Door Dash and Uber Eats should just pay the delivery staff a fair wage.

    • @emma70707
      @emma70707 6 місяців тому +4

There's the psychology of it though. Because the US is so spread out and the typical order is probably 20 min plus 10 min of waiting/transit to the next, you're probably looking at $7.5-10 for delivery. Charging $3.5 and then hoping most people tip $5 and letting Dashers pass on these low paying orders to incentivize customers to top themselves (what he should have done probs) makes customers more like to complete the order, I'm guessing, based on their extensive data analysis because at least they get positive vibes from the tip.
In denser metros, I think you could probably get away with just paying people fairly and they should. But then they'd probably be employees because they'd need to limit the number and tell them where to go and schedule shifts and neither of these companies want to pay for people to be employees.

Because they're independent contractors, they're free to work for other delivery services, too. And given most use their cars, they'll also do ride share.
An Uber driver will also drive for Lyft, do GrubHub, Door dash, Uber eats, etc. The gig economy is something you gotta hustle for.

In California all the gig apps offer 19/ hour plus milage compensation for active time if you dont meet quota per hour.

What is the fair wage? Anybody working there has already agreed to do it for the wage they’re getting. They know what they’re getting when I walk into it. They also know what they’re getting as they go along their day. If they don’t like it, go to work somewhere else. If their skills say they can, then they can.

I've been doing deliveries on my ebike for a few years now in the UK and I must say knowledge of the city helps a lot. The busy areas and restaurants, topography and layouts of streets and buildings, shortcuts, traffic patterns, even wind direction!. It all helps to become more efficient in the job and maximize earnings. Although in the UK none of the companies I work want you to do the actual shopping lol. Bike-dasher videos are oddly satisfying to watch, but man is the job tough. I was a Dasher myself some years ago when it was just beginning to take off, you quickly learn that many deliveries are not as straightforward as you think and there will be highs to balance out the lows.

It's not so bad as long as you have the mindset and right gear which can get expensive however. The worst thing is the wind. On Monday we had 50mph gusts in my city so I stayed in and didn't bother working. Not worth the risk. The gusts can come from any direction without warning, catch your big delivery bag and throw you into the curb or even oncoming traffic!

@manoz6194 ive had to fully waterproof my bike and all attached devices including the custom-built charging control panel. That and waterproof socks, pants, jacket, and helmet visor. The most interedtung challenge was the waterproof phone holder. I needed a way to be able to charge the phone in the rain AND a waterproof means of connecting and disconnecting the phone to the charging cable. My solution: mount a wireless power receiver on the outside of the waterproof phone holder with the cable going inside to the phone (with the insertion hole sealed afterwards, and the power source connected to a wireless power transmitter, everything fully sealed airtight. When I mount the waterproof phone case to the handlebar, charging would start automatically (if enabled on the waterproof charging control panel)

For cold weather I use handlebar mitts and levels 1-3 of the military ecwcs (extended cold weather clothing system) and a USB powered heated vest wired to a 50ah power bank. The helmet visor also keeps my face from freezing off by the wind when I ride. I also 3d printed a circular barrier that has holes for the handlebar and cables (such as the hydraulic brake lines and the various thumb-activated devices) to close the gaps between the handlebar and cables that enter the hole in the mitts opposite of where the hands go.

    • @manoz6194

@@denissavgir2881 My phone's already waterproof but just put some sticky tack in the charger port to stop water getting in. As for charging I do that when I go home on my break, a 30 minute charge with a fast charger will last me the whole day. It helps to know the city, that way you don't have to have the screen on all the time displaying navigation. It doesn't get cold enough here in the UK to warrant "heated" gear. The hardest part to keep warm are the hands so just wear ski gloves. Can't be dealing with handlebar mitts lol

I always tip - usually excessively in that I double tip - once at time of purchase as an incentive, and cash on delivery as a reward.
I consider it a revolutionary act that takes power from corporations, as well as a luxury service that must be compensated accordingly.
It also is a way of rewarding those service people who have the required skills.
Relying exclusively on the app directions is not a great strategy.
Drivers should have either a smartphone with a map app or a dedicated GPS unit.
And some knowledge of the area. Spend a free day riding/driving your intended service area.
If it's a downtown area, there should be no map/gps involvement - you should know the street grid thoroughly.
They also need to have an efficient way of getting the items into and out of a secure transport box.
Nothing fancy - just cobble something together with dividers or elastic bands so you can plop just about anything in it and know that it's not going to get knocked around.
The only time someone doesn't get the 2nd cash tip is if they take a ridiculously long time, or my order has obvious damage.
If the order is from a food place that got it wrong, that's not the driver's fault.

My e-bikes keep dying and right now I am too broke to fix it because Door Dash keeps changing earning/pay structure. Worcester Massachusetts is an area that is very brutal on ebikes. Roads have massive holes and potholes, one of my hubs got trashed due to the axle bending. On another ebike, the controller fried out. Even when I pedaled the bike, the controller fired and it's been a nightmare communication with the support reps for that ebike. Everyone has expenses doing these gig apps and when you're out of commission due to failures, you can't work anymore. Been a great couple of weeks.... But yeah I am happy to see that you did this. Shows people that, yeah it's picking up food and dropping it off, there are headaches involved that slow down the pace.

There’s no address anywhere else on the building and there is also no room guide to where you have to go in the hotel to get to whatever room number. And then hear where you have old industrial spaces that have been converted to apartments either there are no apartment numbers or they’re not lit up at night and you can’t see them.

I should make one of these. I spent a year upgrading and modding my bike to strategically improve the food delivery process, including, disposable drink bags and attachment mechanism to the outside of the delivery bag to eliminate spills, helmet-mounted flashlight to identify building numbers at night, and since my max speed of 33mph (2x 1000watt motors) is faster than all but highway speed limits in NYC, I frequently ride with the cars (and usually outrun all of them), I have the following safety features: rear-view mirrors and camera, turn signals on my bike and helmet, and a loud horn. I have 4 batteries being used simultaneously via a special adapter, providing a total of 96ah, allowing me to work nonstop for up to 12 hours with 2-wheel drive and zero pedaling without the need to swap batteries. I also have a speaker to play music while I work. My helmet has wind noise cancelling features to greatly reduce that noise, allowing me to almost always hear the music clearly. I hid multiple tracking devices and have an alarm and brake locks with their own alarms for high-speed securing of the bike. I use either none, one, both, and sometimes the chain+lock too, depending on where I'm parking my bike.
I have also fully waterproofed every electronic device and built a permanently-connected waterproof charging system for every electronic device, controlled by a centralized control panel that lets me toggle charging for each individual device, including some (such as all the turn signals) as a group, all powered by a 30ah (soon to be 60ah) waterproofed power bank. I have also mounted almost all the controls for them on my handlebars. For the headlight, I had to open it up and solder wires to the power button's leads, coming out through a drilled (then waterproof sealed) hole, routing to a waterproof power button mounted to the handlebar with a custom 3d-printed mount. I absolutely love this bike and its a total joy to ride

Wow I sure appreciated your video about a doordash delivery day.
yeesh what an adventure that was!
    soo many dangers out there.
yeah my wife had a few door dash deliveries and after this I can see why she tips them so well.
1 guy was on a scooter - wow
others in cars, a couple had bikes - wow that was something as they were fast!
but not an ebike delivered for us yet.
might not be such a good idea to do as a career. . .

Especially in dense areas where the only option for car deliveries is to block bike lanes or otherwise park illegally. The cities should be making these companies pay a fee for impeding traffic on every order without spaces reserved for drivers and therefore incentivized
them to recruit and keep bike Dashers, e.g. with higher pay.

Thanks for this! I supplement my retirement income with bike gig work at times. Pay? Really depends on good tips! Weather, and a plethora of other challenges have everything to do with your income! Positioning oneself near a group of merchants helps! And I always have constructive projects on my phone/computer to do for in between jobs! Lastly. Is every job for you? Is it paying enough, going into a direction you need to go in? Will you be near other clients after drop off? Etc. It's your equipment. Your energy! You are a contractor! Not an employee!

If you're going to do a gig delivery service, you should probably sign up for more than one. You could be running orders for uber eats and instacart too.
I wonder if it would help to have the trailer with a solar generator inside and some flexible portable panels on top so you could have and extra empty battery charging the whole time. Also a good place to store your water and whatever EDC you need for the day. Maybe a little camp chair, sunscreen, bottle mister and fan to set up on breaks.
Most drivers skip the small orders or only do them if they're on the way of higher paying orders. It's okay work if you're able and out of other long term options, but works best as a side gig to a full time job that has benefits or if you keep yourself below the poverty line just enough to qualify for Medicaid and maybe Snap/Ebt.
Thanks for sharing and opening us up to alternative ways of getting by!

We have two Lectric step thru 3.0s. It's too easy to scrape the inside pedal when pedaling through a turn. I'm going to have to learn to just use the throttle through the turns instead. Other than that, we really like them.

Hi Micah, I'm so happy you're back. I am loving my Propella 7S. I have been using it non stop. I take it for doctor appointments in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I go grocery shopping with it using my backpack. It is really lightweight and such an efficient way to get around town. Without a doubt it has changed my life. You have changed my life through your generosity with EbikesForGood. For anyone that is not aware, Micah is the real deal. He is the type of person this world needs more of , more kindness , more caring of the fellow human. Because of you I will find the right time to pay it forward. Stay safe

It's unfortunate that you don't get to see both sides of the transaction. It would be interesting to see what the customer is paying for the delivery VS what you are getting paid. I would bet that Dash, Uber etc. are taking the lions share of the delivery charge. If you had been in a car, even a very efficient one it seems as though you would have burned up most of your earnings. not to mention uncle Sam will be wanting his share of your pay also. On the Ebike I think it might be an interesting way of earing a few dollars on the side, plus keeping in shape (but you got to peddle...). It seems like your bike as set up, is well suited to doing these types of jobs.

Exactly. Imagine a $100 Sushi order via the app. With 30% charged to the restaurant and a delivery fee? Then YOU get offered $2.50 to go get it and take it a mile? Also, when you get there, you wait another 10 mins or so for it to finish being prepared? 😒 See? And it's raining? Or dark, cold and windy? And although the customer received several prompts, they don't meet the delivery and you spend even more time to text them, and or call them to often times reach their answering machine 😞❗ And then they'll ask you to leave it at the door. Even though they have to come and get it. So now you take pictures to document the drop off! All of that for $2.50. And a 15 minute job is now 35 mins because of the delays❗
