The BIGGEST INSTANT REPLAY CONTROVERSY in Monday Night Football HISTORY | Raiders @ Lions (1990)

  • Опубліковано 15 сер 2022
  • In a 1990 week 14 game on Monday Night Football at the Pontiac Silverdome between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Raiders, the referees, with instant replay available at their disposal, did not utilize it properly on the biggest play of the game, screwing over the Lions in the process. And to say that there was outrage about this, especially after a nine-minute review earlier in the game, would be an understatement. This is the story behind the controversy regarding instant replay and MNF.

@@tigercap100 as bad as that call was.. the worst part came a couple hours after the game was over. When photos began to surface of the officials who called that game "celebrating" in the owners box with the cowboys players, cheerleaders, and a ton of champagne... does come off suspicious AT ALL.
And to make it worse. It was because of how the lions season ended due to this, that Suh left in free agency and the defense was dismantled in the off-season.. the Cowboys got their Karma coming around to bite them in the ass the next week. Had the lions of gotten the win instead of Dallas that night. I'm pretty positive that the lions would've won the next week as well. Which would've put them in the NFC championship game

The refs wanted the Lions to lose plain and simple otherwise one, they shouldn't took over 9 minutes to determine where the ball was after the failed 4th down attempt by the Lions and two, they should had waited to see if anymore footage of the fumble was available before deciding if the Raiders could keep the ball or not. Especially if they had time before the 2 minutes were up.

If there's one thing replay would have to look at, it would maybe to see if the Raiders actually picked the ball up and possessed it. It was a Thursday night game rather than a Monday, but the prologue to this video still probably should have included the utterly corrupt ending to the Packers-Lions game on December 3, 2015, in which officials invented an entirely fictional facemask foul for the purposes of prolonging the game for an untimed down, on which Aaron Rodgers threw a successful 61-yard Hail Mary for a walk-off touchdown. It's by far the most blatant official favoritism I've ever seen in an NFL game, and once again the Lions got screwed by it.

This is bad. I saw a play where the opposing team threw a pass that was caught. Then the receiver took a hit and lost the ball. Lions recover inside the 20 yard line. Refs ruled it incomplete. Then said incomplete pass calls are not reviewable. Receiver caught the ball, had control of it, and took a step before getting hit. Don't get me started on the Calvin Johnson rule.
The Lions are bad enough on their own. Why do the refs feel their opponents need a helping hand?

I distinctly remember this game as one of the few times I actually got to watch a Lions home game in that era, and the extraordinary measures taken to allow same. The Silverdome's capacity of 80,500, the awful Lions teams of the 1980s, and the NFL blackout rule meant that Metro Detroiters like then-10-year-old me never got to see Lions home games on television. I actually looked forward to the annual trips to Tampa because that was the only time I would ever see the Lions' Honolulu blue jerseys.
(The then-Creamsicle Bucs mostly, but not exclusively, did the white at home thing, especially early in the season. The blackout rule, for the young'ins who don't remember it, forced network affiliates within a 75-mile radius of the stadium to black out a game that had not sold out by 72 hours before kickoff.)
As the week prior to this game moved along, the Lions were slowly inching closer to a sell-out, but a few thousand tickets still remained. The 9:00 pm start time of MNF meant that the tickets had to be sold by 9:00 pm the previous Friday. As that day went on, the number of unsold tickets was shrinking, but reaching zero by 9:00 pm was looking unlikely.
Detroit's ABC affiliate, WXYZ-TV, perhaps sensing a ratings gold mine, made the decision during its 5:00 pm newscast that Friday to buy the remaining 2,500-ish tickets and donate them to Boys & Girls Clubs of Michigan. The move ensured that this game could be shown by the Detroit, Lansing, and Flint ABC affiliates, drawing much better ratings than whatever locally programmed movie they would have run otherwise, and WXYZ also won praise for the goodwill gesture of donating the tickets to children's charities.
The decision was made during the planning stages of the construction of Ford Field to significantly reduce its seating capacity from that of the Silverdome, largely ending the blackout rule's once iron grip on the Lions. Ford Field seats about 65,000, instead of the Silverdome's 80,500 capacity. Even during the 0-16 2008 season, I think the Lions only failed to sell out Ford Field once.

The NFL has had it in for the Lions for years, for whatever reason. Everyone knows about the Calvin Johnson TD in Chicago that the refs took away. Everyone knows about the 2014 playoff game in Dallas where blatant pass interference was calked, then after Cowboy players ran onto the field without helmets on (a penalty in itself that was not called) the refs inexplicably picked up the flag. They called a facemask on Aaron Rodgers when the shoulder pad was grabbed, which of course swt up the infamous Hail Mary that should never have happened. I could write a 1000-page novel on just how many games the Lions were scrwwed over by the refs. Haven't us Detroit fans suffered enough?
