    I love that the show failed to convince us to laugh at and judge Samantha but instead made her an icon. Honestly, the spin-off "Samantha in the City" showing a modern and mature Samantha conquering London with have been a big hit.

      I think it’s the same thing with Girls. Watched the show in my early 20s, when I was younger than the main characters and I hated them so much. Then I watched it again at 30 or 31 and I found myself being touched by the characters, and seeing my 20s struggles in them

    What I love about this show is that it was the first thing I watched where I didn't root for the main character all the time. Saw it before Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc. Carrie is like a weird anti-hero at times, and you can't help but love her at the same time as being incredibly frustrated by her 😂 Plus we love female characters that aren't all good or all bad!

    Carrie's look in the pilot episode really struck me as something I had not seen before in a main character. Usually someone that looked like that was the snarky best friend NOT the girl who gets to flirt with the hot guy. It made a big(no pun intended) impression on me at the time.

    I find it interesting that Carrie is seen as a "villain" and is berated because she's far from perfect. Meanwhile, characters like Don Draper and Walter White, one of whom is an ACTUAL criminal, get a pass.

      Same here! I despised Walter White by the end of the series. This might be unpopular opinion but there were times where I actually sided with Skylar and thought her attitude was justified. He was a complicated character and maybe even worse or the same as some of the villians on the show.

    Miranda has always been my favorite character because i didn't realize how much like her i was until i watched the entire show. When she confronted Carrie about Big, i cheered. Like seriously Carrie stop letting him treat you like trash and then crying about it. Stop already. And Miranda was tired of it. Tired of her talking, crying, and whining 🙄

    • @cv8499
      @cv8499 10 місяців тому +31

      That's part of the reason I've been hating the reboot so much. They turned Miranda into that same whiny, needy, crybaby that Carrie used to be while she let Che treat her like trash. It was just so out of character and irritating to watch.

    • @Choshako
      @Choshako 10 місяців тому +9

      Miranda is the most miserable, angriest person ever, which is why she's always giving everyone else shit, and she mocks happy people, especially happily married women, because she's jealous. She says terrible and cruel things all the time on the show, like when she calls single dads "used" and compared dating them to chewing someone elses gum. If a man had said that to her after she had Brady, she and the other girls would have called him a pig and an asshole, but it's okay for her to say that about single fathers? And you really shouldn't have cheered when Miranda called Carrie "pathetic" in that scene. No matter how frustrated you are with your friends, you don't call someone you claim to love pathetic, especially on a show that claims your friendships are the most important thing. Miranda's love language is straight up emotional abuse, she's not someone you want to emulate. I know people who are just like Miranda and they are a goddamn nightmare to be around, so hopefully you don't identify with Miranda so much anymore, because god help your friends and family if you do.

    • @Ozzie_Mandias
      @Ozzie_Mandias 9 місяців тому

      Miranda is not exactly the definition of sanity... if anything the only woman who is admirable and barely normal amongst them is Samantha. Carrie is obsessive sociopath, Charlotte is a soulless elitist, Miranda is a misanthropic freak.

      @francescaeve8776 9 місяців тому +16

      @@Choshako I don't think she was jealous of married women at all. She just wanted her friends to have interests outside of who they were dating. That's why she was mad that Carrie was so obsessed with Big. He treated her terribly and as Miranda says "you're more than happy to go back for more " She loved Carrie enough to be straight with her.

    • @dakelmo
      @dakelmo 17 днів тому

      @@gigicolada I agree with you the comment about how these “4 white women” were actually a bit too retrograde for their own times and had “ faulty views “ and how this was unrealistic, is absurd. It’s like casual virtue signaling by the makers of the take, in case by even discussing this series they could be seen as endorsing its incorrect views and their liberalism could be called into question. Many liberal women their age in the 90s-early 2000s thought like the satc ladies about many topics even if they didn’t broadcast it. Even those who at least consider themselves feminists. It wasn’t retrograde it was pretty standard even progressive back then. Remember it’s based on Candace bs real sex column. The most unrealistic part of the show is the sex itself. It’s considered abnormal and the relationship is stagnating if Miranda and Steve don’t do it for over a week ? Also when the girls are in relationships they all seem to be having daily sex otherwise they worry somethings off? Carrie is traumatized by normalcy and predictability in any relationship. In her mind, once people are comfortable enough to read on the toilet in their gf’ s house then the relationship is floundering? These women don’t have healthy sex lives as the video states. They have difficulty seeing beyond sex at all in any relationship especially Carrie. And the steamy sex they’re having, boy! And the amount of orgasms with every single new partner they have- through penetration ! The constant screaming in bed and perfect photogenic varied positions? Truly realistic. The other unrealistic part is the lifestyle of these women obviously carrie’s ability to wear expensive couture on a columnists salary for one thing.
      As for the problematic aspects of the show, don’t fear the take says- and just like that is here to “rectify” - some historical realities are apparently too incorrect to portray.

    Sarah Jessica Parker changing the show after seeing the Pilot definitely saved the show for me and I had no idea it was her suggestions. The Pilot of most series is rough to watch but if the characters had really kept talking to the camera, I wouldn't have kept watching. Keeping them as separate, observable people helps to show their flaws whereas pulling in the viewer might've made us too protective and unwilling to explore the questions being asked.

    Samantha IS the sex in sex and the city. Carrie- prude, close/minded sexually; Charlotte-prude; Miranda- more openminded than the rest.
    Carrie wasn’t a “s e x” expert. She was an experience vulture. She just listened to her friends and then broadcasted it for the world as her own.

      Don't do it; librarians have way too much customer service "community outreach" program-running and library social media platform managing in their jobs now. It's less about knowing your literature, managing your team and stock, and connecting one-on-one with patrons anymore unless you're the location manager or work in a small non-chain library. Also, being a public (not private storefront) property means dealing with a lot of a-holes, sometimes on your own, and hoping they don't get beligerent and/or violent. And the police can't do much to remove such folk unless the library is willing to formally charge them with tresspassing. Sorry to burst your bubble, but hoping to save you some trouble. Uh... no rhyme intended, there.

    For me, the appeal of "And Just Like That..." is that its not a direct continuation. I kinda loved that BIG died in the first episode. I cried my eyes out but it was refreshing to have Carrie be someone other than Mrs. Preston (even though she never used that name).

    I do not agree. The same double standards for women are still here. Do they ever ask men how to have it all? No. Women still earn less than men, still have to fight about healthcare and being the main source about child rearing. Women still are expected to maintain the household, earn a living, and fry it up in a pan. Women have to decide to either to take a "break" in work to help out with eldercare. Mostly men aren't asked why they took a "break" to help with eldercare. It is never an issue. Women still have to remain strong for the sake of family and withstand life storms. Women don't get special treatment for menopause, but men get viagra and new wives. It is still all going on... unfortunately.

    HBO, I have a pitch for you. The show would be called Bottoms and the City. It follows four independent, smart, and funny bottoms that live in different boroughs in the city, but have to meet in Manhattan, as it is referred to them as "Work Island".
    "A 34-year-old masc dom top with no money and no place to live, because he's single? He's a catch. But a 34-year-old sub femme bottom with a job and a great home, because he's single? Is considered as tragic."

      This is a genuinely curious question - how were LGBT characters mistreated? The gay sidekicks like Stanford and Anthony were brilliant.

    • @dorian417
      @dorian417 7 місяців тому +8

      @@meliajanssen3462 Hey! Thanks for asking. :) I agree Stanford and Anthony were fabulous. Basically, the LGBTQ characters were always played for laughs. Like every time Stanford's in a scene, there's a joke about him being gay. That may not seem like much but they make his personality being gay. Like imagine if you were hanging out with friends and they couldn't stop making fun of your orientation. There's also the episode where Carrie dates a bisexual guy and is immediately turned off by him. That episode had several harmful stereotypes about bisexual people. Of course, people are entitled to their attraction preferences, but her (and her friends') reasoning for being turned off is that it's "I don't think bisexuals even exist, it seems like a layover on the way to gay town," implying that bisexuality isn't real and anyone who identified as bisexual must be closeted gay. That episode also portrayed bisexuality as a "fun thing for younger folks who like to sleep around," with the ending being all of them playing spin the bottle and Carrie leaves because she's "too old for these games." Like I didn't realize no one her age is bisexual. 😂💀 There's also that implied double standard that men can't be bisexual but women can "experiment with other women" (like Samantha mentions during thr time when she's dating Maria).
      Then there's the time that Samantha says she's dating a woman and her friends don't believe she's gay/bisexual. It's clear she's bisexual but they act like she "woke up lesbian" and is "doing it to piss them off." (Those are quotes from that episode.) They couldn't just be nice that she's dating someone. Then they proceed to make a ton of lesbian jokes about her. As soon as she's not straight in their eyes, she's treated with derision. Then her girlfriend Maria only wants to "take baths and talk about feelings", another stereotype about WLW based on the sexist assumption that "women are so emotional and not interested in sex like men."
      Then there's the episode "Cock a Doodle Doo" where Samantha calls transgender sex workers "tr*nnies" and throws water on them for existing outside her apartment. (An area that was in the process of being gentrified, technically the sex workers had been existing in that neighborhood longer than her.) She complained that she's paying a lot of money to "live in a neighborhood that's trendy by day and tr*nny by night."
      I think there's more examples but those are the main homophobic and transphobic moments I can think of right now. They always made it a problem for anyone to be queer aside from their "gay best friends" (which is another pervasive and demeaning trope for gay men, being treated like an accessory for the straight women and not allowed proper character arcs or 2-dimensional characters.)

The writers and producers projected themselves into these characters, which is why they bore no resemblance to the actual source material by Candace Bunshell. And explains why most real woman are not like these characters, whose actions and personalities are much more in line with gay men.

    Lol, there's so much "for their time" and "of the era" in this review. It wasn't that long ago! Those bad takes were bad then too, and we thought so at the time!

    Charlotte didn’t grow for the better , almost loose everything, cause she was willing to abandon her standards to be with Harry, she could have been without any commitment but Harry is not a jerk like him

    The show's heyday was its first six years they should have given it all up and do other things because the show was also very limited.

    It's a very dissapointing and shallow take full of over-repeated stuff. Is there a single thought that wasn't at least in one of your videos? You have to find new writers, those are out of thoughts.

    I'm not a fan of the show and have never watched a single episode yet women centric shows like these were heavily selling the "white confident independant" woman narrative to the rest of the world. Because of these shows, women of other cultures and races have become disconnected with their own roots in order to have that perfect Manhattan lifestyle in a comfy cozy big city apartment and being on top of their game. Sadly, that is simply not the reality and after all these years, the show and its concepts have become obsolete as showcased by the movies.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with being conservative. You guys seem to become more bias. Being progressive is NOT the be all to end all. I'm a middle of the road person myself, and I find women DO have more options. Women can be conservative or progressive. It's up to us to be whatever we want. Don't let the world of politics and ideology divide us

      The only thing worse than someone sitting on the fence as atrocities happen is the cons actively pushing for atrocities.

      The world is already divided by politics and ideology, and no one group believes that more than conservatives. Because everybody knows that the only people they have a vested interest in "conserving" is straight Christian white people and nobody else. Positioning yourself as "middle of the road" in that reality is the same as openly embracing white nationalism without wearing the white hood.

    How many videos are you going to do about this show? There are better female-focused shows out there.

      Sadly no there arent. There are many bad copies of that show but we haven’t gotten something better than this yet.
      I want a younger reboot though. Four new friends in the city.
      The gossip girl reboot did right on keeping just the setting of the show with new story and cast
      Just got the wrong script and cast.
      I applauded first the idea of the reboot with a new group irs just ughh they messed it up with the new group and the stiffy scrpit.
      The scrpit felt so stiff and so was the new cast but on paper going with a whole new story and leads was the right path.
      Sex and the city needed a new foursome of friends not a continuation of the old one.
      How to make it fresh well this time make the the female characters younger and yeah maybe more typical pretty.
      And yes keep the sterotype or arquerype personalities its what worked the first time
      Too bad im not a,tv priducer id like to recreate sex and the city with a new foursome of friends .
      Same arquetypes just younger this time.
