I am confused. You said freezing blueberries would cause a small slit in then then you said the frozen bagged blueberries would need to be put in the processor. Why don't the bagged frozen blueberries work the same as the fresh frozen blueberries? I love freeze dried blueberries.
Probably because commercially frozen is frozen very quickly, which causes less damage than the way we freeze at home
@@Yoda63 It looked like these were high bush blueberries, The Wild Low bush blueberries are put through a process called IQF Independently Quick Frozen. The is a little miss leading. The wild blueberry actually goes through quite a process ending in a berry that is rather broken up but still whole. From shakers and blowers to clean chaff to water baths in a turbulent process to a roller cage to break up clusters and two deep freezing stages and this isn't including the mechanical harvesting techniques use by modern growers. The wild blue berry purchased in the grocery store should easily freeze dry with little problem. I grow fresh packed wild blueberries with are still hand harvested and I need to bust them up after freezing to get a decent product from the freeze dryer. One of my also favorite ways is to blend them into a slurry and spread on trays and cut with a pizza cutter after done, like little crackers or bluetons of salad topping.
Easy way to pierce blueberries in a container is with a big serving fork. Just poke onto fork a few pike and push berries off fork onto tray.
HI, I just bought a Harvest right and i was drying Raspberry's and Blackberry's. I checked the
Raspberry's and they were done so I assumed the Blackberry's were done as well, they weren't. I hit no defrost before I checked the Blackberry's..Do I have to go through a whole cycle again or is there a way to add time to it? Thanks!
Yes, you have to start the cycle again, but it will be much shorter with the second run.
I actually started a new cycle and then canceled it. It then gave me the option to add time! Who Knew! Thanks for getting back to me... @@Jcsiremodeling
If the blueberries come frozen from store, why do they need to be thawed and refrozen?
You need them to crack open and the frozen blueberries from the store do not have cracks in them
My blueberries were high in sugar and bubbled “syrup” out and stayed sticky for two complete runs.
Yep, that can happen.
That happens from time to time
Mine did too. So what is the solution to fix the ones in the Fd and how do you prevent it in the future. What temp do you dry at?
Standard temperature.
I’m not aware of any “fixes”. I just won’t FD any more of the sweet berries my parents grow.
I have them in “temporary” storage. They are more like just plain dried fruit.
Wow I have the first generation harvest right and it took me 56 hours last time for blueberries
What if you don't want your blueberries chopped up? Gray muffins taste okay but don't look very appetizing. You could also use a pizza crust docking tool or pastry docking tool or a clean new pet brush with a built in hair remover way cheaper than the specialty tool you are talking about to poke the berries. Will the mostly intact blueberries rehydrate easily or will you end up with blueberries that are more like dehydrated ones. My crew doesn't like blueberry raisins. If you only want blueberries for compote or toppings your method would be one I would consider using, but most of our berries are eaten on cereal. I can't see my hubs volunteering for squashed berries on his morning cereal.
Hi Brian . I have a tough question that no one knows the answer to, but I know you will :)
Can ALREADY freeze dried foods be ‘frozen’ or does it get ‘frozen’ in freezing temperatures?
We live in a cold climate ranging from -20 to -30 in the winter and + 25 on average for our 2-3 months of summer. We want to put our freeze dried goods in a seacan storage container-( which is pitch black , no light going through at all). The food is put into Mylar bags with O2’s sealed then into totes sealed with lids.
Not sure if freeze dried foods get frozen and thawed like normal food? 🤔
Thank you for getting me hooked onto freeze drying, all your videos are the best.
I'm not an expert, but I believe the freezing process freezes the water content of the food. Since the FD removes all the moisture I don't see how it could freeze. But I could be wrong. ❤️🌹❤️
Thanks for all the helpful videos you do. As a FD newbie, I really appreciate it. We do not have a lot of counter space but are thinking about a chamber vacuum sealer for our freeze dried foods in mylar bags. Which model would you suggest for doing up to 1 gallon mylar bags (7mil each side)? Also, do you think a chamber vacuum sealer is necessary to achieve long term storage for foods like ground beef, whole milk, etc? Or will the impulse sealer with an oxygen absorber do the job long term?
Can I use nitrogen flush sealing machine for packing fruit instead of Oxygen absorbed bag?
Hey Brian, have you ever tried freeze-drying honey or maple syrup? Is it possible, I can't find much information about it. Thanks!
Honey and syrup have a shelf life beyond a human. There is no need to freeze dry them. If you do, however try to freeze dry them they will blow up in the freeze dryer and make a huge mess.
@@live.life.simple.Thanks for replying. I'm aware of the shelf life, the thing is I am trying to create a product that is completely powdered and i need a sweetener. Powdered dates are then the only suitable sweetener I guess?
@@SlavicAffairs bananas also work for a sweetener
Thank you so very much for this video. I grow blueberries, but haven’t freeze dried them because of the hassle of nicking the berries. I will give them a try now.
What temp do you set the shelves for?
Thank you...thank you....thank you so very much...I like easy
300th like! thanks. I bet that's how they make boo berry crunch!
I've got a freezer full of wild blueberries am picking up my freeze dryer today. The wild berries are much smaller than these on the video. Can I just stick them straight in the freeze dryer? If I put them in a food processor they will become berry juice.
Here’s a better idea what about doing a purée? Put the flat
Puree will work as well but would not work for a bite sized snack
I've never had to poke holes or cut my blueberries in order to freeze dry them. They always freeze dry, just fine.. What am I missing? 🤔
I would like to know if you have experience with freeze dryer food freezing after the process. We have a cabin and we shut down it down in the winter when we are not there. It freezes in the cabin. When we return the cabin is heated up again. Is the freeze dryed food affected by the cabin freezing then thawing and heating up again.
There is no moisture in freeze dried food, so ideally there is nothing to freeze. It is recommended that it's not in extreme hot or cold but I am not sure why? One thing you may want to consider are rodents if your cabin is shut down.
Do you think the pro machine that much quicker than the old? Probably needs more experimenting.
I bought the small dryer July 2023, thy had just came out with the four tray model. Fast forward, a week ago I finely did the bread run. When I loaded it, it asked if it was pre-frozen. Reading to run it now with frozen apples, this time it didn’t ask. Is it supposed too? Should I change any settings before I run it. I’m confused.
On older software it asked if the food was prefrozen
@@live.life.simple. so it sounds like you are saying I don’t need to worry about that and no need to make adjustments. Mine is the small 4 tray v5.4. Thank you for responding back. I am very appreciative for the time you take to make these videos. 😊
@@LouiseLLee it's strange that it would ask the first time and not the second.
Did you ever find a kill-a-watt meter that would work for the large FD?
I use the emporia energy monitor. Need to have your dryer on it own dedicated circuit for best results. If other appliances are on it, either don't have them running while you are drying or, take a base line reading before starting your machine and then you can factor out how much the difference is after the run. I can make a video on it and post to UA-cam if you want. Works great for us!
When the blueberries are dry, or crisp, but sticky, will they store for a long time in Mylar bags, or will the fact that they are sticky shorten the storage life? And, are they really dried if they ARE sticky?
Are you sure about your directions on whole blueberries, whether pre freezing or using the FD to freeze them is the same. So when would you need to cut them in half or use a berry roller then?
You said you were gonna compare the time that it takes in the new pro model but you mentioned 0 about that.
How much faster was the pro model with different internal components?
Why is 90% of the freeze drying community telling me to never freeze dry store bought pre frozen fruits? Seems logical 2 do, they say only do fresh fruits. Do u have an opinion on this?
Why can't you freeze dry store bought?
@@live.life.simple. they r saying it will wreck my freeze dryer, they say never freeze dry frozen store bought, only fresh fruits. But I don't really see the issue, some were saying they r sprayed with stuff etc etc
@@TheRealBatCave I've never heard that. If there was that bad of stuff sprayed on it, I'm not sure I would eat it either 🤣. I could be wrong, but I don't see how it's any different
@@live.life.simple. yea me neither, I'm surprised u haven't heard people saying not 2 so this, just look up freeze drying frozen fruit it's odd, anyway I ordered the tray stackers from ur website the other day looking forward to getting them get some 7 tray batches done up
Check your blueberries. To do this dunk your berries in boiling water, immediately take out and dip into ice water. This doesn't change texture of berries because you're not cooking them. This proccess puts microscopic crackes in the skins the mousture can escape from. Same with grapes
cool trick!
Are these fresh?
Even for the short time they’re in boiling water, I’d imagine they lose some nutrition..
@@fei-forestry6169 yes! My daughter pricks her blueberries with a needle before freeze drying. The checked berries rehydrate into a much better product and closer to the original. My daughter has had to throw hers out because they couldn't completely dry with just a pin prick. She now cuts them in 1/2, but this is very time intensive. She will no longer FD blueberries
@@gabepadgett4411 not as much as if they don't dry completely and you have to throw them out
Where can I get the 4 tray for small....couldn't find on web site?😢
That is the pro model. I believe they only sell pro models now. Maybe their pictures are not yet updated
I was going to do the mixed berries. Not a good idea?
How much weight loss is there when freeze drying
the weight removed is the water weight in the food
Yum!
What is that machine u are using your seal your Mylar bag?

How long does it take to freeze dry those 4 trays of blueberries that are cracked open?
This cycle took 33 hours
In my medium, it takes 22 hours with one quart of frozen solid, I pulse about 8 times before I freeze dry in the food processor 😊.
Where do you get the tray spacers?
