedge rows and bushes could be done better to camouflage the troops. Also if there are enough trees they could have an entire firing line spread out 2 men per tree at every tree then form back up into a line if needed. Then if they could find defilade that makes them eye level with their cover and target to fire from.
I mean, flanking is hard for these people. There is no strategy to this. It starts will them gathering in front of a much larger mass on a hill. If this is what reenactments are like, it's just silly nonsense.
Carolina boy "Bravo"? Am I thinking that? Are you?... Allons enfants de la patrie! Aux armes citoyens! Entendez-vous dans les campagnes! Mugir ces féroces soldats!
Oh I'm a good ol' rebel, Now that's just what I am, And for this yankee nation, I do not give a damn, I'm glad I fought against her, I only wish we'd won, I ain't asked any pardon, for anything I done .
I may have a different opinion coming from the North, but you are not wrong. Our country is messed up. To me it’s like me either rooting for Hitler or Stalin. Both horrible in their own way.
Watching other people having an awful, violent time appears throughout history. Dan Carlin made the "Painfotainment" episode about violence as public spectacle through history. In certain times, you also want to be the first on the spot to loot the dead soldiers now littering what used to be your crops. Armies camp and move and fight on big, open terrain and someone's rye plot is just a good place to do that. People stripping shoes and weapons and money off dead soldiers is another tradition.
From what I understand, the "picnic" you're referring to during the Civil War, that really only happened one notable time and it was in the very, very beginning, the Battle of Bull Run. What happened was people had showed up less to watch people die, but more that they were like "Oh well this conflict won't last long, we'll watch them steamroll the Confederacy here, we'll be talking negotiations within a few months, then this will just be a flash in the pan and we'll move on" but what happened was the Union got their asses kicked and the people who had showed up to watch ended up scrambling for their own lives but it didn't happen again after that. If they were caught I can only imagine they'd be kept as POWs or ransomed to their families to fund the confederate war effort. They didn't think the Union would ever lose, though, until they did and suddenly they were like "This war might not be short, after all."
Yes they did sit and have picnics to watch the battle near the beginning of the war, people didnt realize how blppdy the affair was really gonna be and they thought it sporty and the like, I remember a book about a family that watched the first Manassas and were scarred and horrified by the battle, they had misconceptions on what total war was gonna look like
Thinking about getting this game and so i'm looking at some YT videos. One thing i was wondering about this one is at the very beginning why did they jump over the wall and then stop 10 feet in front of it to shoot? wouldn't that wall have provided excellent cover from counter attack? The hill does slope down at the point at which they stopped, but it still looks like they would have had LOS against the enemy if they stayed behind the wall and shot at the enemy.
I believe the picnic thing was a lot more prevelant at the start of the war, civilians did not take it all to serious, until it got pretty serious. (But after watching civil war movies, I dont see how piles of corpses in mud with people running over them stabbing eachother is wholesome entertainment)
