In '69 when Stonewall happened, I didn't hear about it 'cause I was only 11. Within a couple of years I happened to hear talk of a "new" gay rights movement , on late night talk shows (and bam....I Identified). In '75 I came out to family & in '77 attended my first Pride Parade (in Chicago). In '79 (at age 21) I went to Washington D.C. for the first National March for Lesbian And Gay rights. I really enjoy watching the old gays & old Lesbians videos. I know many old gays tend to be invisible in the community, but we're still here. The current generation of LGBTQ+ folks really makes me proud. Carry on my brothers & sisters.

I dont have anything for granted and 90% of the LGB still dont have their rights we are closeted remember that the majority of countries are 3 world countries so if we just see the american perspective then you do have rights but the rest of the world not yet we still live in the 70s

I'm confused... the subtitles said "was homossexuality ILLEGAL?" To which they replied "no", meaning that being gay WASN'T illegal
It had to have been illegal. Watch it again. It was never illegal in the US. I know some people want to look for something new to feel sorry for themselves about, but the question isn't one of them. It wasn't accepted. That is far from any question of legality.
My dad (yes, my father) was an old gay. In a way I hate that he felt that he needed to marry my mother to "pass", but I feel so blessed to have been his daughter. I miss you, Pop.💜

I was in NYC for Judy Garland’s funeral and spent many nights at the bar. I missed the riots by an hour- and regret that I was uptown at the time. I ran down to the Village and experienced the Community at its finest. We had had enough. We must never forget.
I love these guys! They’re so full of life and great advice.
If only my Uncle had made it this far. Brought me to tears that for so long, you had to fight for your life to be who you are, but to see the changes that have been implemented, just swells me with hope, love, and absolute pride.

Stonewall is one of those events that fills my heart with pride, and brings tears to my eyes every time. I’m so great full for those who came before us, who paved the path for us. I’m so proud😭😭💜

I was born on the 25th anniversary! Turning 25 when the Stonewall event turned 50 was pretty special. I tell mom that if she knew what Stonewall was at the time of its 25th year she would’ve known then I’d be queer. 😂

I was born a week after the riots, so my turning 50 on the 50th anniversary generated in me a special pride, a kinship with all who stood up and demanded a little respect.

As a history geek Stonewall is a watershed moment for the modern day LGBTQ movement. I just hope people and the younger LGBTQ generation appreciate Stonewall and celebrate it.

I remember hearing about Stonewall when I was in Junior high. I knew I was different. Everyone said that I was "highly strung" . It was difficult back then. I got over coming out and moved to Los Angeles in 1981. Suddenly, everybody got sick and started dying. I worked st Pacific Bell. I lost so many friends and coworkers . I still cry when I think about it. I am a fractured person.
You may be a fractured person, but one can notice you're also a sensitive, humane guy.

I have such a major appreciation for this and it's the reminder that civil rights isn't just about race or religion, but sexuality too. Just like with Black History Month and the those who fought long and hard for their civil rights, I feel that we need to remember the people who fought for these civil rights during pride month because it is important that we learn to understand, appreciate, and preserve all types of history.

Latvian government just decided to not approve a law (for the 3rd time)that would allow lgbt people to register their partnership without marriage, because it'd be stupid to even mention equal marriage laws here😔🤦🏼♀️. We lost 23 to 60,but we're not giving up and doing the same thing next year, because they'll have to approve it sooner or later.

The bar raids did not totally stop after Stonewall. I witnessed a raid in L.A. in the '80s; the police just tried to make it look like it was not a raid against gays for being gay, but a raid for selling alcohol to underage guys. Also, and I'm sorry to say it, but if you were white you could pretty much slip away from the police unaccosted but if you were black or Hispanic you would be detained, harassed, jailed, etc. The police, even in Los Angeles, were still entrapping gays, raiding and busting bars, etc. for years after Stonewall. The wonderful gents here emphasize the drag queens' involvement in Stonewall, but even the photos suggest it was a rag-tag combination of various marginalized people. Most of us in that era were not fixated on race or skin color; we were just happy to be with other gay people! Stonewall is highly romanticized by the gay community but in my personal opinion we have the hippy movement of the '60s to thank just as much for the beginning of the gay liberation movement.
I was there when they raided Griff's. Luckily. A councilman was there having a drink with his partner. When the officers discovered that there was a city councilman in the crowd. They suddenly became more courteous . The LAPD (Lost Albino Poodle Department) claimed that underage kids had been served alcohol. Nearly everybody in the crowd was larger and bigger than the three officers. It almost became a situation.....
@@ivorwm2291 Yes, I seem to remember that one too. Was that the one when the bar was doing this sort of "mock auction" of sex slaves? If so, I remember seeing the announcement of that event and thinking, "Well, that's pushing the envelope a bit. They're gonna attract Laura Law with that kind of kinky party." The bust I witnessed was at Tabascos on a rock music night called Club Fuck. There were quite a few girls there; it was a mixed crowd, but lots of Hispanics, as the bar's usual patrons were mostly Hispanic. (Ironically, same general location as the Black Cat,) All of a sudden they turned the lights on and I saw several police enter; there were helicopters hovering over the bar with their spotlights. It was so ridiculously dramatic and overblown you would've thought they were busting terrorists instead of a bar with a bunch of young gays and gay-friendly people dancing to Depeche Mode and New Order. The gals got out fine, I thought I would get arrested if they noticed how buzzed I was but I had my "white card". I saw a whole line-up of Latino guys being harassed by the cops;; profiling was common and blatant back then. I later read the supposed rationale for the bust was that the bar was serving underage patrons.( I guess somebody missed their payment to the cops?) Meanwhile, there were probably a half dozen straight bars doing the same thing within 3 miles of Tabascos. When I see cops smiling and waving to the crowds at Gay Pride events I remember what they were once like, entrapping gay men in rest rooms, the park, and porn theaters, harassing black and Hispanic gay men while leaving white gay men alone, etc. These arrests led to job losses, loss of careers, and suicides. Those police departments were a reflection of their conservative, homophobic police chiefs. I love the way young people romanticize the '80s, but honey, Reagan was in office (hello?), there were still these bar busts, and the A- Monster was killing people. The '80s were a nightmare compared to the '70s. Things did not really get considerably better for gays until the success of protease inhibitors in the late '90s and the imminent rise of the internet.
@Ed Miller Oh, I am quite aware white men were arrested as well. I myself was taken into custody in L.A. once when I was a young guy new to the city. In this case, it was a black vice cop who asked me the following question: "Would you like to go down with me to my place?" The police report said that I agreed to "down on him at his place". I told my public defender neither my BF nor I use the sexual term "go down on me". He said "So what do you call it ?" I shrugged and said "We call it a blow job." My sentence consisted of a set of rules obviously intended for young men hustling, which I've never done in my life. My post only refers to my own experiences in L.A. in which I consistently noticed that men of color got the brunt of the busts and harassment I personally witnessed.
You mentioned that most were just happy to be with other gays despite race. I heard different things such as gay black men not achieving prices at balls so they created ballroom culture from which many of our gay culture is influenced by today. Would you say despite that there were still bars out there where gay people of all colors gathered together?
@Ed Miller I didn't mean to imply no white men were arrested. I know my gay history, sir. I myself had an unfortunate brush with Laura Law in the '70s when I was entrapped by a conniving vice officer. He brusquely asked me, "Hey, y'wanna go down with me to my place?" He was most attractive so I said "sure". I was then charged with "lewd and lascivious behavior" (Hello? I hadn't even gotten around to being 'lascivious' yet!). This word-twisting officer with the pathetic occupation told the court he asked me if I wanted to go down on him at his place. I told my public defender,"Umm, no... he asked if I wanted to go down WITH him to his place., not go down ON him at his place. I have had a BF for 5 years and we never use that term "go down". He can tell you that." "What term do you use?" the attorney asked. I replied, "blow job". The attorney laughed and the bizarre punishment for my "crime" was a list of legal prohibitions routinely given to street hustlers, an activity I never engaged in. So you see? Been there and done that.

I found out about stonewall last year when I attended the pride parade in NYC. It was the 50th anniversary of stonewall. It was my second time going. The parade was the biggest ever it was beautiful. Proud to be bisexual and apart of this community.

I wish more people knew about the Compton Cafe Riot in San Francisco that happened before Stonewall. And again it was the Trans community that rose up there. The very people that to this day 'masc' gay men call 'sissies'. It was us sissies that first stood up and demanded to be treated as human beings and yet somehow we're still the last ones to be accepted

Stonewall was the beginning of gays finding their political legs or bearings. They realized they had political clout, if they could get organized.
Either with a gun or by political effort, things change. Both require a fight though.
Calling Stonewall a riot rather than a 'disturbance' or a 'incident' or 'raid' really lit the fuse for the gay movent in NYC. Along with other factors, including the black protests for their civil rights!
The 1960's was a very turbulent time--- protests for freedoms, the start of popular drug culture, the hippie era, and a real backlash against the war in Vietnam. Over 50,000 American military kids/people were killed there. For the first time, it was broadcast into everyone's home on a nightly basis with the network news! Blood, guts, dismembered bodies, death--- war isn't glorious but ugly, senseless and irrational. Exciting times. Turbulent times. You never knew what would happen that day when you got up in the morning. What new, major event was about to happen!!?? Plus there were the killings of MLK, JFK, RFK, and 4 college students at Kent State by our own national guard soldiers, Nixon got bounced from office, etc, etc! A very, very wild time. It seemed as if the world was going to fly apart into little pieces at any second.
But Stonewall was the start of the gay movement. If drag queens could put the police on the defensive, that was a major signal for others to standup for themselves, too! As the saying goes: No one is free unless everyone is free! And rightly so!!!

I was 10 years old at the time, I didn't hear anything about Stonewall, until I was a teenager.
My girlfriend knows that i am bi or what ever they called me. She still loves me. But i don't want to ruin her life. But she still there for me.
I credit the Stonewall uprising for the quality of life that I enjoy today.
