It's sad that the motors are so expensive. Okay, so they're relatively high voltage, but brushless motors aren't exactly a new or expensive technology. You should send Clive one to dig into for fun, if you haven't already.
Chris, I've seen situations where the manufacturer of equipment will have motors or parts made to their spec so that one needs to get the parts from them. This only makes service calls more expensive for parts, and can delay repairs since they usually have to order the parts rather than being able to stop at an HVAC supplier and get it off the shelf.
2:39 I got a couple of those for the garden hoses at home. Wife loves them, worth every dollar. Tough as nails and good options for everything from defrosting the deep freeze in the shed to washing the dirt bikes on "flat" mode.
For being so expensive, they should at least be IP67 classified, so you can rinse these motors of without any problems. I don't get it why manufacturers don't know that a freezer can freeze up and needs to be rinsed with hot water to get it back working in a reasonable time - it is to be expected so they should put proper motors in.
I very much appreciate all the info you provided in your video’s. I enjoy watching and learning how you approach each call, even if you think your cheating a little bit with some of the diagnosis. It allows us to to see and decide how we can approach the same situation. Keep up the great video sir
Lol we had “”3!”” Customers like that ! An we finally gave up an just decided hay!! It’s their money their poring down the drain and in to our pockets. YESsss it is extremely frustrating to the Teck on ridiculous preventable returns, but? You can drag a camel to the water hole, but you cannot force him to drink.. So I “FULLY” understand your frustrations, but ultimately it’s a customers call they own the equipment an can do however they want 🤦♂️ all we can do is try
So put in 1000 watts of defrost heaters and set it to run the first 5 or 10 minutes of every hour. Do any of these use a hot gas valve for defrost, like on ice machines?
I would tell these people that constantly leave the door open that your next service call will cost you twice as much. If they wanna get a discount, they must abide by keeping the door closed. I would not put up with some of the people.
The temperature in the cold room is very low and so that causes ice build up on the coils, yet some refrigeration systems use a defrost clock to tell when it’s time to heat up the ice to melt it off. it is very difficult to set.
I just had two evap fans and defrost timer go bad but my sight glass was good and it sounded good never did put gauges on and they still running cold job was three days ago
I work in the radio broadcast industry and I have had clients who would pay me to drive to a transmitter site to flip a switch once a month rather than fork out for a replacement controller. It's crazy and makes no financial sense but there it is.
The amount of cooks and managers that think they can be technicians is comical. Some are decent due to past mechanical experience but the vast majority barely know anything.
Do you dry off the ceiling of the box before you leave? Water has infiltrated the motor and causing it to sense a false voltage on the red leg. You have to be really careful while defrosting the evap.
@@silasmarner7586 The pallet size doors were open all day , We installed curtains ; The heat from a hot gas defrost system is short , We had to set several defrosts per day to prevent evaporator from frosting over , This was affecting the box temp. some times in hot summer months , Larger equipment would have solved this , But money is always the issue .
I would love to know all he knows!! an I been doing this since 1976 an learn something new everyday!! An that’s why I love this work!!❤ but he was learning as a child helping his dad so his knowledge could fill an encyclopedia!!!😊 an if I wasn’t a dinosaur? I would walk across the United States to work for him. He is never cocky he is just so knowledgeable an a man/woman could learn a lifetime of knowledge in a year from him…
@@Damicske No, actually I named her Freda Payne. She is quite old and her condensing unit failed a couple of years ago. Thanks to inspiration from Chris, I took her apart and changed her capacitor, which fixed the problem!
First as a disclaimer, I will say that without the customer we wouldn’t have jobs. Now with that being said, sometimes the customers are absolute idiots. We can explain to them certain important things like “it’s important to not leave the freezer door open so this won’t happen again” or from my experience, “keep your filter regularly changed and don’t run the Tstat at 60 degrees in the middle of the night in November so this doesn’t happen again” and they still don’t get it. And they do it again and wonder why they keep having the same issue. 😂
I know I'm a harsh critic of some of these restaurants, but I will try.. try.. to be more loving in this comment - first of all the wiring upstairs we VERY clean and elegant. But shouldn't the manager be punished corporally for their negligence? Either terminate the manager, or make sure they train, warn, and then terminate the employee if the employees are guilty (a 50 buck camera pointed at the handle will insure the perp is caught), or at LEAST rap their knuckles with a steel ruler? Am I wrong here? Please tell me I'm wrong!
There are customers you could drop and surely pick up ones that are reasonable or you aren't charging enough. Must be lucky here since we are swamped always.
Everyone acts like its the managers fault. Its not the managers fault, it is the employees and their work ethic. I have been onsite when managers try to correct a behavior and an employee says F this and quits leaving the store short handed and shifts unfilled. The managers have to walk on egg shells for fear of losing employees even shit ones. Until the work ethic improves it will be an issue. Employees don’t care about the equipment or doing things right because they aren’t invested in it. They figure it ain’t mine who cares.
Can I buy that used motor from you? I need something like that for a project and new motors are expensive :D maybe add a extra heater on the top in front of coil.
Is that those new 2 speed motors? That are extremely expensive? Nvm i guess i should watch the whole video first. Yea nothing like a 1000 dollars motor. They are stupid expensive.
Is ECM an acronym for extra cost motor

Electronically Commutated Motor.

I suggest retrofitting with KE2 defrost controller, door switch auxiliary and KE2 Smart Access.

Be thankful that they use a hammer to defrost, last week I got the privilege of paying for the repair of a coil defrosted with a screwdriver.
I've seen that so Many times... But only once on a CO2 system xD

Sadly these are built down to a price, rather than up to a specification.

How about a hanging clear vinyl curtain in the door way?
Today I learned you learned your trade from your dad and now a lot of how good you are makes sense
I've found using a flat head screwdriver to hold the bracket in place while you get the fan guard on makes it super easy.
Would those plastic air strip thingies help this location?

I have worked in hospitals and they put their frozen food in the cooler before cooking the next day
So put in 1000 watts of defrost heaters and set it to run the first 5 or 10 minutes of every hour.
Do any of these use a hot gas valve for defrost, like on ice machines?
A simple ke2 with defrost can work good to stop frost buildup
Wow, those motors have a damn good seal.
I use a steamer to defrost Ice all the time.great around wiring to use and motors.
9:10 Should these motors have a sight glass to see whether they are dry on the inside or wet or burnt?
Good vid my Bud ... Thx as always ...
Are the hammer marks rounded, if so are they using a ball-pein hammer on it?
Amazing 👏 craftsmanship Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏 respect 🙏
Hot gas defrost with air switches. The customer probably turns the breaker off to "defrost " it.
I know of an organisation that does that to several Scope fridges. They're programmed for several defrosts daily.
Thanks!
I’ve removed the termination on the defrost clock before in high traffic walk in freezers. Just let it go the full 30-45 mins
Drip cycle, fan term, superheat! With this ice pattern, did you look at these? I suspect water is blowing off that coil on startup after defrost.
I would tell these people that constantly leave the door open that your next service call will cost you twice as much. If they wanna get a discount, they must abide by keeping the door closed. I would not put up with some of the people.
Or quote them to install a door switch to cut refrigeration when the door is open.
Why lose a customer? They are going to pay someone. As long as he is giving them the options and they decide to keep paying for service calls.
Walk in freezers sure are a pain especially if they’re iced up
The temperature in the cold room is very low and so that causes ice build up on the coils, yet some refrigeration systems use a defrost clock to tell when it’s time to heat up the ice to melt it off. it is very difficult to set.
They should use more accurate ice sensors
I just had two evap fans and defrost timer go bad but my sight glass was good and it sounded good never did put gauges on and they still running cold job was three days ago
When you got there that timer had 8 defrost😮
Nah, I see this everyday, my customers always tell me that the coil just iced up yesterday.
Do you know where to find the brand of a walk-in cooler? I'm trying to look for it in my mom's store.
Technical question: Why don't those Freezers use a hot gas defrost? Is it because of the length of the lines?
Cost. I've got constant temp walk in coolers that use hot gas to raise the evap temp that run 85 feet. It's about the dollar.
@@wtfman5313 Ah ok, thanks for the answer. I just pull Reefer trailers and there the hot gas defrost is the standard. So I was wondering
Good job Chris.
A classic case of pay me now or pay me even more later.
So they just keep paying for service calls every 2-3 months instead of fixing their issues...

I had all 3 fans stuck in low speed. Turns out the harness has a short in the center leg
At my company we call it “swag”… somewhat educated guess lol
Heck yeah bud 👍
I see a reupload I like :D
I had to take yesterdays video down because of audio issues
R448? In a freezer? Nice toasty discharge
Hi
Have you ever said about or tried a steamcleaner to melt the Ice?
Is that good or bad, does that any harm
I’ve thought about getting an electric heat gun for this purpose. Far less water to deal with and it’s not a torch.
mist spray of warm or hot water is going to melt best.
I'm pretty sure those motors couldn't get any wetter so...
or the defrost probe at wrong place, or at wrong stopping temp
Wow Nidec Servo BLDC (ECM) motor.
Awesome video
Do you dry off the ceiling of the box before you leave? Water has infiltrated the motor and causing it to sense a false voltage on the red leg. You have to be really careful while defrosting the evap.
yep, run it until it grenades
A real pain in the ---SS Is a food supplier with 2- 25x50 freezers 3 units each " hot gas defrost with the staff in and out all day
