    Also, the reason why Sony likely didn't just make a "slim" console now is because they've already got molds for their current design and likely have already manufactured tons and tons of the existing shells. Also, from what I'm hearing it sounds like Sony is going to completely revamp the PS5 again next year to convert it from two SKUs into just one with a separate detachable blu-ray drive which can easily be added in later. This will likely become the PS5 "slim" version and will likely become the version most associated with the system if they then stick with that design even for 2 years because the sales will likely be much higher than these past two years given all the shortages which only just NOW seem to be coming to an end.

      Also the slim Ps4 and xbox one S went from 200+ watts and 28nm to 16nm and using 80 watts. this is barely any power reduction, they need to wait for 5nm which they wont be doing any time soon.

    The machine is so quiet, I have to put my ear against it to hear something, this is while playing Ragnarok or MWII at 4k 60 HDR with surround.
    I was disappointed with their second model (1100) as it was too loud and for me it ruins the surround sound when playing in low volumes.
    The 1200 is quiet like a mouse so no worries.
    If you are not sure what version you got you can see the difference right away when you open the M.2 SSD slot in your PS5.
    You'll see metal underneath the M.2 slot if you got the superior 1200 model.

    I don't think newer manufacturing node means cheaper because of size, in chip binning there is always some defect that cause some chips didn't perform as intended, eg. Reaching desired clock speed with designated power target, in this case smaller manufacturing process also have higher failure rate. Either way, I don't believe that Sony is trying to cheaping out to the level of mediocrity. They're improving in every release for sure.

    • @DenverStarkey
      @DenverStarkey 2 роки тому +7

      actualy it is cheaper , cpu's /gpu's are made in a way where the dies are all printed onto a circular disk. the smaller the die size the more dies you can print at a time on a single disk of cpu's/gpu's the more you can print on a single disk the less material that get's wasted. this includes less "edge" chips that obviously can't be used as they are not a whole die on the edges , as well as producing more valid dies veruses faulty dies.
      and the faulty rate defference between 7nm and 6nm almost null , for that matter it's barely much difference between 7nm and 5nm faulty rates. and it actually arguable that fail rate goes down when shrinking the die . smaller die has less heat meaning the chip can with stand more usauge and is less likely to die from heat related issues of a bigger die size.

    • @Bobbias
      @Bobbias 2 роки тому

      @@DenverStarkey theoretically, a smaller die size should mean more usable dies assuming the same defects per unit area. If you have the same number of defects per platter, smaller does would mean you get the same number of defective dies, but more non-defective ones.
      However, being a smaller node means you're likely to have a higher defect per unit area rate, because they will be more sensitive due to smaller feature size. There's a greater chance that defects that wouldn't affect the larger node size will affect the smaller newer one.
      Still, if that defect rate does not outgrow the increase in chips per platter, you still end up with more usable chips per platter, and therefore an increased profitability.

Once, I put the ps5 upright but upside down, and when I entered the game, I don't think it took even 1 minute. The biggest problem with coming out with a slim now is it would have to be a whole new mold for a whole new shell. And knowing Sony they would much rather just keep this information to themselves for the foreseeable future and pretend like they need to keep cranking out these massive cases instead of giving us a nice small case instead. If anything I'd say we're at least a few years away even though clearly they've shrunk the internals easily enough to fit in a much smaller one.

    A smaller node does not mean "smaller and cheaper"...it's the same size...it's just less distance between the transistors in the chip, which means less power consumption for the same clock speed or higher clock speed at the same power draw.
    Also, the smaller the node, the more expensive it typically is to manufacture...so Sony actually pays more for the chip, so that it draws less power
    This video is really misleading people to think that Sony has put in "a smaller chip" to save costs while increasing the price of the PS5, as you can already see in the comment section.
    The truth is that they actually paid more for a slightly better chip and thus increased prices.

    9:40 I do not think the smaller node is cheaper, considering TSMC had a 20% price hike for its chips. Definitely not cheaper, at least on Sony/AMD's side, and I think 7nm and 6nm isn't really different in size on a wafer.
    It's only cheaper if conditions are met vs previous node:
    -they can produce more chips per wafer
    -usable yield per wafer is higher
    -total average of usable chips per wafer in new node is greater than the old node, and can justify the 20% price hike cost.
    Then again, the increase in the wafer cost would affect all nodes made in TSMC so it would make sense for AMD/Sony to make it a bit smaller so that they can cram a few more chips in per wafer, and as long as the defect rate of the smaller node isn't worse on the new node, the shift would make sense.

      This is nothing new. Happens every generation and every model. Even back in the PS3 days there were revisions, refinements, and improvements to the fat models between the launch 20/60 gig versions, the later 40gig one, and lastly the 80gig one before even more refinements with the Slim model.
      Even with the original PS1 you could see improvements and simplifications to the motherboard by the second batch of consoles. Iterating and revising is just a normal aspect of hardware production.

    Manufacturers need to make it very clear to the customers about the different changes in the revisions they do. In my opinion, ok you as a company make a revision to a product. The customers need to know the changes between the revisions. Why hide these statistics as well?
    For example, Austin produced a bag for their viewers and sold it as revision 1. They then try to enhance the product in revision 2 by adding new pockets, new high quality zippers. So the customers need to be made aware of the changes between the revisions.

    • @oldbot64
      @oldbot64 2 роки тому

      Lmao how many people do you think would care/understand about this technical changes. There's no difference in the output on the screen. Most console gamers are casuals who only need to know how to turn on the system and play their games.

      It’d be great if they communicated it, but I doubt the majority of users would care. One of the worse 1200 models might still consume more power than one of the better 1000, and even between units of the SAME revision you’ll find different fans due to Sony using different suppliers for some components

    11:25 well no, because the actual ps4 and xbox one S were using like 80 watts going from 28nm to 16nm.
    You would need to go to 5nm instead of just going from 7 to 6 and only dropping 10% power draw.
