    This isn't the first video you made about a Pittsburgh at San Francisco Monday Night matchup. Their game in 1978 was played in the wake of the murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk earlier in the day, despite numerous pleas to postpone the game.

    A year later the 49ers were the worst team in the NFL at 2-14

  • @InYourHouse316
    @InYourHouse316 Рік тому +7

    Video idea: The 49ers in 2015 and 2016 were given the shaft by schedule makers to open the season.
    In both years, the 49ers played at 7PM on Monday night in week 1. Both years they had to play at 10AM on the east coast in week 2. (Pittsburgh and Carolina). Both opponents had played on the opening Thursday night game in week 1. Meaning both opponents had 10 days of rest and got to host a west coast team who had to travel 3,000 miles on the shortest window possible.

      49ers may very well have requested that schedule because when they have back-to-back eastern time zone games, they often are in Youngstown, Ohio between games.

      Funny thing is that the Niners got hammered both times in Week 2, then also played on the road against divisional rivals(Arizona in 2015, and Seattle 2016), where they also got creamed both times. Colin Kaepernick in that Arizona game had one of the worst games I've ever seen (2 pick 6's 5 minutes in).

    This is very similar to what happened in 2010 with Benfica & the Portuguese league. For some context heading into their league match vs bitter city rivals Sporting Lisbon, Benfica were 2nd in the table & needed to win in order to keep pace with Porto who were at the top of the table & leading the league by 6 points. This game would be taking place on a Saturday as RTP (Portugal's biggest TV station) was airing it as their marquee match of the weekend. However what both RTP & the Portuguese league failed to take into consideration when they announced this was the fact that Benfica had played a Champions League match in Israel the previous Wednesday (in which Benfica was embarrassed 3-0 by Hapoel Tel Aviv & eliminated from the competition) & didn't get back to Lisbon until Thursday afternoon (with an 8 hour layover in Rome thrown in there), meaning the team had just one day to recover from the Champions League game & prepare for this massive league game. Benfica coach Jorge Jesus was absolutely livid about this & called RTP "a bunch of greedy SOB's". As you can imagine with so little time to prepare, Benfica lost to Sporting 2-0, all but ending their title hopes. Porto ended up going undefeated that season & winning the league by 21 points along with the Portuguese Cup & the Europa League.

      This was a bad night for NFL and WWE fans- the game was a blowout, and RAW was average at best that night. Smackdown had started to be kinda meh compared to 2002, but it was still worlds better than RAW. As for the game, the Steelers made Tim Rattay look like Montana on a night that the 49ers honored Ronnie Lott.

      @@arizonawrestlinginterviews1040 I should mention that I was 15 at the time and in hindsight, as far as the 49ers and Oakland Raiders were concerned, I was disappointed as these were two franchises that were successful given I live in Northern California and from what my family has told me about growing up.
      As far as Raw and Smackdown, yeah I agree that neither was the hit that they were even three years earlier. They're not bad shows by any means, but it is for its fans and not for the casuals as is the case for the NFL.

    Bill Cowher doesn't suffer fools, he makes fools suffer.
    As far as the MNF traveling goes:
    1. That video with the Seahawks traveling: I know in 00 and 01 they shared Husky Stadium with the University of Washington due to construction of (what is now) Lumen Field, so you had that stadium conflict. But wasn't there a week where the Huskies played on Saturday and the Seahawks played on Sunday?
    2. With the Steelers travel here; yeah you could've switched divisional dates but also factor in that the Pittsburgh Panthers also play at Heinz Field; so that conflict could've come into play.

      Yes the Hawks and Dawgs shared Husky Stadium a weekend twice each in 2000 and 2001, including the weekend UW ended up ending Miami's BCSCG hopes and the Hawks nearly upset the Rams the next day.
      In 2011-12 when UW played at Lumen Field they doubled up three times, all being relatively quick turnarounds as all three UW games kicked off 18 and 21 hours before the Hawks did.

    In '01 the NFL, tired of the Dolphins constantly getting curbstomped in the playoffs and the ratings disasters it produced, gave them back to back short weeks in December (Monday, Sunday, Saturday). The last two games were at San Francisco and at Foxboro.
    When the Dolphins still made the playoffs anyway (and got blown out yet again) the NFL doubled down in '02, giving them the same Monday-Sunday-Saturday setup in December AGAIN, followed by yet another road game VS the now defending champ Patriots in case that stretch didn't finish them off. This time their plan worked.

  • @marcus813
    @marcus813 Рік тому +3

    I agree with Cowher 100%. The Steelers didn't have a situation as bad as what the Seahawks dealt with 3 years prior, but the NFL still could've done better. As for flipping the Steelers/Browns dates, that would've had the Browns playing 3 straight home games, so there's a chance the NFL could've made corresponding moves. That date flip can't be done in a vacuum.

      @mgb4692 The thing is, Pittsburgh takes buses to Cleveland. In theory, they could leave Pittsburgh around 7:00 AM for a 1:00 PM game, then be back home by 8:00 PM. Cleveland is literally a day trip due to the short distance, saving tens of thousands on travel. Other combos that merely do day trips include Ravens/Commies, Eagles/Giants, all inter-Florida trips, etc.

      @@appalachianenthusiast9499In-state games involving the Bucs could involve a bus, but if the Jaguars play the Dolphins, the visitor would be better off flying because a ground trip between Jacksonville and Miami Gardens could take up to 6 hours.

    Had played ALL of their prime time games away from home.

    If you want to talk about scheduling controversies, talk about how the current scheduling system is messed up because of the scheduling change in 2010. This change was made because of the 2008 season when the AFC East would play both the NFC and AFC West divisions and caused both the Jets and Patriots had to make 4 cross-country trips to play at Oakland, San Diego, Seattle, and San Francisco. In that same year, the Bills and Dolphins traveled to Denver, Kansas City, Arizona, and St Louis. To avoid this change from possibly happening again, the NFL altered the scheduling system to where teams that would would play either all 4 AFC West or NFC West teams in a season would only have to do one semi long trip and one long trip. In translation teams that played at Seattle would also play at St Louis and teams that played at San Francisco would also play at Arizona. The AFC west paired Denver and Oakland together and KC and San Diego together. In reality, this rule doesn’t make any since due to the Rams leaving St Louis for LA.

  • @chiefrief221
    @chiefrief221 Рік тому

    You had me in the first half. I was ready to be in agreement, thinking where they going: Miami? San Diego? Seattle? Arizona?
    “Cleveland.”
    Damn! Not Cleveland! That’s… [checks notes] 135 miles away? All this controversy…for a 45 minute plane ride?
    Don’t get me wrong. When everyone else gets a home game or bye, and it could be an obvious scheduling flip, it does make you think it didn’t have to be this way. But this is kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel for me.
    And the NFL totally made up for it two seasons later by gifting the Steelers another Lombardi, and screwing over the… [checks notes again] Seattle Seaha- the SEAHAWKS? The team that absolutely got shafted three years before Pittsburgh, and they got NOTHING except a second shafting?
    Damn, NFL. Ya cold.
