Jeep J10 Build, 25 Years Off the Road, with a Bonus 5-speed and Engine Swap!

  • This Jeep J-10 was last on the road in 1996, completely disassembled, and then sat for years. I piece it back together, adding a more modern engine and transmission in the process. I had a Dodge Magnum 5.2/318 with a NV3500, 5.9/360 with a 46RH, or a Ford 4.9/300 with a ZF 5-speed to choose from. Not much of the original Jeep worked, but I take a crack at getting it running and driving anyway!

    I bought a 1964 F100 about three years ago. My cab was on the chassis but everything else was in parts. Last registered in 1992. No motor or transmission. The guy I bought it from was the third guy to realize it was too big a project for them. I hauled it home Father's day 2021. I had a driving chassis by October 2021. My body was a rust belt nightmare. The outer skin was solid but everything else was a disaster. Body supports and floors, gone. Box floor, all box cross member supports and tailgate, gone. No motor, trans or driveshaft. The motor and transmission cross members, gone. No brakes. It did have cool retro Superior aluminum wheels!!😊 Found a 351 M with matching C6. Tore the engine down to make sure it was rebuildable and then bolted engine and trans together to mock up and fabricate cross members and make sure rad support and cab would fit. While the engine was in the machine shop, .030 over and head rebuild, I rebuilt the cab floor and front body supports. So far pretty easy!😊 A friend rebuilt the C6 and after engine reassembly they were mates and a driveshaft made. An aftermarket disc brake conversion had been installed poorly so that took some work. Anyway, I did have a driving chassis by October but it took the winter to complete the the remaining rust rebuilding. The outer shell looks like a "survivor" but the guts are anything but. Nice driver except the 8 mpg😢 I really enjoy watching your videos! Rhanks

    My basic problem is lack of mechanical/ electrical knowledge. Also I don’t understand females, but that’s a different story. My strong points are paint and design. I’m pretty good slinging mud too.
    Put together a Frankenstein something and venture “North to Alaska” and lend a hand. That big old bus would work dandy.
    I’ve got around 50 vehicles from a 1936 Cord, 47 V12 Continental, 59 Cad limo, 40 Packard limo and 11 t-birds and some Vettes and Pontiacs. Take your pick on what comes first!

    I had a 78 J20 I bought from the most insane person I have ever had the misfortune of knowing in Kemmerer Wyoming for $500. Cut to a few years later and I'm driving it to Salt Lake - going through the canyons with no brakes, no exhaust and the thing isn't even licensed. We fixed the brakes (rebuilt the whole system) but then the flywheel had missing teeth and you would frequently have to rock it back and forth to get it to start. Sold it on eBay and had to cut the price in half - as when I went to start it for the guy it was on the broken part of the flywheel. Needless to say - it was a neat truck, very powerful, but I was glad to get rid of it. Sorry to the fella I got rid of it to - as I am sure he found it had many, many other issues lmao!

Really wish to a little wire wheeling, degreasing and a light sprits of black paint. But I guess if you live in the desert it really doesn't matter much. You had perfect access before the body was on.

    I have a 63 Gladiator and it’s a some assembly required type vehicle. Your video gives me hope in resurrecting it with similar engine options (327sbc, 5.7 hemi, and a MCB W126 Diesel). I don’t want to spend any more than I have to to get it on the road. Point being it’s gonna be built on the cheap for maximum fun. You channel is my favorite. Thanks for post this build. Best-

    • @LowBuckGarage
      @LowBuckGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks, I appreciate that! The diesel sounds interesting, is that the OM603? More power than the OM617, so it would be better for the full size truck. Though if you're going for wheelspin, the hemi would be a lot of fun...

    • @oneproudchump8457
      @oneproudchump8457 2 роки тому +2

      @@LowBuckGarage it’s the OM617. Not really looking for a barn burner, but something really cool to drive around on the weekends. I think the OM617 will do the trick. 🤞Anyways, I really like your channel and I wish YT would spotlight more channels like yours. Just dudes talking cars, spinning wrenches and having fun. As for me I’ve had a number of classic cars, that didn’t go very fast. But in my own theory, you don’t have to go fast to have fun! Best to you and your channel. 👍

    • @LowBuckGarage
      @LowBuckGarage  2 роки тому +2

      @@oneproudchump8457 I like your attitude, I completely agree! The OM617 is a great motor, they run forever, but they need to rev pretty high for a diesel. I spent a while with a W123/OM616 (4cyl version of OM617), and I spent a lot of time in the 4K+ RPM range just pushing a mid-size car. FWIW, on a FSJ I'd go with one of your V-8 options. They'll be less work to install (unless you have an oil pan solution already) and probably more fun to drive. But the OM617 in a FSJ would be cool, no doubt about that!

    I know those have low end torque. We had one in a 95 f150. They run forever. I believe it's a Mazda transmission. It got stuck in 5th gear and I was still able to drive home.

    You must have about the best truck in America. It's practically brand new. And not powered by a jeep engine.

    You find some great stuff in New Mexico!!! Nicely done. I had one of these with a 401, blue & white, and stupidly didn't keep it. BTW, really enjoying your channel and your pragmatic approach. Grew up with Willys/Jeeps, still have 3 now and you are giving me inspiration to get these running again. Thank you.

    Is that a windmill made out of a 50 gallon drum on your roof? Would love to know more about whatever it is!!

      Yes it is! I originally built it to power an air pump, but couldn't get the pressure I wanted. I've been toying with hooking up a car alternator to it and seeing what it can do...
