I bought my copy a few hours ago, I'm loving the game so far, the biggest surprise of the year because the game is exceeding my expectations!
I bought my copy 2hrs ago. Drove home finished my 4th Sekiro Playthrough for Platinum Trophy and now im installin Star Ocean. Greetings from Germany!
If the VA work and mouth flaps off?
My personal advice:
-Focus on getting new skills and stats in the skill tree before you worry about upgrading old ones. Upgrading will cost much more SP after a few levels, but only provide marginal increases. However, once you have all your stats boosted, those upgrades will start to have more impact.
-The [No Guard] passive ability is busted. Get it, equip it, and prioritize its upgrading when you get to that stage. Since your AP bar drops anytime you flinch from taking damage, being able to guarantee no flinching from all but the most damaging single hits helps you keep your bar nice and healthy. Characters who get this skill will trounce your enemies, especially if you invest in their defense and hp nodes (makes it harder for enemies to beat your flinching threshold).
-Once you get synthesis item creation, plan to train everybody in it, eventually. It has the rule that you can only synth items the crafter can equip. since everyone has their own weapon types, they will have to learn it if you want to make powerful weapons for everybody.
-Elena may seem overpowered, but she has a slight disadvantage until late game; she will not get new weapons as other characters do. Her choice of weapon is a piece of tech, and since Aster 4 is underdeveloped, they have no means of making weapons she can use. Once you leave Aster 4, that's a different story. Until then, she must craft hers via engineering, so make sure to build her skill a bit earlier than your other party members will build theirs.
-Every character has access to the [Auto Healing] skill, which allows you to regenerate health in combat. This is a godsend early game. With an appropriate setup, you wont even need Nina, the primary healer of the game, to be in your active party, freeing up a slot for another damage dealer.
-The targeting system in the game is wonky, at best. In the heat of battle, it can be quite an ordeal to get it to focus on what you want to hit (and in those fights where you're up against several spread out casters, this becomes infuriating). Get accustomed to using stop mode when you want to target something specific. This applies to targeting weak spots, too. I find it helpful to begin your VA floating, enter stop mode, pick your target, unstop and let loose.
-When using VA to blindside, keep in mind that you can make multiple attempts in the same dash. It drains your gauge, but being able to correct your approach can get you out of a bind.
Auto healing is good and all too bad if NOT on earth mode its pretty much useless since on Galaxy/Universe mode being hit even once either means dead party members in 1 hit or losing MORE HP then AUTO heal even with it at lv 1 will heal for.
Learn the exp/fol boost skills ASAP and KEEP them equipped until you hit lv 255 then the exp boost skill at the cost of that 1 party member LOSING Guts/Physical defense stats won't be needed.
@@veghesther3204 Fair point. I am operating under the experience of earth difficulty. I completely forgot about the EXP/Fol increasing abilities. Does anyone know if they still function if the party member isn't in the active party? I'm guessing not, but that would be a welcome surprise. For Laeticia's EXP skill, it can be helpful to leave her on AI, while you play a different character. With 0 DEF, she will get staggered with every hit. That will kill your AP bar, but not if you're playing someone else. But nothing compares to being over level 80 before you even set foot in the final dungeon :D

Really great advice! I didn’t think of using stop mode to bypass the clunky targeting system, and all your other advice is great too!
I've heard that playing the chess like game gives you serious advantages at the start of the game.

#6: Shops have delivery quests. I didn't notice them until I was in the 4th town lol
And to add even more: those delivery quests unlock new shop stock, some of which is incredibly rare or powerful, like SP seeds and unique consumables!
Delivery quests are definitely worth noting!

I'm in the last dungeon and just found this out with the comment. Mind you that's my least favourite thing from star ocean 4.
Im gonna add another one: whenever a party member leaves your party (even ir for 2 minutes, which sucks and happens a lot) their accessories will be unequiped. So whenever they are back remember to equip them again (its annoying, yeah)
I made a thread like this for the subreddit because the game has loads it doesn’t tell you. Two key PSAs that I’ll share here are:
A LOT of people miss the side quest log thanks to the small UI. You need to press triangle on the region map screen (NOT the world map screen) to see all your side quests!
Secondly: I had the opposite problem where I thought the stop menu was the only menu tool in combat. It took me 25 hours before I realised that in the other menu, you can CHANGE PARTY MEMBERS AND EQUIPMENT MID-COMBAT. It’s on a 30 second cooldown but it’s vital for certain boss battles where you need to adapt to certain enemies and tactics. You can even use item creation to make some stuff whilst fighting against gods!

Thanks, I was so mad I thought the game doesn't show you a list of side quests you accepted so I ended up skipping them because I couldn't remember.
The auto heal feature was one of the most helpful things I discovered as I am playing through the game. If you press the stop mode you can get a option to press a button to auto heal and it'll use your items and automatically heal your characters. It makes healing characters after battle really fast if you have the healing items to spare. Star Ocean 6 is really good so far. I'm really enjoying it's one of my favorite JRPGs released in 2022 along with Trails from Zero.
Nice to see Lea from Kingdom Hearts show up in another game :3
The parts where the protagonists split are actually really fun. Stuff happens to both protagonists so there is a sense of confusion and urgency when they tell you about what happened. It makes the world feel alive and organic as multiple things are happening everywhere. Plus it prevents you from getting too comfortable and reliant with your preferred party set up since you cant control who joins who.
Those are both very good points. I enjoyed how they did it too. Getting to use the different characters made the gameplay feel more varied.
Really loving this game. Also, the visuals are actually pretty good aside from the rigid speaking animations. In terms of crafting…I got Alby to lvl 10 Alchemy and upgraded my mythril to some 4star mats to have Ray make some crazy strong weapons/armor. Rainbow Ore and Dark Matter seemed to give some decent results
I’m looking forward to playing this game, but I made a promise to myself that I would replay SO4 first…..I’m almost done with it and then I can join in the fun of this game.

Actually There is 1 character you can play against in the Seaport of Rythal that you get the Eso'wa deck. There is an Apprentice little boy (Coro) located East most of the map. You can see the white icon is larger than most NPCs indicating this NPC is interactable.
Yup you can also complete the mission from the lady that gave you the deck once you get coro from the kid to get dorne aswell

This game continues to exceed my expectations. I think a lot of older Star Ocean fans had really high hopes for this game, yet a sinking feeling that it would be a bit of a "miss" or "another miss" depending on how you look at it.

I just started this today only couple hours in and I'm really enjoying it. I'm seeing there is plenty to do and thats what I love about jrpgs. I havnt played a good jrpg in well over a year so to me this is refreshing and I am liking the art design and characters so far

Also additional tip you can zoom in the map and look for large white dots that are actualy Esoa npcs just incase your tryin to look for all of em 👍

Kidding aside, here are my tips:
1. Level up the Scan ability on DUMA first. It will greatly expand its search radius, allowing you to better search for treasure in the field with less stopping and scanning. I also recommend equipping and upgrading the Strike Gain and Reduce Assault abilities. Strike Gain increases the amount of VA gauge you gain when attacking an enemy and Reduce Assault lowers the amount of VA gauge that is consumed when blindsiding. With these two abilities, you can be zipping around the battlefield, attacking and blindsiding like a madman, increasing your VA gauge to max within seconds of loading your save file.
2. Focus on unlocking new abilities and skills in the skill tree when levelling. Go for the crossed-swords icons to unlock new skills for chain combos ASAP. This includes new strikes for Raymond and Laeticia, and new spells for other characters like Albaird, Midas and Nina. Specifically, unlocking and equipping Letty's passive ability "Determined Princess" is a great skill to increase the amount of EXP gained in battle for a trade-off in her DEF and GUTS.
3. Use characters who aren't proficient in Item Creation (IC) in order to create 'failure' items. For some reason, the game only gives you SP towards an IC skill if you fail or create low level items. There are a few quests and shop orders where you need to turn in these failure state items: Tattered Robes, Bizarre stones (crafting), among others so hang on to them after grinding out some IC.
4. Return to previous towns to view Private Action scenes with your party members. Don't be afraid to fast travel back to previous towns you've been to, especially when revisiting Welch for her quests. Speak to your party members in town and you'll sometimes view Private Action skits with them, improving Ray's or Letty's relationship with specific characters and getting some more back story and character development. They're a fun bonus.
5. Passive abilities on your characters only work when they're in the active party. Put characters who have abilities or accessories equipped that boost FOL or EXP gained in battle in your active party. These boosts don't provide any benefit when they're sitting in the reserves.
Thanks for Tip #5. I was wondering if the party gets more EXP if Leticia with her skill was sitting in reserve. Apparently not.

Raymond became my busted tank on the first planet. Man didn’t flinch much and hit like a truck.
I've played all the games as well and let me tell you i love the creation in this ver since creating items its extreamly useful for weapons that you become overpowered very early in the game with the right ores that you find.
About 15 hours in and wholly agree w/ you that (1) Elena is OP! She's got a lot of fast / powerful moves to take out enemeies quick! (2) Thanks for showing how to use stop mode! I did the exact same things as you, put blue berries / sages on every character's as hold/charge buttons. Now it'll be easier to go through the hard bosses and be able to equip more attacks.

I just finished with the Game today. I agree with everything you said about this game. Esowa was not introduced well. But they could have marketed telling the player that the cards also add bonus stats to your character. I like to use Elena, Marielle, and JJ. I used Nina at the end because of her buffs and let the CPU go to town on Bosses

Elena was a given for me anyway, she has the fists of fury skill. Love that attack in the other games it's in.

I like the new Star Ocean so far however there are 2 things about it I wish were different. 1) that tiny font it a problem for me. 2) I hate it when the party members start talking outside of a cutscene and you lose the ability to use your scan function
The not being able to scan, look at map, look at inventory, etc, etc while they are talking is a real pain!
Who the heck thought that was a good idea?!

There I am, trying to open the door to Welch, but I can't because Welch is talking on and on about how I need to hurry up and get to her!
About the font size, get a larger television. If you are using a PC, I hope that you game an AMD graphics card because AMD graphics cards can easily be hooked up to a 4K television as a monitor.
How big? I'm playing on a 55inch and the font is still small for the tutorials that pop up
The font is definitely an issue for me as well i literally have to sit closer to my flat screen smh
The small font is horrendous, I can't understand why there hasn't been a fix for this yet.
For the board game side thing there is a kid in a ally across from the item shop that is easy to beat right away. Plus going back to the lady who gave me the deck rewarded me with some stuff. Plus the pawns you get can be used as accessories. They are not great as that but early on they’re good.
This game looks really fun. I'll probably give this a shot.
It definitely has some jank, but I'm enjoying it a LOT more than I was expecting (and I'm a fan of the series). Hope you enjoy it, if you do decide to pick it up!

I agree with your point on es owa. it was a mess to try to learn. I was getting frustrated because I didn't understand how attackers worked and why my pieces were getting knocked off the board
but once you learn and get OP pieces, you dont even need to craft / buy any accessories
@@axelus2 Facts. There's one that's like, +20% fol and +100-something% (135?) exp if your combo count gets to at least 50. Another gives 600% stagger resist when using semiomancy, which is a huge boon for Midas (and Albaird, I like using him for spells, surprisingly, wish he got more of them)!
True but the game play has really grown on me after you get the hang of it it can be Really fun imo

W...wait, you can use Stop Mode items in battle?! I feel like such a doofus, I got reamed by the giant blue worm in the mines like twice because it kept getting lucky shots in and I didn't know how to get healing items to work on my party members xD
And I'm glad to know unique party members for each playthrough is a returning feature! It really feels like the team behind Divine Force looked at every older SO game to determine what the best features were, and added them to the game :D
Yeah but the only thing I feel missed is cancel bonus
Get Raymonds Smithing to 10
Laeticias Crafting to 10
Albaird Alchemy to 10
As soon as you get access to Alchemy from Welch, Alchemize gold/star rubies/mithral/etc until you get Moonstone, a 4-Star Mineral, and Smith Raymonds Fire Blade, and Leticias High Int Blades(they are more powerful than the other low int blades that craft at the same lvl). You should see Welch fill a bar across the screen when you get them. Craft Armors with Raymond and Accesories and a Bell with Laeticia and laugh as you just crafted weapons 10x(Literally) more powerful than what you can buy in the store. And to lvl Crafting skills with SP, go to strengthen skills menu and select I.C. Menu.
You must have missed the kid in the back in Rythal for Esowa. I was able to beat everyone except one guy at the bottom of the stairs in that town before I even found the ring.
Another really helpful tip is that in stop mode you can also change party mechanics like how the a.i. targets and make decisions in battle

@@Concavepompano3 he said he had to go back before he could battle anyone in Rythal. First npc I played esowa against was in Rythal right after getting the deck as soon as I could get the deck is all I was saying.

The berserkers aren’t really worth using until you get the 5 star ones. At high level, the opponents all have several assassins, so they’re good to have to get them to use them. Plus, you can put them alone on the bigger maps to try and get the opponent to spread out their placements. I’m currently running 5 of them and obliterating XD. E’sowa is pretty easy tho so..
Elena definitely has it where it counts.
The high end berserker pieces are worth using in es'owa. I wish square would make a competitive multi-player online game where we could play es'owa together and triple triad from FF8 which was addictive as well. They had triple triad on mobile through the square portal but it wasn't done very well.

I have to disagree a bit on Berserkers. Later on some of them have such high attack that they become worth using. Otherwise, I kind of agree.
Yes, they are good as an opening move on larger grids because of their high initial strength.
Clearly though, the basic Berserkers you start with are useless so dump them for almost anything else ASAP
Yep, can confirm having one or two high level Berserkers is dope. You can bait your opponent to waste units by surrounding them, or waste an assassin (if they have any)! They get you some good early damage, too, since you always take the first turn.
Haven't lost a game yet, but I came EXTREMELY close because the guy had maybe three of them and a hero early in the round that gave them a big lead. (Enfeeble allowed me to win, tho; it's OP.)
I would play Ray first, as it'll explain how Ray got to the plant which would help a lot.
One quest to Davidvinc, is there a skill called Perfect Blow? I ask as one of the guids that I'm using says that one of the skills I should get for Laeticia first is Perfect Blow, but I can't find it. Does this come under another name or is it for another character? Meaning that someone missed up.

In the 3rd town there is a little boy down a side alley by the area where the doctors was that you could play at beginner level i found him when i passed through the town
Dunno if anyone has brought this up, but: while I was also a bit frustrated about es’owa being talked about without being able to play it at the start of the game-I luckily happened to run right up to the NPC handing out the deck just because I saw them marked as a quest on the map. From there I also had the same issue of finding anyone in that town that I could play-BUT-I actually did find a kid in that third town that I could play. I think the rule is that you can only play opponents up to one rank above your own, so it allowed me to play this kid, and after I beat him I immediately ranked up.
I was able to continue going from person to person in town, tracking down who the next opponent of slightly higher rank that I could play against, until I’d eventually beaten them all.
Only caveat was that I found it really odd that I ranked up after every match, so that after only 4-5 games, I’m apparently Master Rank…like, shouldn’t that have taken longer? Does it reset in each town, with the object being to track down the right order to play your opponents? Dunno. But I thought it worth mentioning so you don’t feel the need to back track all the way.
Though your going to want to beat each one atleast once for their es owa figure which some are really good accessories and also same applies for collectors
@@ericschauer5950 oh definitely-I don’t even know why this game bothered to include the standard accessories-most any es’owa piece knocks them out of the park.

just so anyone knows. you can craft philosophers stones early like in chapter 2 after you get alchamey and the mithril stones. you can get mithrils early in chapter 2 or wait til near the end of it when you get to the royal capital. and then go from there. i crafted a bunch. but they cost money to craft

I agree with you on Elena. She's too good. Since I started with Raymond, I generally go Ray, Elena, Nina and then rotate a 4th. Right now, it's Marielle, but I switch in Malkiya/Midas at times. I don't care for Albaird at the moment.
one rather minute thing i figured out embarrassingly late is that you dont actually have to hoard weapons like you do in older star ocean games. after trying out the demo, i got back in my star ocean mood and decided to replay the second story until this came out, and because of that i ended up hoarding every weapon i got in case i needed it like you would in so2 for customization. it took waaay too long for me to realize all you need is materials to get better weapons LOL

Only the default berserkers are bad, once you get the ones that lvl 5 ones they do around 200-300+ damage
what difficulty have you been playing?
I have never played any of the Star Oceans ... Can I start with this one or do I have to play the others to understand what is going on in this one?
I just started DQ XI. While I got the Divine Force with a GMG voucher, it'll be a long time before I get to it.
dq xi and star ocean divine force are like such 90s throwback games. best 2 games of the last 10 years

@@ericschauer5950 I turned on all Draconic Quests since you can nope out of them later if they’re turned on but you can’t opt in later if they’re turned off. So… game is pretty damn hard so far, but doable. We’ll see, I’ll probably stick with the challenge, unless it just proves to be maddening.
Excuse me David..or anyone else available..do you have any tips to resolve anyone of these problems I'm currently having?:
1. How efficiently level up everyone's craft levels & make craft grinding less tedious.
2. How to do shop quests?
3.Good Build ideas for Theo? Like you I'm really feral for this man, but I fail to make him as good as my other characters- I've noticed that he's a bit similar to Ray but with longer range..so could I just build him similarly, or is he built too different for that?
Midas is just bro Myuria. Liightning blast + point blank is just as good as 4.

When you're on a really big grid in esowa... 300+ atk power berserkers are actually not too shabby.
Yup. I use two to bait my opponents, and get easy big damage if I get them early on! Haven't lost a game yet!
Elena playing such a major role in gameplay is actually really drawing my interest!
I didn't realize you could assign items to combos
You can assign active skills, too! One of my favorites is using Laeticia's point-blank cross-sphere move, then All In (damage buff), then her tornado attack. It's awesome.
Which story to do first?
I want to get the game but too many games coming out right now and wallet is taking a beating. Waiting until Black Friday to see if there are any deals before committing.
Anything involving the touch pad on ps4 is always my last guess lol. Still just not used to it.
Stop mode still is lackluster because of the animation which leaves you open to attacks compared to last hope ...good video good game

Beserkers are awful early game but once you have the best ones they are pretty much OP. You put them near the corner and let them get your attack high fast.
I wish I knew you could swap out reserved party members in battle through the camp menu. I got over 10 hours in before I knew that was possible since that wasn’t an option in Stop Mode.
This game looks cool.
JJ May look pretty wack, but dear lord he hits absurdly hard. He can literally kill major story bosses in 2 hits, without any sort of grinding or anything like that. His big charged-up slash attack does over 100k damage when you first unlock him.
berserkers are the best in the deck even though you lose a bit of the attack when using them next to another pice i generally use them first then use the hero if there in my hand its really easy mini game fact the AI is dum in the mini game also with every play through your rank stays with you you just have to redo all the matches to get your deck back
No tournaments like the older games with like a 100 battles?
It took me ten hours to find the quest log. It's a pretty solid game so far but def could use some polishing. The UI is the biggest problem on this game.
Thank you for all your great Star Ocean content. I’m a sucker for good action JRPGs like Tales and YS. I was so disappointed by SO 5. 4 was cool but the story was cringe. This game seems amazing though. I’ve only been playing for 5 hours and I can already tell this game is quality. Keep up the great work.
Heres what i learned:
Elena's Assassin killer move spam is straight up broken.
Esowa's Berserkers is what carried me to grand masters and are not useless if played correctly.
Also about esowa, I don't know if this was a bug but you start a new game with the other hero, you can challenge anyone even grand masters in the start.
Mages are still ass. You can pump more damage with physical attackers like older Star Ocean games
The waiting around for 5 seconds to dish out LESS damage than Elena/Raymond in 3 is just so sad to watch and play. I still play as one of the mages just to see the big boom animation to literally still going on while the fight has already ended. Good times :D
@@15Seili Yes, then you have Tales of Arise where the mage is like one of the stronkest and can just hover mid air raining down death.

The only thing I wish was different is that A.I. members don't get boosted AP from blindside kills, which can cause them to stand around like idiots if their chain combo is higher than 5 AP.
just bit note for other players, esowa pieces are busted accessories in early to mid game. so defeat all esowa player as soon as possible.

I agree that low level Berserkers are awful in E'sowa. However. . . .Berserkers with an attack of 300+ are totally worth it once you get them. Even when nerfed by adjacent pawns, they're still dishing out 220-250+ damage most of the time.
Is anyone else kind of creeped out by the bust-focused camera? When did Star Ocean turn into Hyperdimension Neptunia?

O don't give a care about these outrages negative toxic reviews man this game is an absoutle blast to play ppl today just don't appreciate anything I Don't get it loving the story characters and this amazing battle system yes I know graphics could be a Lil better but if you look past some of the flaws my God you will have a freakin blast thank you tri ace and square for this 😊
I wish I knew I’d be refunding it. But, I guess that worked out in the end anyway.
