    Thank you for this great video, Marc! Mclaren fan since 1997 here, and even though it's painful not to have won in the last few races, it's definitely coming. Not so long ago we were discussing is it possible for McLaren to even get to Q2, let alone Q3, and since Austria last year, everything has changed. All the little building blocks the team has been adding lately, will sooner rather than later give the ultimate results. Onto Austria, where I firmly believe, McLaren can get a win, if not two as it's a sprint weekend.... Also, one can really appreciate this age of F1 when it's as close as it has ever been. Congratulations to Red Bull and Max too, what a great team!

    Very well said. I think McLaren did very little wrong on Sunday. I think perhaps Lando made a mistake by trying to cover off both Max and George at the start, and ended up behind both. I think if he focused solely on Max, and made sure he got out of the first corner in front, he'd have been able to reel George in, and maybe Max would have been the one stuck behind when his tires got too hot. But easy to say that with the benefit of hindsight.

    It does seem that way. When Max is driving the RBR, even if it's well off the pace, there seem to be all these winning strategies to choose from. When a challenge arises, Max complains and drives around it. In Australia we saw his car falling apart while he was still challenging the eventual race winner.
    Max did a decent T1 having survived Norris' oddly unpunished start, then pulled an overtake out of the hat no-one expected, and from there on it was a standard "Max"imum effort. He could have had all kinds of problems thrown his way, safety cars, etc...and then he'd pulled other moves out of the hat. Winning in NOT the fastest car is his calling card. Have we ever seen someone do it as consistently as Max? It was a Schumacher and Senna thing. Prost as well, when he seemed to wither away, he was actually about to win. Two teams challenging and they IMMEDIATELY run out of tricks when taking on Max in a slower car. Isn't that odd?

    Problem is, the McLaren car is only ever truly fastest at points of a weekend, but never by the margin needed for long enough, which is what allows Max in the Red Bull and their exceptional race team to still pull off a win. It's not that McLaren are doing much wrong anywhere, more that the car still isn't quite consistent enough across all stints/tyres, mixed with just a little bit of luck here and there (Such as the timing of the safety car and getting picked up by it in Canada) which is opening the door for an battle seasoned team that were winning races they probably shouldn't have for the last 10 years simply via being just about quick enough when it matters most and brilliant execution of strategy. It's very close, though, they are still doing a mighty job. A tiny turn in luck (as we saw in Miami) wins them races now, a fractionally more consistent car over all conditions probably takes the slight bit of luck needed out the window and wins regardless like RBR now.

    • @F1Elvis
      @F1Elvis  7 днів тому +1

      Yes, agree. It takes an almost perfect weekend for MxLaren to win at the moment.

    • @liambrowning6962
      @liambrowning6962 6 днів тому

      So, faster on average isn't fast enough to beat Max.

    • @Mrcento
      @Mrcento 6 днів тому

      @@liambrowning6962 Pretty much. Not too different to M.Schumacher in the late 90's/Early 00's at times. He could be 3rd or 4th fastest, losing 2 tenths a lap to the leaders, and he'd somehow just keep himself in the race just about enough, Ferrari would pull a strategic rabbit out the hat and they'd go away P1, with everyone wondering how they pulled that off.
      McLarens issue is all things being equal, they now often will be fastest by a fair margin on 1 stint, but 2nd or 3rd quickest on the others on different compounds or fuel load, meaning they're out of position and using all they have pace wise chasing down Max, who's just consistently been either fastest or 2nd fastest across every stint. The consistency is keeping him in it and McLaren really need a small bit of luck to undo the stints that are putting them out of position for when they are quick. As we've seen, when the stars align and they're out in front on their fast one, they're gone!

    Fan since the first win in Belgium 1968. Exactly my thought on the culture of winning. There's strong evidence that the spirit in this team is #1, they know they CAN do it, but next is knowing they WILL do it. In 2021 McLaren had a patch when they were there or thereabout, In 2024 they have built a solid base with a car that is competitive on any track. The wins are coming. 600+ WCC points this year (2X last year) and second in both championships is on!

    The mere fact that McClaren dared ask Lando to box to cover Russell says it all. This is not a winner's mind set. With thát car and driver, you aim to win. I'm surprised Lando didn't start cursing at his crew. Having Max and the RB machinery as an adversary, there's no room for pussy footing around.

    When Lando came out with his new(ish) softs, he got held up by the two Merc's...he did the fastest lap then was stuck behind Lewis and George for too long...
    Lando's strategy was looking a bit Schumacher-ish in my mind... he's definitely gaining a ton of experience for the immediate future...
    You're so right, RB shouldn't have won in Spain, Russell was a spanner 🔧 in the works at the start and after the final pit stop...

    Yeah, Lando lost the race in Spain the second he started telling the team, who were calling him in for a pit stop to offset Max, that he wanted to stay out to chase down Max. When the team strategists are being undermined by the driver's desire when he doesn't know what the timings are saying they're gonna keep losing. It was obvious the tyres were done and he was losing time to Max. The start may have been the start of the loss but the time lost running too long sealed it.

    We're not even half way yet but I think it's Verstappen's WDC already. He leads Norris by 69 points. Norris needs to win the next 10 races out of the remaining 14 to draw level (with MV coming second) What are the chances of that? Very slim unless RB have a real implosion I'd say. But more likely is that all the improving teams and drivers will take points off each other with no one team or driver being able to overhaul MV and RB now. But some of the racing is pretty good so it's not all bad.

    I have to admit I was surprised to see the Mercedes back towards the sharp end - not a bad surprise, far from it. I had assumed they turned it up for quali. Concerned with how badly Aston have dropped back, it reminds of the FW36/FW37 situation in 2014/15, a good car but with no one else in the gap to the front it at times looked better than it was.
    The Max and Perez situation is very surprising. I understand the car is likely built more to Max's preference but I do not quite understand how Perez can be so far off and we know how brutal Redbull can be with drivers.

  • @cylonred8902

    Every team needs to learn how to win - when they have not won in a long time. All those folks who know how it was like are gone. Norris needs to find a way to start much better, off the line. Not sure the end result would have been different, but he needs to find a way to hold station or move up consistently. the move by Russell was great as was the Norris/Russell battle later on.
    I am starting to doubt some of the Red Bull talking points (that other teams are even with them - no - not yet), or that the tires are going off sooner or inconsistent. Really think a lot has to do with feeding bad info to the other teams, like Mercedes were accused of doing for years when Lewis was winning.

    Well, Sergio Perez's "another disastrous weekend" wasn't entirely of his own making. his team's call in Montreal saddled him with a 3-place grid penalty after and they have sacrificed him in Q3 on Saturday. He still made up four places, no small feat on a track like Barcelona, which helped making Red Bull Racing the net winners.
    (While Mumtalakat Racing's sunny boy bottled the start like a rookie, allowing Max Verstappen and Red Bull to increase their lead and yet he was awarded "Driver of the Day".)

I have seen it many times where athletes, like Perez, sign a multi-year contract and have difficulty meeting expectations. Red Bull has to give him more support. Max's pit stops were around two second and Perez had one at 3.2 seconds. I think Lando has to be more aggressive at the start and force the issue with Max. Beating Max on raw pace isn't "getting handed a win," friend.

      @@quigglyz safety car handed him the win not max. And if he has such raw pace and has the fastest car literally, what happened? Max beat him with a subpar car. The kid isn’t ready.

      @@Robert1187 you sound like a Formulix who doesnt watch facts... Norris had better pace than Verstappen nearly all laps.. McLaren lost time on pits and norris on the start.. not that harsch to comprehend
      I would agree that he's not on level compared to Max's experience but he ain't far either !
      I mean, he has to tell his teams that he doesnt care about covering Russel and that he's after P1. had they not loose time on the pitstops, he would have been on DRS behind Max in the closing laps.
      And again..they had the faster car
      They should have kept another fresh soft tyre but weren't expecting this strategy to come up

      @@Amauvy i get what you’re saying but catching him is one thing and passing is another. Plus when max pitted they asked him to pit and he said no!🤣 what was he even thinking? He makes bad choices and is very immature. He’s got a long way to go. He will get there eventually for sure but i don’t see it now.

      Lando took 4 min off max in the closing stint, the raw pace in the McLaren is there.
