Horrific battery fires are not limited to EV's. Bicycle and scooter batteries have maimed and killed people along with setting houses on fire. It starts smoking intensely then explodes and kills him because he is in a confined space and can't get away from it. I would charge an EV bike or scooter outside AND store the battery outside away from buildings, or just not buy them with lithium batteries?
Bicycles and scooters are vehicles.
@@robertwilber1909Didn't your mother ever tell you "nobody likes a 'well-actually' know-it-all", Robert?😂
Just like Rimworld taught me
Li-ION batteries in genera are problematic in general. Most garbage truck have a fire every few weeks related to these being improperly disposed of.
They are still quite safe given the sheer number of these batteries around the place, it's just that larger batteries carry a lot more energy and have the potential to do a lot more damage, especially since they are harder to extinguish.

love manual long time.
I'll stick with my tiny 20 year old Toyota. I live in the UK so the roads are terrible and so overcrowded moving anywhere is slow. The used car market might be cheap by usa standards but the running costs are massive. I won't go to London £12 per day to move from your property. Bristol is £9 per day. Fuel taxed to the max $8.5 dollars per gallon but it's sold here by the litre so we don't riot or die of heart failure. £1.5 per litre looks so much cheaper. Motorists are easy targets for tax, because who would willingly give up their car, I'd give up my house and live in a vehicle before I gave up my own transport.
Old Tacomas are gold
Bring back horse and buggy.
Push bike does me, but I don't have to travel hundreds of miles to my job, I mean what's that all about?
Yes! No idiots on cell phones with a horse at the "wheel"!
Yes corn on the cob 😊
If the horse breaks down the vets bills are equally bad it can kill the horse or the rider. my car is far far cheaper than my daughters horse bills, they also seem to be addictive. The amount of work involved in maintaining a horse is crazy, but people adore them so maybe it's worth the effort at least horses aren't taxed.
@lynne2774 just don't let the horse throw then shoes.
Early Tesla owners were claiming "no antifreeze". Far from the truth. They have very complicated coolant systems with multiple pumps and valves. Most Large Drive Units leak coolant at the shaft seal within 100K miles. If not caught early (pull speed sensor to view), it can ruin the motor. Aftermarket has a retrofit. Current Fiat engines also have a rubber timing belt inside the crankcase in oil splash. It actually works, but belt changes are then like an OHC timing chain swap.
An older car with manual transmission, is way better than a new hybrid car. It will run forever.
I just bought a brand new one, manual. Out the door under 20k.
I beleive changing your synchros and rings would correct the fifth gear issues. done many. I dont throw honda or toyota transmissions away because they slip out of gear.
Till it doesn’t!
I'm going to buy a new car with a manual transmission in approximately 6 months. Edit...and it won't have any turbos either.
@@billschlafly4107 The new Nissan I just bought, 5 speed manual, timing chain not belt, no turbo, not direct injection(will not carbon up the valves). Pretty much bullet proof engine and tranny if maintained decently and not abused. Not all the computerized "high efficiency" crap that will give you problems. Has a touch screen for the radio and rear view camera, but buttons, knobs and switches for the rest of the controls. AC, power windows and locks, cruise, for under 20k out the door. 40 mpg in city and highway combo driving. I love it.

Where can I buy a car made by Scotty Kilmer? Sounds like this guy more than the car companies.
The guys that work on cars know more about the engineering mistakes because they are obliged to fix those mistakes as best they can, but some of those mistakes are not amenable to any repair, no matter how expensive those repairs might be. A Tesla over the air update is not the same as a Twin turbo V6 Toyota pickup that takes weeks plus to replace. The news reports all tesla's OTA updates as a recall even though the owner of the car doesn't sacrifice any time.
Teslas are notorious for having basic repairs and body work take weeks/months in the shop
I bought a Oldsmobile cutlass with a 350 rocket in 1986 and it still drives like a new one. had to change a few gaskets here and there but that's all. I will never buy a new car or truck that i cant pull, and rebuild the engine myself if necessary. NO COMPUTERS in any car that i drive.
I used to just be a regular pedal cyclist, 2 years ago I bought an ebike. Nothing but issues, the warrenty is a joke, constant breaks and no one to fix it. Going back to Analog life.
More dangerous by far. You might can get around that using aluminum air batteries but you can’t charge those. However that would cut the cost of using lithium. With lithium a single small crash can be fatal because the explosion if the battery gets punctured. Even just driving a few years from today. They have the ability to spontaneously explode.
So do gas powered cars too happens all the time
Really? Gas powered cars just explode or catch on fire from like a fender bender?
I offered a practical solution. Look on UA-cam about exploding phones. Now think. How big is that battery? Now the same battery but for a car. Not phone that fits in your pocket. How big would that be?

Vehicles involved in fires per 100,000 sold.

Gasoline: 1,530

"involved in fires" is not the same as "cause of fires". Reading connotation is very important.
I would rather get rear-ended in an EV than an ICEV.
When the EV goes up in flames the fire department isn't going to be able to put it out - FACT!. So all fires are not equal. EVs take out the things around it too. Like your house. Even worse, in 2022 an EV fire sank a ship named Felicity Ace full of Porsches and Lambos and Ferarris. Meanwhile, children or working barefoot in African cobalt mines for pennies! A simple air cooled brushless d/c car is the most simple car in the world. Electric can be the most simple but there is no control in a car built to last 25 years. Henry Fords wife loved her Detroit electric and refused to drive gas. Electric can be the most durable but where's the control in that. Plus a simple ev is EMP resistant.
The problem with many new 'off road' vehicles is that they fall into 'limp mode' when they really go 'off road'...
In marketing we used to call the early adopters "Guinea Pigs". Nowadays the people that rush out to buy the new model vehicle are the "beta testers".
How can anyone with a brain buy an ev. No infrastructure to handle them. The grid can’t charge them. They battery last five years, with a reduction in power and efficiency every year. The new battery cost basically makes the car disposable. I simply cannot afford to throw away a car every five years. I can’t imagine how bad performance is in five years. My phone basically has to stay plugged up after five years
Where are you getting your facts? 95% of all EV owner charge their vehicles at home. I have a 10-year-old Tesla on the original battery, seems like it has degraded by around 10%. It has been a lot more reliable than my 15-year-old Pathfinder [which I also love]. I replaced the engine and tranny at 125,000 miles at a cost equal to the Tesla batteries. Will I replace them, no...I will throw the vehicle away as it already had 112,000 miles on it.
@@waynegardella6263 common sense, rolling brownouts in the summer from air conditioning usage. What happens when everyone plugs their car in? Maybe you should give apple your car for study, because I can’t get one to stay charged after five years.

“not ready for prime time”. I’ve been saying that for years.
Tesla's warranty sounds a lot like many tech companies. You send a broken product, and they keep it for awhile, do absolutely nothing with it and send it back to you, saying they fixed it. Or, they send it back and claim it's a brand new item, when in reality they basically just went "return to sender".
If you modify the emissions systems its a federal emissions felony yes you can try to clean them but you have to know how to do it properly
Florida does NO emissions testing, so nobody there cares, often just replace old cat with "test pipe" instead.
My dad was an electrical engineer at local news station for 48 years doing electrical repair he told me never to rely on batteries it will only get worse as more powers obtained and it still rings in my head to me after 26 years of him saying that to me from now seeing all of the fires and hazardous waste from lithium ion

Strange, RX450h melts down in garage and Scotty complains about 1) Lithium batteries being dangerous and 2) Toyota should be using proven technology and they aren’t.
Well Scotty my read is 1) the Toyotas and Lexus (this one) predominantly use NiMH batteries, not Lithium. 2) NiMH has been around for years and is proven. Any car can melt down, remember the Cherokees in the 80s and the Fieros. My late father always said, one one catches fire, they all catch fire.

My first car was a 1979 Buick Lesabre and I eventually bought another one that was near mint condition and very easy to work on. My last vehicle I miss very much was a 1992 Toyota 4 Runner and was also easy to maintain. Unfortunately a person who wasn't supposed to be driving anymore ran into the back of it going about 35 mph in front of my house and that was the end of that. I'm hoping some day I can get either one of those vehicles again but they increase in value depending on how it was maintained.
Check insurance on ev its insane, normal people can not afford them then theres limited range and charge time it unreal.
I have both an EV and an ICEV. The cost of the EV insurance is $150 more a year. If you can't afford $150 a year you shouldn't be watching any videos, you should be out looking for a new job, aye? The cost of any vehicle with the performance of an EV are pretty much at par. Find me a nice equipped ICEV that can do 0-60 in less than five seconds for less than $45k.
I don't buy the more trouble than diesel comment Scotty. Exhaust aftertreatment systems break always all the time when you least need it to break and contribute to a lot of money in tow truck owner's pockets.
our 2003 honda accord is still awesome ....we use a mechanic like you ,,,, the dealership service is over priced ....we think you are a genius ....however our son, who lives in CA ;loves his EV which charges up where his parking place at his apartment home
Tesla's announcement to sue Scotty Kilmer shocks the entire industry and he's mad as hell about it!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have nothing against EVs. If you want one buy one. Just don’t MAKE me buy an EV.
There is no profit in real craftsmanship. It is contrary to the only thing left of value in our society and perhaps globally and that is profit and greed. Like a ponsy scheme eventually all the money will end up in a few hands and there will be nothing left that's worth owning or having. Oh!..we have that now!
I relative purchased a Testicla and now has to get an uber to get back and fought to the nearest charging station while it's charging or wait there until its being charged, sounds like fun
EV stands for Error Vehicle
I read online a person had a brand new Honda Civic, and only had 100 miles then engine light came on.
SPEAK your opinion Scotty---It is still a FREE world...I agree with you and we alll appreciate your opinion...
I got a bill for my plug in hybrid (2019 BMW 5). $10,000 for hybrid electrical stuff. NOT EVEN THE BATTERY. I traded for a non-hybrid.
EV's may have less .mechanical moving parts, but they're not simpler.
Scotty would hate my car, VW, turbo, dual clutch, transmission fluid for life…but it’s 9 years old and drives like new. I’d be afraid to get anything newer these days. At least it was made in Germany and not Mexico…1 good point.
I have a Toyota Corolla 1.8 hybrid 2023 over 20000 miles now still drives like new excellent mpg would never have a full EV but definitely would have another Toyota hybrid
Scotty can show more proofs against EVs than my old geometry teacher in high school.
I had a good geometry teacher, i got 100% on all my tests so he just let me sleep through class. Good times. Although all these years later I remember next to nothing I learned then.
“proofs”, huh.
The older Prius has a non-Lithium battery that is safe in them, but the newer ones, some or all, have gone over to the dangerous Lithium type battery pack. If you get a hybrid, make sure it's not lithium based battery in it. Most new hybrids now do have Lithium battery packs. My youngest daughter still drives her 2004 Prius with few problems. The only one was replacing the ABS on it with one from a junkyard.
Great advice, THANKS👍
My 2000 Ranger is bullet proof mechanically.
Teslas EV mechanic course is 3 months for all the right to repair you want .
I have a 2024 Toyota bz4x i only got one key after about 2 months for a key
5th gear popout - synchroniser issue.... may be repaired if you can get updated parts otherwise get a rebuilt one if it is relatively cheap BUT look for reputable sellers.
Still have to remove the trans and take it all apart
I agree with Scotty might as well just replace
Sorry, I don’t understand. You’re getting sued for talking about what?
Btw, enjoy your videos! Keep ‘em coming’
The Fiat 500e is a joke. At 43,000k miles the battery is degraded so degraded that no the car Is totaled by insurance because the repair is more than the car is worth.
a lot of newer vehicles have a lot of infotainment problems, running up the number of repairs….a lot of unresolved problems…
If people wanna keep wasting their money on these things let em. I’ll continue just routine maintenance on my Hondas like I have for years now.
I don't see electric cars 10 years old, they will need a new battery by then, what is that going to cost? Will it be worth fixing?
If you drive around 12,000 miles a year at 120,000 I would throw away any vehicle that needed a new battery, a new trannie, or a new engine. It is all the same.
10 grand for a first GEN unless I personally know the seller for the car history. …That’s a no.
I have a 2019 Laramie Longhorn 1500. A few times it goes from Drive (D) to flashing N and stops driving until I stop and put it back I to Drive(D). Dealer doesn't know what is up, do you?
I'm so happy to be retired with my 2010 Honda civic.
They use lithium batteries in RC toys and we charge them in fireproof bags
Toyota which Scotty constantly praises has to replace 100,000 Tundra engines but yeah EVs are bad, Kia also has to replace engines but won’t even though the warranty is for 10 years. But I digress Ice cars in their 100 year history has never had a problem according to all the comments hers!
My Nissan Pathfinder needed a new engine and trannie at 115,000 miles. My Subaru blew a rod at 90,000. My Chevy Bolt has 79,000 miles on it and doesn't have an engine or a trannie nor rods to throw. The battery hasn't lost any juice and the tires last 40K. miles. I agree with with you that EVs are not for everyone but don't pan them either.
You can say what you want because all license mechanic can see problems .
I agree about EVs but hybrids are fine… we’ve had them on the road since the 90’s and there has never been all this hoopla about Batteries burning up etc… plug-in hybrids are way more dangerous.
I start laughing just seeing thumbnails of your videos! You are awesome! 😂😁
