One of my Good friend who travels for a living to all corners of the country. He is 6’3” tall and almost 300lbs. After 2 weeks of ownership he gave me a ride somewhere and he wished he never bought the compass. He said he was thinking only about the discount they were offering at the time and not about the suv itself. He is way to big to be comfortable he looks show horned in the driver seat. He traded a Kia Sorrento and put 100’s of thousands of miles on it after 4 years and it looked like new still. This compass is all scratched and marred up inside with the black everywhere. He admitted to me he made a big mistake. And he’s had many issues.
Issues I have to agree makes me regret this Jeep I bought 6 months ago, first thing is the auto braking and Adaptive cruise will shut off if it's raining or misty out, and I kid you not if you are passing under a overpass and NOBODY is around you is screams BRAKE for a second and then back to normal. I am not happy with these sensor issues and I believe I should have bought the Tesla model 3! Did I mention that the 2.0L Turbo sounds like a diesel engine? The positives are great gas mileage( I have seen 37-40 mpg) and the ride is good and it handles itself when the road gets bumpy, the Infotainment center is awesome but beyond that not enough room in the back compared the Cherokee I traded in.
The ONLY, absolutely ONLY, reason to consider this model is if it is offered ~$10k below MSRP. Yes, $10k. Dealers have tons of them on lots, they don't sell for obvious reasons, so some dealers actually have to offer over $10k discounts to get rid of them. Compass' MSRP just ridiculous, anyone who gets a Compass with a smaller discount makes a mistake.
This is the best vehicle in it's class and it actually competes not with shitty corolla, seltos and other CVT gutless junk - Compass has the best engine (2.0L turbo with way more power), best interior, best 4x4 system - there is nobody in this comparison even close to Compass capabilities, next - interiuor is absolutely on different level - Subaru/Toyota/Honda has absolute just materials and design, Transmission - Compass is equipped with 8-speed TYransmission instead of CVT... so that should tell to someone who looks into spect to compare this to Vehicles from higher segments - like BMW, AUDI, MB, Range Rover - not to cheap CVT 100 hp CUVs )))))
I like the look of the Compass. And I think they have addressed the complaints people had with it. I would definitely buy it except for the price. I don’t really know how negotiable the price is because I haven’t tried to price it. The MSRP is in my opinion too high and definitely dissuades any further interest in it. This car is about the same size as a Cadillac XT4 and is approaching its price. I would consider the top trim Compass, fully loaded with everything, if it sold for $40K. It’s not worth more to me.
Very fascinating that they use a Hyundai transmission. I would personally prefer that to the ZF 9 speed they were using. That tidbit of knowledge is why I love watching you Alex.
Alex, Looking 8:27 at your head and leg room charts, I wonder if you meant to include the HR-V rather than the CR-V?🤔 Either way, the Corolla Cross legroom number is atrocious. 😭
As he often notes, manufacturers measure legroom in a variety of ways. Reviews of the Corolla Cross haven't found it unusually cramped for the segment. You can fit four adult men in it. It may not be great for child seats, but that's an issue for the class as a whole.
@@markmiller3279 The interior space efficiency of most TNGA designs is simply awful. Today's RAV4 has LESS headroom than the last real Yaris hatch Toyota sold in North America! When it comes to occupant accommodation, the current Corolla sedan and hatch are a shadow of the models which preceded them. Many, many reviews have noted the Cross's rear leg room deficiency compared to its chief competitors. Even reviewers who are only 5'6" or 5'7" have drawn attention to the Cross's cramped back seat. I will acknowledge Toyota finally provided ample rear seat headroom with the Cross but neglected space for legs or modern rear-facing child seats. In summary, the TNGA-C platform simply lacks the wheelbase to provide adequate rear seat legroom. In Europe, Toyota stretched this wheelbase for their Corolla wagon to make it a true family car and they should have done the same for every other TNGA-C model.
Stellantis selling a Jeep compass for $50,000 is an indication that they don’t understand the American market. I would never pay that much for a small unreliable suv.
No one will ever accuse the Compass of being best in class The 2024 Hyundai Kona, for example, is light years better. If you stay under $30k, it's not a horrible purchase Just not great.
It might not be fair, but when it comes to American SUV's, I have a general belief that anything that isn't the top dog for the company is going to be a pile.
I like these and been in a few but i am not a fan of the price in the upper end models. Even thought discounts out there it get price for the size. I like it in general tho.
got my 2023 trailhawk off the lot for 29K with summer incentives and trade in of my 2013 mini cooper. does not have panorama roof, auto lift hatch feature, or heated seats but I don't need those options. very nice vehicle imo.
I’ve owned two Jeeps and both had powertrain issues but were fixed under warranty. The 24 Compass drives nicely but my skepticism remains. Lots of discounts are available, up to 20% off sticker. Is it worth the risk? Not sure. There are higher quality competitors out there with fewer discounts.
Different sites put the curb weight of the 24 compass between 4600-4800 pounds. The 22 compass was 3100 -3600. It’s the same size. Smaller engine. What added all that weight?
With its most recent changes the Compass is much better but it still falls short of some major competitors. The car in this video should be no more than $35,000. CJDR has lots filled with unsold, overpriced cars. They need to “get REAL” quickly and get back to fairly priced cars with much better quality and reliability. Otherwise, I think their future is questionable.
Really would like Jeep to make a hybrid version of this for those who aren't interesting in the Hornet's looks, something to compete with the Rav4 and Escape hybrid. Already decided when I go to buy a new vehicle in 2024 Spring, it's going to be hybrid (maybe plug-in) and AWD, so whichever brand that does it best, gets the money I guess. Always feels like the Dodge brand has fun and performance covered but innovative tech, value pricing and efficiency not so much.
I have 2021 compass 80th anniversary edition, and I love it, not a fan of the noises the transmission makes but a great vehicle this far, it 86k miles and is easy on the eyes, but at 24k I payed for the car I probably would have bought a used Acura
Not a fan if the drive mode control placement. Being a paddle and in the passenger side I could easily see it being accidently knocked into other modes.
I own 2020 Compass Trailhawk….poor gas mileage…14 mpg…tiny gas tank 13.5 gallons …have to fill up every week. I am having electrical/electronics problems…light on console goes off and radio change stations instead. Of volume on the steering wheel…when it works..everything is back to normal. I live on a dirt/ rocky hillside road…the 4-wheel systems..NOTVERY GOOD ..I get struck too often….BFG Terrain tires… My rear view camera somehow shifted showing more of the white bumbers , blinding at nights… If need to off roading get the Subaru Cross trek…! Compass is easy to drive and find parking..best feature! Aloha
It's a shame that Europe gets the Compass and Renegade in 4XE plug in, but we do not. I am wondering if this new 2.0 turbo is a detuned version of the Hurricane engine in the Hornet and Tonale? Looks the same in pictures. Reliability is always the question with these. I'd punt it after the warranty is up.
Power train upgrade is good but Stellantis cant justify the premium price with the old chassis. The new Rav4 makes this obsolete. A very slim market for the Compass, no matter the trim.
I’ve got a question about seat comfort. Every car seems to get 7,8,9,10. Is the rating really out of 10 if you only really use 4 options? What would it take to be rated a 5? How about a 3? What would you have to be confronted with to get a seat rating of 1? How much different from a 2 is that REALLY? The seat rating feels like it could be “good”, “great”, and “amazing” and have the same level of specificity.
I was in a 2018 compass Uber a few weeks ago. Something told me to look at the dashboard. Freaking almost over 200,000 miles. Owner said she never had or has to question its dependability. My mom had a 2020 compass limited for 3 years , near 50,000 not a hint of an issue . I would buy another compass as a LONG term vehicle in a heart beat. Just like I did both my 2015 Chrysler 200’s , my dad did with his 2009’town and country and my mom did with her 2002 Sebring and 2006 300C. They never ever fail us😊
Same. Have an 04 magnum with 289k miles the only major issue was a replacement for the gear shifter which apparently subsequent models had recalls. My model year did not
My father's 2000 dodge dakota was amazingly reliable. He bought it pre owned in 2005 with 60,000 miles on it and drove it up until he passed in 2019 putting over 200,000 more miles on it. It never broke down. All it needed was basic mainfence and a water pump at 180,000 miles. Didn't burn a drop of oil either.
Wtf.. 50k for the Compass! I've paid 43K CANADIAN dollar for a top of the line brand new CX5. For 50kUSD I could buy a 3 row SUV right here. I also hate everything being optional, you can pay 50K in the trailhawk but at the time of reselling it will be evaluated based on the cheaper 38k version of the same trim. For me, this case is a totally waste of money
I saw a video by a Mechanic who used this model to review and he said the motor had plastic parts that are vital to its function and very expensive to fix!!! and the resale value is very low compared to Toyota, Honda, or Mazda. I will stick with my toyota!!!
I’m honestly kind of shocked and confused as to why ANYONE would get a fully loaded Compass. I worked at Enterprise for a few years and the updated ones are definitely a lot nicer than the previous, but even the top trim isn’t justified. We’d get in the top end model and the Latitude Plus models and I think the Latitude Plus is a MUCH better option. Dual zone climate, automated safety systems, heated seats and steering wheel, and you can upgrade it with packages for the full LCD gauge cluster, surround view camera, and a couple other nice goodies for under/around 30k and I think that is a MUCH better deal and more logical, and I would understand paying for that mode. This one? No way
@@AAutoBuyersGuide The features I look for in my vehicle are mainly comfort oriented. Heated/cooled front seats, heated rears+steering wheel, adaptive cruise/auto braking, parking sensors. A plus if a vehicle has 360 camera, auto steering, and pano sunroof. If I was looking to purchase new, Seltos/Kona cover most, if not all plus a more powerful engine. I know it's an easy out to point to the Koreans for features, but the Lincoln Corsair can be equipped with most of the features (just did it on their website) for 50K, and taking out the pano roof and heated rears brings that down quite a bit. CPO 2022 Compasses with all the goodies are selling around $30-33k all over the place. If I was dead set on a Compass, I would look to CPO. The new pricing just doesn't make any sense, even the Limited with no options encroaches on base X1 and Q3. Even with less features the leap in overall quality outweighs losing a couple less-necessary features. Sorry for the long essay, I do like the Compass (almost bought a '22 Latitude Lux with the lighter interior, 360 camera and other goodies for 29K), but the new pricing confounds me. TLDR; I would either look to a CPO Compass, new Seltos/Kona, or look to the X1/Q3/Corsair if I was dead set on a fully loaded Compass but could give up a few features for more overall quality/performance. For the offroading 99% of consumers do, all of those options would suffice, the Compass doesn't have any substantial gains over the rest.
The Compass looks fantastic, but I can't get over that price. Ten years ago, the Compass was selling at a discounted price of $16k-$18k. I don't know what the hell Jeep is thinking with their pricing structure now. Quality is not monumentally better and they have questionable Italian engineering now. If I'm going to pick on Jeep, I also need to pick on another domestic manufacturer, Ford. Their cheapest CUV is the Escape, which STARTS at $28k...with hubcaps and unpainted mirrors. Ford and FCA have gone absolutely bonkers with their pricing. It's as if they think they're suddenly well-respected near-luxury brands simply because they've given them pretty styling and inflated the price tags. That's a big NOPE from me. GM is the only domestic manufacturer that seems to be keeping their prices reasonable, comparatively speaking. Chevy recently released the all-new $21,500 Trax. It's about $27k loaded. The Chevy Trailblazer is considerably cheaper as well. Buick released the new 2024 Envista, based on the Trax, which starts at $23,500 and is a bit over $30k loaded. All three of these CUVs are similar-sized to the Compass. I wouldn't even consider a Compass without a massive discount. Even with a discount though, their poor reliability track record has me leery. You really have to be a Jeep fanatic to buy one of these anywhere near MSRP. Anything comparable from one of the Japanese companies is going to be cheaper and will likely be monumentally more reliable and longer lasting. To put it into perspective, you can get a Lexus CUV for the price range of a Compass. Insane. Even the much-derided Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, which can be bought with discounts for $24k-$28k, has a 10yr/100k warranty, a good 12yr reliability track record, an excellent selectable AWD system standard, and 8.5 inches of ground clearance.
This kind of pricing is why Jeeps are not selling and remaining on the lots for 100+ days. Plus reliability remains a problem. Buy a Lexus or 4Runner for the same price.
Seeing all this now that you so nicely displayed the options of the Jeep and others I am now considering hard to buy the Tesla Model Y. The pricing and reliability plus efficiency are really in the running.Yes it might be 50k but tax incentives plus fuel savings makes it no brainer now!! I was really debating a PHEV as well but with gas prices spiking again a Hybrid that needs Gas to recharge batteries is ludacris !!
I'm the EV guy so I'm glad to hear you're considering electric! I do want to clarify (maybe for you, maybe for others reading the comments) that the whole point of a PHEV (Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is that you don't use the engine to recharge the battery. It CAN serve that purpose in some models, but the vehicle is designed to be plugged in at home (a standard 110v outlet will work perfectly for most) and recharge overnight. If the battery does run out of charge on your drive, the vehicle will start the engine and operate in hybrid mode. -Travis
Stellantis is admitting the ZF9 was a colossal failure with its actions. First they retired my Cherokee KL. Now it looks like they took the ZF9 out of the 24 compass, replaced with an outsourced Hyundai 8 speed.
I’ve never sat in the refresh version so they very likely have changed this… but the pre refresh compass has the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. There’s absolutely no way I could own one because they’re just that bad.
Im currently leasing a Wrangler 4xe. I am not sure about long term cost of ownership as Jeeps are notorious for high maintenance costs and very bad quality. I owned a 2014 Cherokee (not the Grand Cherokee) and at 84K miles it completely fell apart. If i decide not to keep the Warngler 4xe I am going directly to TOYOTA and either get a 4Runner or a RAV "Woodland" edition compact SUV. Sorry Jeep.
LOL... Its a jeep patriot with a new outer shell. The patriot was a decent vehicle in the 25k range, (IF... and only if... you got the one with the KIA automatic tranny which they only used the last 2 years).. this is approaching 50k? LOL.....
Kia and Toyota Honda and all them I would not ever get GM doesn't have anything anymore they need to get rid of that CEO It's better than the Cherokee I love the Jeep Wrangler because it's a true four-wheel drive with back wheel drive all Jeeps should be mainly back wheel drive
I bought a Jeep Compass Longitude (latitude elsewhere) 3 years back and I am super happy with the car till now. I bought a Diesel manual and its better than my expectations. Kia Seltos is total shit though priced nearly the same. Toyota is charging too much premium for theie cars and they also have pathetic looks. I think time will tell about the reliability part.

Thus is an amazing review no one ever adds the car seat ,Thankyou for doing it.

You can usually get discounts on Jeep models like this but you're still starting higher than all but a few of the competition. -Travis

Very fascinating that they use a Hyundai transmission. I would personally prefer that to the ZF 9 speed they were using. That tidbit of knowledge is why I love watching you Alex.

😂
You mentioned hybrids...I only see PHEV for Jeep. What am I missing?
He was talking about other brands, and noted that there was no hybrid Compass.
Ah. That's not how I took it obviously, but I can see what you mean after watching it again.
No one will ever accuse the Compass of being best in class
The 2024 Hyundai Kona, for example, is light years better.
If you stay under $30k, it's not a horrible purchase
Just not great.
$40k+ for a non-luxury subcompact crossover is a bit too pricey, IMO.
It might not be fair, but when it comes to American SUV's, I have a general belief that anything that isn't the top dog for the company is going to be a pile.
Interesting take. -Travis
I get the hate on the previous year compass’ but the new turbo on the new ones make it not a bad car
Different sites put the curb weight of the 24 compass between 4600-4800 pounds. The 22 compass was 3100 -3600. It’s the same size. Smaller engine. What added all that weight?
We don't know for sure, but the turbo likely added some. Not 1,000 lbs mind you so I'm guessing there's an error in the numbers.
Jeep’s quality/reliability has always been the issue……..only by discounting their products can they stay relevant.
It seems to have been the strategy for awhile but it's working for them. -Travis
What'd most reliable and durable?
Really would like Jeep to make a hybrid version of this for those who aren't interesting in the Hornet's looks, something to compete with the Rav4 and Escape hybrid. Already decided when I go to buy a new vehicle in 2024 Spring, it's going to be hybrid (maybe plug-in) and AWD, so whichever brand that does it best, gets the money I guess. Always feels like the Dodge brand has fun and performance covered but innovative tech, value pricing and efficiency not so much.
Here in Brazil we have The 1.3 turbo 185hp, 2.0T 286hp and the 4Xe 1.3T plug-in 240hp
I have 2021 compass 80th anniversary edition, and I love it, not a fan of the noises the transmission makes but a great vehicle this far, it 86k miles and is easy on the eyes, but at 24k I payed for the car I probably would have bought a used Acura
You can get these for a lot less than MSRP. Do a quick search and see. These are a pretty good deal when you factor this in.
Not a fan if the drive mode control placement. Being a paddle and in the passenger side I could easily see it being accidently knocked into other modes.
Fully loaded compass limited with all the major options like elite group , sunroof parksense is almost $45,000 now
I was riding in the back seat and it was 0% comfort, I hit my head 4 times! maybe this is good for children
I live on a dirt/ rocky hillside road…the 4-wheel systems..NOTVERY GOOD ..I get struck too often….BFG Terrain tires…
My rear view camera somehow shifted showing more of the white bumbers , blinding at nights…
If need to off roading get the Subaru Cross trek…!
Compass is easy to drive and find parking..best feature! Aloha
why 14mpg?
It's a shame that Europe gets the Compass and Renegade in 4XE plug in, but we do not. I am wondering if this new 2.0 turbo is a detuned version of the Hurricane engine in the Hornet and Tonale? Looks the same in pictures. Reliability is always the question with these. I'd punt it after the warranty is up.
2024 Compass (edit: Sport, not Latitude) 4x4 on sale at my local dealer for $24k right now, and they still can't move them.
Power train upgrade is good but Stellantis cant justify the premium price with the old chassis. The new Rav4 makes this obsolete. A very slim market for the Compass, no matter the trim.
I'm sure Jeep always has the Rav4 on their radar, that may be why you can often find steep discount from Jeep dealers. -Travis
The only complaints on my 2024 Compass Latitude Lux are the horrible forward tilting headrests, and NO spare tire or tire changing tools.

Any issues with a 2018 Jeep Compass
For me, this case is a totally waste of money
wiring harness failed 3 wks into my Compass's life...4 mos later still at dealer In service. So yeah....
This one? No way
If you wanted premium features and were size restricted (or just didn't want to go any bigger), what would you shop for instead? -Travis
Awesome video
Everything Ive read and seen says the Compass has a ZF made transmission. Never heard it called a Hyundai transmission before.
Definitely I need it to draw CIRCLE.
Get a Cherokee Trailhawk while you still can. The Compass Trailhawk can't touch it off road.
$38k for the top trim seems more reasonable. $50k for that is absolutely ridiculous.

10 years ago the price of a gallon of milk was 1.69 to
The quality build is so bad, especially when looking from underneath, you don't walk away from this SUV but you must run as fast as possible.
This kind of pricing is why Jeeps are not selling and remaining on the lots for 100+ days. Plus reliability remains a problem. Buy a Lexus or 4Runner for the same price.
The leather seems low quality …..looks like vinyl.
-Travis

Up to 40 you can make a case for this, not over.
Nice review! The specs are pretty impressive for the class. Hope the Compass' reliability is competitive.

Stellantis is admitting the ZF9 was a colossal failure with its actions. First they retired my Cherokee KL. Now it looks like they took the ZF9 out of the 24 compass, replaced with an outsourced Hyundai 8 speed.
It could also be cost, the ZF 9AT is expensive from what I understand.
That price is insane for that vehicle. Its reputation is terrible and they want $50,000.00.
Besides the price, this is still a handsome car inside and out. Well packaged too. But that price kills it for me.
I’ve never sat in the refresh version so they very likely have changed this… but the pre refresh compass has the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. There’s absolutely no way I could own one because they’re just that bad.
I wouldn't call these seats uncomfortable but with the minimal seat time I had my initial impression was firm seating. -Travis

It comes down to the little things, but those aren't going to be worth it to everyone. -Travis
Sorry Jeep.
