- We ride our Fuel Injected 500cc 2 Stroke Motocross bike for the very first time...and it might well be the most fun big bore dirt bike we've ever ridden!
We love a dirt bike build project here on 999lazer, so far on the channel we've created the 700cc Megalodon and the YZ500 YZilla. Our mission for 2023 is to build the most advanced 500cc MX machine in the world; with a fuel injection system, counter balance shaft, power valve and an electric start. To fit in with our monster theme we are calling this bike KONG!
In this episode of the project we are finanly hitting the track on our BRC Racing powered 500! Max and Sean are in for the ride of their lives. We hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed filming! :-)
A big thank you must go out to our awesome sponsors for making crazy projects like this possible and for helping us make these videos!

Best thing since sliced bread, I think you may have brought the 500s back from the dead brother.
haha thank you, that's the goal. This bike is so much fun and easy to ride:)
@@999lazer it looks it mate, u have given me the conversion bug, planning do mine now next year. Check the brushes in the starter they wear and it goes lazy then, maybe pig of job tho has engine need to be lifted to access starter
My motorcycle company is planning on making 500s again in full production, aka a full motorcycle
@@Sir_Bob. What is the name of the company and website?
@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443 The no website still working on the CAD model. The company name is OSSA motorcycle I have the trademark paperwork
DAaaaaaammmmn! ! ! I miss my 86 CR 500. One wheel power slides, effortless 5th gear tire lifts, teeth full of bugs ! What a machine! Keep making it better guys, we love it.
Long life the 2 Stroke!!
hell yeah, thanks for watching
Sounds and looks so crisp, can’t wait for you to put the 2 500’s up against one another 💨💨🚀🚀
A lithium battery should give the ampage you need for the button starts, and they're quite a bit lighter than the stone age batteries. It's another one that will be good to go to supermoto style with! Great work on the build!
thanks for the tip , yes this one is road registered too so we're planning to do a supermoto set up with it too. I'm sure it will be a riot on the tarmac :)
@@999lazer a modern 500 supermoto for the street is on my bucket list. I’m keeping an eye out for used YZ 250 to drop in that engine you guys used. Would be too much fun!
@@999lazer Great stuff Max. I have an Antigravity lithium battery in my CR500, it has the Panthera E.start. I have the very small one that fits in the airbox, I looked to see which model I have but the range has completely changed now. It has lasted well and I would recommend them.
Panthera Motorsports has a special lithium battery that sends 24v to starter only but recharges on 12v and runs 12v lights etc. It was developed for their 500c EStart kits.
@@leonrawls892 Cool thanks, I haven't been on their website for a while. Extra voltage should spin it up faster.
It sounds much crisper and throatier than the YZilla for sure! Awesome content that keeps getting better! Thanks from the "terrible" USA
The channel gets better with every upload guys , Max you looked super comfortable on that bike, would you say its because of the fuel injection and counter balance shaft makes it mega smooth?
Both you and shaun are doing a sterling job riding Kong but would really like to see the 2stroke legend Nev test and hammer Kong and the yzilla around a big fast jumpy track.Any sponsor that supports 2stokes will get my money for sure. 👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Nev's out with a blown knee at the moment. I'm sure he have a go when he is fit again.
Man this is freaking awesome Max, you guys were killing it out there, looks amazing to ride, cant wait for more! 😱👍🏻🎯
Thanks Dave
Looks awesome. Big up to 24MX for giving the support to help this project come to fruition. I love how y'all didn't just go with black and added the detail of Kong's fur for the "black" on the plastics background.
Thanks Vinny, yes 24mx did us proud in this build. Glad you noticed the fur effect too :) it looks even better in the flesh. Thanks for watching.
It’s the cranking amps you need to look at for the battery. Go Lithium, smaller lighter more efficient. Great vlog👍
Another great video. You were both flying. Bike is lovely. A Shorai battery. Get the biggest one you can fit in there and a new starter. When the starters get worn they draw too much current and take it away from battery. You can service them. But after all that work I would just stick a new one in there. Make sure all your earth connections are clean as well. It does make a difference. Great video. Love the bike. Hope that helps. If that doesn't work you might have to look at a bit of engineering to make it work better. I am sure that you will solve it. Awesome bike.
Great video Max, or should I say Dr Frankenstein that's three monster 2 strokes you have created, top work from you're team , totally inspiring what you all achieve , thanks Max.
Thanks Kevin, it much harder than you'd think to make it all a happen, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Thanks for watching and I really appreciate you always taking the time to leave a comment.
Loving it and can't wait for the next video . Thanks Max and Sean ...............
Thanks Scott
Yes! Yeeeesssss! Kaplan keeping the classics alive and you doing these crazy restomods. It’s beautiful.
Thanks
Great video man! I've enjoyed watching you grow as a rider and creator..from the 500 intimidation, to the 500 addiction ...keeps shedding Max!
Thanks buddy, I never thought I would be a big bore rider, but these BRC engines are something else and I'm totally hooked.
@@999lazer It's hard to go back down till your about 50yrs.old bro!
It sounds so smooth, with lots of mid range. Your mechanic is the man
Sean and Roland did an awesome job. They make it look easy. Thanks for watching
@999lazer no problem, that bike is awesome. Always loved the big bore 2 strokes, but very cool the way things have changed. I will forward to the next
Can‘t wait to see Kong also on Supermotos🔥🔥
I love the way at around the 8 minute mark it spat him out that corner like a mouthful of beer with a wasp in it.
You must not watch Caplan Cycles. Sounds killer. Can not wait for that mix up!
its coming pretty soon :) we might event throw the Megalodon 700 into the mix too :)
@@999lazer Wow that's awesome news. I can't wait for that collab.
Awesome bike and looking forward to the kong and zilla shakedown.👍.
Thanks Kevin, we can't wait for it :)
It is like watching my dreams having a yzilla… or even just to have a humble yz250 two stroke is so overwhelming for me… wow just wow… thank you so much… at least i have a chance to watch clips like you are making sir. Dream is a dream
I REALLY want to see both the 500's and the 700 unleashed on a more open motocross track with a pro racer or even a couple pro racers to go against each other on all 3 bikes. would be awesome to see.
Love your content Max! Keep it coming.
Thanks Brian
Love it. I’ll take one pls
Can't wait for the next video.
Thankyou
These big rippa's are killer. Can't get enough 2 stroke.
Showdown looming
the showdown is coming soon Eric :)
Quality and can’t wait for the next one
Thanks Tess
Great build guys!
Sounds like its a torque monster. Doesnt sound like it revs as high as my 96 CR500 tho. I like building for top end power on the 500, since there is abundant torque anyway. Id delete the battery and starter! You got to be a man to ride a 500 and being able to start it is a prerequisite in my book. Save a lot of weight too!
What do you do to get the 500s revving and more power top.end
@@leeparker5279 porting, Noleen pipe, shortened silencer, milled head. I think the pipe and silencer add the most up top.
To much fun.
I have a 2021 te250i that I recently converted to TBI and it drastically improved the throttle response. The seat of the pants dyno also say it has more power. I have had some weird running on occasion. You should dyno before and after the conversion.
Awesome well done
You should be able to buy a bigger battery box from later years. I had to do that on my 2016 KTM. Purchasing the 2018 larger battery box, & the battery I use is a 210 cca Shorai LFX14L2-BS12 Extreme Rate Lithium Iron Battery
On the suspension might not be a bad idea to switch it to the XACT pro A kit forks, if you don’t wanna break the bank technical touch sells a kit where you can slide in the SSS KYB internals in your existing outer fork tubes.
As for the rear shock switch out the piston reservoir for a bladder kit, makes a world of a difference, especially on the square edge bumps. Good luck! 👍🏻
Sick! Cant wait for the shootout.
There's also a bendix mod I believe. Engages at higher starter rpm.
Best sound in the world!!!
Not sure if it'll prove to be the Fastest or most reliable. But, it is definitely responsive. Sounds great. Great job.
Thanks Dennis
😢your lucky guys when I was younger I allways wanted a Honda 500 the closest I got was a maico 490 still a absolute beast of a bike though. great video as usual max . 👍
AMAZING build 🤤 🤤🤤
Thanks
This brings back many memories. Enjoy the beast (Kong), ride it like you stole it!!!
Thanks, I will try for sure :)
"EXCELLENT"!!!! ✌️😎👍
Thanks
@@999lazer
You have given me a idea,
We have RZ-425s 'Cub' engines here in California.
In Japan they had the Yamaha "TDX" 250 twin?? I think. Anyway it was a "duel purpose" bike. Now think, what if a older, CR-250, (91, the chassis was too stiff)
'Fucked' and made a motocross bike??? 100 horsepower, motocross bike????A twin cylinder two-stroke???!! MX racer!??
Nothing else stands a chance against the YZilla, or the"Meg", and now"KONG!" Or what if it was💡 "fuel injection"!!!?????
Your Northern California buddy. ✌️😎👍
Was good seeing it go around the track max , couldn't touch it on the 450 😅
That bike looks insane man. Love the orange hubs and black plastics
Thanks Jack.
@@999lazer no worries. What track is that mate?
😈😈😈😈 greasy track not easy ... 😈😈😈 nice
Yep nice job dude ! Little john from chichester
Thanks Little John
Best channel ever love it
Cheers Lloyd, that means a lot
Great job guys! I recommend a KYB conversion for the suspension if you want it to compete with the YZilla.
Anything but WP!!
@@craigdavies8099 ya Ohlins is really good too, especially on tough tracks!
@@jpesicka999 Love me some Ohlins!! Both my CR500 and XR650R have them front and back.
Amen to decent content 😮🙏🇬🇧🤘😎
amen to great comments :) thanks for watching
Antigravity 8 cell battery is what you need. I have one in my KTM 500 exc-f it turns over twice as fast with that battery. I am pretty sure it has the highest cold cranking amps for the size battery you need also.
Man you should build a modern Cr500 Alu frame honda. Would be interesting to see how the ”original” Cr500 powerplant would compete to the BRC one.
Very enjoyable and interesting Max 👍 Perhaps do a dyno run with tpi and then TBI just to see if there's a difference ?
The TBI should add a couple of ponies, but we will do it and find out
I run the Antigravity 801 in mine with an electric compression release instead on the mechanical release.
Once you've been bitten by the Power Bug, there is no cure...
100% Thanks for watching Dr Hugo
If all else fails, call Riley and see if the Gen 2 TPI kits can use a 24v starter conversion like the Gen 1 BRC kits used. It makes it turn over twice as fast.
I have one and there is no issue with the Gen 2, initially I was using the stock battery but upgraded to a antigravity 801 and the electric compression release just makes life simple. Tap the button and go.
What a thing to behold if u love 2strokes and fairplay you broke it in well
Thanks Derry
@@999lazer thank you for this brilliant video 👍
The holy grail to bring back 2 stroke is injection. I wonder if a 2 stroke running on hydrogen would be possible in a bike.
Antigravity batteries has some higher output batteries.
TBI should increase the power because of better mixing.
Why does it have a magura rear brake caliper and I'm assuming master cylinder? Did the Husky I'm '17 come with it? I thought being owned by KTM they used Brembo... Brembo can over heat easy so I run a really high boiling point fluid, but there's no issues with stopping power, especially on a track with grip. Is the front atleast a brembo? When I went back to Yamaha I had to come up with a way run the brembo system with oversized front rotor, it made me spoiled and the Nissan wasn't cutting it. I can get away with pretty much any rear brake, I rarely use it, but the front has to have a lot of braking power with just barley applying pressure to the lever while still being progressive. No one does it better than Brembo... I've always wanted to try their expensive 'SXS Factory' calipers they sell on the KTM PowerPart store, they're about a grand each, I'd love to get my hands on one for the front.
It's been awhile since I had my last KTM, but I believe the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder was also Brembo, where for the longest time those were Magura and pretty much any hydraulic clutch set up you buy for bikes that don't come stock with an hydraulic clutch are Magura.
I'd love to get one of these built fir the new 2023 EFI bikes rather than TPI, they're quite a bit different so I doubt their current package would work for the SX 250/300.. and then take that engine with HINSON clutch and clutch cover (cover up all the KTM branding since it won't be in its chassis), use some custom titanium engine mounts and hangers, swap all the electrical and intake components, and then put it in a YZ250 chassis with the aluminum frame and KYB SSS forks and shock...With the extra torque/power and weight of the engine, it'd probably need revalved and/or sprung before trying to set sag. Yamaha has my favorite stock fork and shock, by far, and the WP stuff gets expensive to swap it out with the KYB spring conversion, and im not even sure if that's the same as the SSS, i'm assuming it is..The chassis and overall feel of a YZ feels like home whereas the KTM always felt like I was fighting it, but I love the engine characteristics of KTMs big bores in particular.. the 300 was amazing..plus they keep updating 2 stroke technology. I'm just not a fan of WP AER/Explor forks or the chassis. I don't know if its just that k like a more rigid feel or what that the Aluminum gives me, but the steel frame or its geometry never gelled with me. Part of the reason is the foot peg placement always felt off, I probably should of tried finding different/adjustable peg height and have the ability to move it a few mm forwards or backwards.
My perfect bike would be YZ frame/chassis/suspension, KTM EFI SX300 power plant, and a full Brembo brake system front n rear... and I guess at that point I'd have to run a hydraulic clutch, but if possible to swap it I'd rather run cable for the connective feel it provides over hydraulic.
i want to see the yzilla, kong, and megladon on street wheels on a paved drag strip!!! that would be the ultimate judge
Sweeet!!
Only yzilla and kong ?
Are you gonna let the legend cr500 and kx500 not join the party 😂
Let four bike race brother 🎉
yes we are :)
Why did you have to say “you never thought you’d be a big bore rider” I always thought the same of myself now I’ve gotta try one which I know is gonna lead to me buying..... ffs 😁
Haha good luck
Checkout YZ/CR500 Fi on youtube, built 10 yrs ago approximately in New Zealand !
1st efi CR500 shoehorned into a YZ450 frame from memory ?
Try a ag-801 that you can make fit. Past that you might need a 24v. Thought brc had compression release maybe its faulty.
I got 2 of these...on mx bikes
Hi. Any chance that we could see a same day dyno session with a worked over CR 500, the 'zilla, Kong, and Mega? Sort of an "apples to apples" dyno test. Thanks!!
Will you test this on the dyno as well?
Yes we will for sure.
Someone needs to put that engine in a Svart/Vitpilen 401 or a 390 Duke.
I think the YZilla has probably got a better frame than the Husky but that fuel injection system is going to be the breaker here I think.
A mate in the national hill climb club built one (carbed) from a ktm getting on 4 or 5 years ago the bikes down in Cornwall deffo first in the country ,its quik with a huge huge flat track type pipe on and nice with the balancer etc but on track it's no faster than my 88 steve clithero 500. It's nice as it's all new but 10k for the kit alone you got to reeeaally want one ☺
Its the counter balance in the motor that makes the biggest difference as it gets rid of the vibrations an old school 500's have. I guess the other big advantage is you can get parts for the BRC kit and its getting hard on some of the old 500's too. Thanks for watching Dan
Agree just a good lithium battery
I would check out Antigravity and see if they make a battery for you. The onws ive seen have been double cca. Also my 250xc i always have to kick cold but can estart warm....hopefully you dont have to do that.
another great bike another great vid, looks a little soft on the fork, rebound little fast,
yup, suspension is next on the list to sort out, but we couldn't wait to ride it :)
@@999lazer super beast
How many cca does your current battery put out. In au we have one that fits the husky 300 that puts out 240 cca
Imagine that on concrete 😮💨
fuel injected 2 stroke exist since a long time.bimota v-due for exemple
what about a compression release for starting?
Yes it has one Dave. Thanks for watching
Do a carbureted KTM as well
Zero g batteries are the best
Thankyou
Are or did you dyno it as tpi to see the difference between tpi and tbi nice work as always
Not yet, but we will do
Wonder if you could put a big bore kit on the HR 250 Suzuki that your dad's got
Is this Husqvarna fuel injected as well as oil injected? To me true fuel injection would be premix in the fuel not injected separately.
Yes it is, but the second stage of this build is a BRC Racing conversion to a Throttle Body injection system that allows us to remove the auto lube and use pre-mix. It will be in the next film.
@@999lazer Awesome! I love the 2 stroke like most dirt riders do. I have a ktm- 300 xc and I know their 2023 300 xc is throttle body injected. Excited to see that build!
the only logical step is making a 800cc 2 stroke turbo dirt bike. taking a snow mobile engine and fitting it in a dirt bike frame
There is a 800cc single made by specialty sidecar builders.
On a cr500 or kx500 it is already proven to beat a 450 this will make it easier to own a blue smoke bike 💯
What is the make and model of the pump up center Jack stand you’re using with this bike?
This is the exact stand we use buddy. Cheers!

Put it on a dino
I wish ktm would make this a production bike.. I think they would sell really well.
I wonder what 1 tooth bigger back sprocket would do maybe get rid of that waiting for the power band and not have to clutch tap it to get it on the pipe faster idk what gear he was in around the corners
Is that the ‘donk track’ mx track?
Primero 🙂
Thanks :)
What track is this by the way also?
Now build a 125 fuel injected
Yeah…A higher amp battery should do the trick…my guess is the starter is pulling too much power and starving the engine management and fuel pump during cranking
Is this track open to the public if so what’s it called cheers
can u guys pls do a banshie swaped into a 450 frame pleaaassss and make the pipes come all the way to were they should be on a normal bike and 2 pipes thanks
Anti gravity batteries
Ag-801 he would be set
I have to say I’m a bit disappointed that you didn’t do black faux fur on the sides of that seat cover…
My forearms fell off while watching this.
The yz500 looked quicker
we will find out soon enough :)
I like that gas can you're using the fuel up the bike what is that gas can called?
