When I was a teenager me and my best friend Bill each has a cob pipe. We got some cherry flavored tobacco from the drug store and ran off to the woods, sat with our backs against trees and smoked our cob pipes. We just sat and blew smoke and didn’t even talk. That was my best memory from that era. Cob pipes are great.

One of the reasons life seams to move faster when your older is, when you are 10 years old you only have that many years to compare life to. If you live to be 80 then you have eight Times that to compare life to. I sometimes tell my family that life is like the snowball rolling down hill.

Right. I think two when you're younger there is a lot of new things to do learn and discover. As you get older things start to become repetitive. Its good to change things up if you can to not have days and years running into each other as much.

You puff on that cob religiously, dedicate it to a favorite blend and it will deliver you Nirvana. I’ve collected Briar pipes for years and most are just average smokers, a few are exceptional but on average cobs seem to provide the better smoke.

Watching this while smoking my expensive cumbersome claw meer pipe while my favorite pipe (an old all around plateau briar freehand pipe my dad gave to me) sits in the pipe rack. Hmmmmm...the meer gets prettier as I smoke though. Anyhooo. I will say this the first few smokes out of that cob will be horrible, then be ok but have an aftertaste of corn. THEN it will smoke nicely. And maybe that's a life lesson too. If you are patient and deal with are the crud now, it will turn out nicely in the end...or you still might hate the pipe and all that hard work was for nothing. Man I suck at this life lesson stuff. 🤣

I actually prefer the taste of tobacco out of a corncob rather than a briar pipe. I rarely smoke briar these days. To my taste buds, the briar kind of subdues the flavor of tobacco with the corncob doing the opposite. I have had briar and meerschaum pipe smoke like crap. IMHO, it comes down to the draw. If the draw is too tight, now matter how nice the wood or meerschaum is, it's not going to smoke good.

    • @williamfrost4055
      @williamfrost4055 2 роки тому +6

I'm definitely a fan of meerschaum pipes but in traditional shapes. briar not so much. Already have more pipes than I can figure out what for. But like 90/95% of the time I find myself smoking the same meerschaum pipe I can smoke 2 maybe 3 bowls out of it in a day on consecutive days and not have problems with moisture. You have me thinking I should try a corncob though.
If you want an easier draw you can pretty easy drill out the draft hole a little bigger even with a hand drill the existing draft whole works as a pilot just run a slightly bigger drill bit through it will follow the existing draft hole.

Comparing a briar pipe to a corn cob is not really a fair or reasonable comparison. It certainly isn't what what people mean when they ask; Is an expensive pipe better than a cheap pipe(?). For that comparison, people want to know; Is a $1800 Dunhill pipe really better than (say) a $90 Savinelli ?
Briar & Corn Cob pipes are completely different materials & have different purposes. - I have 30 or so "nice" briar pipes that I reach for regularly. (From $75-$300). I also have a few corn cobs. The beauty of corn cob pipes is that they don't hold on to the flavour of the previously smoked tobacco. So corn cobs are fantastic for testing new blends, trying out new tobaccos that you don't want to effect (or be effected by) a pipe that you have designated for a particular tobacco type. (Some people don't care, but I never smoke a VarPer in a Latakia pipe, never an aromatic in Vaper or Latakia pipes etc..). They are also great for working out in the yard. If they fall out of your pocket you don't care as much (I've lost 2 nice pipes in the back 20 acres. Bummer!)
So, between briar and corn cob; Which is BETTER? - It all comes down to the needs of the moment.

I have a few “high end” pipes and a few cobs. My cobs run from a 7 dollar MM Legend to a 2024 MM Honeypot. So, all in all my pipes range from $7-$300. I’ll be brutally honest, may favorite smoke is my $7 corncob. I didn’t want to admit this to myself but hey it’s the truth! Every pipe smoker needs to have at least one of each though a briar and a cob. Two COMPLETELY different experiences!

Before the grabow i using some cheap headshop pipe made intaly, I've noticed a huge difference in how the grabow smokes. The grabow is a billard versus the other other being bent and a little bigger. The stem fits tighter on the grabow allowing for a tighter and smoother drag.

You got me. Your videos are like a box of chocolate. I happen to love my country gentlemen corn cob pipe (that’s the cob I love holding) but clearly that’s not the most important thing. Mostly, the tobacco I put in it could be more important, or not. I do plenty of things that I enjoy, but do I? I have lots of hobbies and I enjoy lots of things. Do I feel like I’ve done something? Most of the time, no.
And you are renovating an old tobacco farm.
I hope to end up in Idaho someday enjoying more nature. Fortunately, my wife shares that idea. Looks like I’m gonna be enjoying all the cigars and pipes while I’m there as well which makes me happy to think about.
    Edit and addition:
Thank God I do what I love, construction. I love being out there and doing it every day. Couple years ago I started doing it for myself. Thank God I have clients. They keep calling, I keep working. I feel like I’m being taken care of while I take care of myself and my family.

This strongly suggests that you had your mind made up way before you made this vid. Missouri Meerschaum puts out 80,000 pipes a year, which sounds like a lot more than any other pipe company can claim. Price has some bearing on the volume of purchases, but not completely. Mark Twain smoked various types of pipes, many of which were cobs. I have something like fifty pipes in my stable, ten of which are cobs. A corncob pipe is invariably among my equipment when I go fishing or camping--it seems to go better with the activity, the natural smells, and the sights around me. These pipes don't feel out of balance--and considerably less so than certain briar and meerschaum "artistic" pipes. If you've ever smoked a churchwarden pipe, you would probably call it "out of balance," but I am fond of them, especially when I want some quiet reflection. Missouri Meerschaum even puts out a corncob churchwarden called the "wizard." I would suggest that you give that cob a try, sitting in a comfy chair, perhaps by a fireside with a good book in your lap, a beverage of choice at your elbow, your dog lying by your side, and the cat doing whatever it wants to do.

I can say personally for me I go with the masouri marchane corn cob pipe. The cheap ones that run about $10.00 . Reason being My pipes are a tool that I’m hard on all day every day like my work boots and blue jeans. I started smoking pipe as a alternative to rolling my own cigarettes. Which I started doing to save money when I started my farm. I’m tough on pipes I clean the bowl with pocket knife. I clean the stem with a long nail. And the mouth peice with wire. I bang them out on my hands or pants or whatever is around. I constantly have it in my mouth smoking cigarette tobacco that’s classed as menthol pipe tobacco for tax reasons. And the corn cob pipe holds up just as good as any expensive one for me. I’ll swear by them.

So if you compare a handmade expensive briar pipe with a cob (not a bing'a favorite Savinnelli, have One, enjoy It a lot, but it's an entry level), a real expensive well mare briar pipe, it's like comparing two different worlds. They are both pipe, but they are made for different way of enjoying the hobby.

I, personally, do not like either a corncob pipe or a Meerschaum pipe. The corncob makes the tobacco taste burnt, and the Meerschaum, chalky. A briar is what I like, and a large bowl, like the Peterson 03 is the best I have every smoked. I am sure for others the corncob is their best, it is all what we as individuals like. As stated, the tobacco is the star of the show. A cool, slow burn is what makes my smoke the best... Happy piping, ALL.

Try as I might I cannot stand corn cob pipes. They feel flimsy and get hot as hell. I have a Molina straight billiard briar with a large bowl that is a gorgeous smoke and recently got a Peterson for pennies when I bought a mixed box of curios from ebay and I'm completely sold! I love the Peterson system so much that I have just bought another. I love my lakeland flakes and the Peterson brings out all of the nuances. It's also the only pipe I have that smokes all the way down the bowl on the first light after charring.

Gotta break those cobs in. First 6 smokes at least are burning the cob itself. They smoke great after you build a little cake, like most pipes do. Briars are wonderful too of course but a cob is good if you are out doing things and don't care if you lose it.

  • @HookahBurdar
    @HookahBurdar Рік тому

Well, many of us do hapen to think about what matters most in our lifes and about how we spend time. Now, as for your comparison between pipes I would make a few considerations: First of all, you are comparing a corncob pipe to a briar pipe, which seems odd to me. The sameas if you compared a briar pipe with a Meershaum one, or a pipe made of a different wood, like cheery wood or olive wood. You might choose to compare smoking pipes made of different woods and materials but that's is different than to compare cheap to expensive ones. Now, a 150 Dollars pipe is almost a ¡n entry level briar pipe in my book. I live in Spain, and a decent smoking pipe made by a local brand might be under 100 €, a really cheap one might even cost around 30 €, but an entry level Peterson, for example would already be over 100 €, and such a Peterson pipe (besides bying also made in Spain, except for the stem and finishing touches (Like colouring it) will also be made in Spain...). Quality of a pipe, IMHO, has to do with how well the tov¡bacco burns inside it, how the smoke tastes, wether it becomes too hot or not so much, how well the stem is made and how much it would last, wether the pipe is confortable to hold, wether the stem is confortable and may be a couple of characteristics on top of those. And in my exprereience a pipe of around, say 300 € is usually better than one priced 100 € or less. Beyond that (and my most expensive pipe costed around 2000 €) there is no noticeable difference, except for the brand name or the fame of the craftsman (u¡nlees some precious stones or materials were added). Some crafftsmen, that is pipemakers, would use better briar than others, some would let it dry for ten or more years while bigger worshops or factories would let it dry for a couple of months. That makes a difference in the performance of the resulting pipes. The stem might be cheap plastic, better quality metacrylate or ebonite, and ebonite might be of different qualities. Some pipesmokers prefer ebonite stems, which are a bit softer, even if they require care and might add a bad flavour when they oxidise... Sme others only like good acryliv¡c mouthpieces... The fact of a pipe easylybecoming very hot, despite being smoked pateintly, might also be an issue... So, IMHO all briar pipes are not made equal, and 150 Dollars pipe are indeed better (withbetter briar and better material for the stem) than those costing 30 dollars, and those over 250 or 300, usually, not always, better than those costing 100-150 dollars. Also, pipes made by good craftsmen, by renowned pipemakers, are usually much better than pipes from the mainstream lines of bigger brands ( such as Peterson, Savinelli or Stanwell).

This is a SEINFELD video. Remember, Seinfeld was a “show about nothing,” which this presentation seems to mirror. Balance? What’s that got to do with how the pipe smokes? I bought my first pipe in 1963. The quality and construction of the material is foremost to me. A good pipe doesn’t INTERFERE with the tobacco, in that it allows the TOBACCO to burn-not the pipe.
And that begins with the break-in period. A cheaper, well broken-in pipe will smoke better than an expensive pipe which was NOT well prepared, i.e. one that hasn’t had a proper ‘cake’ built up in the bowl.
Nothing was ever developed about the quality of cheap vs. expensive pipes. The title is therefore misleading.

I'm 18 and I feel so lucky, yet proud, that I am asking such philosophical questions now rather than later. Most of the people I know just live their life. Me? I actually have a problem of thinking too much about what matters most and how I want to live, that I don't get around to actually living it. I am determined to make it work, however, and I hope I will build a meaningful life from now - a young age.

Good luck my man. I thought the same when I was 18, yet life rushed past my eyes and now I am 32. It's really easy to get lost in the experiences in life, because what matters most to you isn't readily gratifying, and all the other unimportant stuff hit you with dopamine all the time. Don't let that take you away!
      Wish you a bright life!

Regardless if you're starting out I'd go for the Cob pipe. Cheap smokes good doesn't ghost if you try different tobaccos. Nothing beats a bit of Huckleberry Fin moments. If you enjoy smoking a pipe then move onto a briar pipe.
Oh I have big hands so any pipe sits in my hand fine if alittle small 😂.

I have several briarwood pipes of the basket variety some are estate pipes I have restored. Have a couple of Turkish meerschaum pipes and a corn cob. I would not necessarily say one is better than the other. Just some are better for smoking certain tobaccos. It's mostly personal preference.

Stop joking around - get a pipe at least $200 or more. It should have much better briar, and you will taste the tobacco instead of the wood pipe. And with cheaper pipes - Peterson comes to mind - you taste the wood more than the tobacco. Like plywood!

my experience: corn cobs are a great value but tough to break in- the first 5 or so bowls are tough, not pleasant. After that, they work great. But, the bottom plug burns through relatively quickly compared to briar. and you have to start all over again.

I absolutely hated this video but certainly not your channel in general. I can’t relate to your experience in the slightest. Regardless of your path in life you should aim to live to your desires as best as you can, and you should remember that dynamism and mindfulness in your life is key to making the best of a life that can end at any moment. Doing so would also let you feel the full length of a year as it passes. Don’t let your life live you or you will (I apologize for bluntness) die miserably. Not living the life you want to live and getting lost in the motions of everyday ‘survival’ is a very common and tragic dialogue of regret experienced by people in their deathbed. On the bright side it’s never too late turn all this around and begin living truly well.

My briar is expensive. Cobs are cheep. The difference is I can smoke one cob all day and if I lose or break it, no big deal. My briars need to rest after each smoke. You need more than one pipe anyway. When all the briars are tired the cob is always ready.

I’m at the point where I no longer need to make sense of them. (“Hey you kids, get off my lawn!”) Not.

I don't want to buy a pipe on line. I want to hold it in my hand. If it just feels cheap I don't want it. I want to know the bowl size. I can't tell that on the internet. I want to know if a pipe cleaner will pass easily through the mouth piece all the way to the bowl. I can't do that on the internet. I want to know if the mouthpiece is quality. I can't do that on the internet. I like a relatively wide mouthpiece. I would like to hold it in my mouth before I buy it. I can't do that on the internet.
And I can't find a real tobacco shop anywhere, where I live.

    I have 5 MM pipes… 4 cobs and 1 hardwood ( maple)
I have 5 briar pipes.. a Savinelli 614(Bent Billiard) Peterson Spigot, 2 “ Estate “ pipes ( they belonged to my great uncle.. a Dr Grabow and a Basket briar), and a HIS Churchwarden.
Eventually I would like to get a clay and a meerschaum pipe.
I think it’s a matter of quality of the pipe and style. I’m not a big fan of a large heavy bowl .. I want to be able to clench it if need be without it being too uncomfortable. I’m content with the pipes I currently own, but I would like to have a an eclectic collection
