Family is by far the most important feature of Filipino culture. My wife and I have just returned from a two-day staycation in Baguio with her sisters and their families. We are fairly wealthy and it was our treat but it wasn't a case of our assuming we were somehow better/superior just because we have money. We offered them an outing and they accepted. It was a very Filipino affair with bodies scattered all over the place in the lodgings and communal dining and having fun. I think I counted about 17 people, most of whom were kids. It was good for them to have a family outing coming out of quarantine and I was more than content to take a back seat and experience their happiness. I join in but they know I am quite a reserved person, more than happy to sit with my book, and they respect that too. My brother-in-law and I even snuck out to have a beer, under the pretence of sourcing a restaurant, to escape the familial mayhem.

Filipinos are very kind people. Treat them with the
upmost respect and you will be treated very well.
Every time I arrived at the airport in Manila the immigration officer always said welcome back.
That makes a foreigner feel special.
Thank you for making this video. You do an excellent job. Did you study journalism?
    Just curious!

I found most Filipinos to be incredibly fake and two faced. Some are nice on the surface but will talk behind your back. Hospitality is only extended to those who can offer them something in return. Nothing is unconditional with filipinos. There's always gonna be a "what's in it for me?" attitude.

Precisely Savvy. Mutual respect is invaluable . It's prudent and imperative that foreigners observed local cultures and traditions . B humble and never try to b arrogant just because u think u have more financially or because u r d provider for ur wife/partner's need .To have a cordial relationship respect d elders and ur gfs family too.. u DNT need any capital to adopt such values but just humility .
    Another excellent video Savvy👍🏼👍🏼🙏♥️

We have reached the Lolo and Lola stage of life with my wife's family. Still quite a few people older than us, but we are rapidly moving to the upper age reaches of the family. It is really an odd position to find ourselves in. And it is very true, dropping even a word or two of Tagalog into a conversation with a Pinoy will give them quite a delight. Our last trip in I corrected a 7-11 clerk who mis-used a Tagalog phrase with me. His co-worker smacked him and told him how embarrassing it was that an American had to teach him how to speak Tagalog. We all had a good laugh over that.

    Tuli,
A great video. I am a Tito to half the town. I love the way all the kids make mono or give a blessing. I have found that Filipino families are smotheringly close. I have also seen a lot of men who made a "milk" run. I love the culture. I have to sing in public. Most were warm in my direction. I have had to learn quite a bit of Tagalog. I love Filipino food. I like adobo. NEVER criticize the country. Do not discuss religion and try not to put down the church. Most will tell tou their favorite candidate and often the locals are catholic.

Most of my friends have onion skin. I have have been rude in the past. I have learned to speak less and listen more. Young people value the elderly. Most of my friends are Christian and Catholic. I love a good joke. Most of my friends are easy to hang with, regardless of age.

Filipinos don't like criticism whatsoever. They don't know how to handle it. Intellectualism is greatly frowned upon. Filipinos prefer superficial distractions and entertainment over actual problem solving or deep conversation (Why do you think the Philippines has no great authors, scholars, scientists, engineers, inventors, etc?). This creates a culture where nobody says what's on their mind but will whisper it behind everyone else's back. Gossip culture is big and it's hard to tell who you can trust. It's a very "group think" kind of culture so individual opinions are tossed aside in favor of the good of the group.

I think for me the more weird and bizarre the culture is the more interested I am, and would ask tons of questions to learn about it. Although I may have trouble when it comes to food, I'm a very picky eater and won't try certain foods at all, like seafood. Excellent video, full of great information, as always, thanks for giving it straight and not try to sugar coat anything.

Once again excellent video Evan. I’ve been married to a Filipina almost 7 years now. It’s the best move I’ve ever made. When I met her family for the 1st time in person they were all warm and welcoming to me. Her mom was skeptical because of what she heard about foreign men being abusive. I didn’t blame her as I am a big ugly guy but with a loving heart. By the end of my stay I won mama over. We now divide our time between the Philippines and USA. Bought a farm and a few rice fields . I’m Jewish but attended church w, my late 1st wife was Muslim, so you can say I’m an equal opportunity husband. Lol. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos Evan. Take care and salamat

The old western man I visited in PI was adored by his girlfriend's family.
This was a conservative family. Women cooked and served meals to the men.
They didn't join the table and ate after the men were served.
The old Western man was not married to the Filipina.
She was his housekeeper in Canada. Then, they became a couple. He was a racist and didn't participate in any Filipino customs like honoring elders.
His redeeming quality that trumps all faults was that he had lots of money.
Nothing is honored more than money in PI.

I miss the jeepneys, trikes, street vendors and having to worry about the crooked taxi drivers lol. And don't get the oysters from Wolfgangs Steakhouse by Shangri-la. For 6 oysters, it's about 2800 php. And it was salty lol. And you need a haircut 💇‍♂️ lol ✌👍

    On point Savvy!
My nephew is married to a western raised woman. She disrespects my sister, and even at one point disrespected my mother. Now, she wonders why we do not want anything to do with her. I knew she was trouble from the get go, when I discerned that she was the one in control of the relationship with my nephew.
Even though I grew up in the western world, I was old enough to have had the Filipino culture ingrained in me to understand that respect to elders is paramount above all things, when it comes to the nucleus of the Filipino family.
I have also instilled respect for the elders in my kids. I will get on them the moment I saw them disrespect their mother, even at the slightest. My wife and I have also told our son that it is better for him to look for a Filipina in the Philippines once he is ready to settle down.
Extreme feminism has taken hold and ruined most western women's way of thinking. Then the women do not understand why no man wants them when they hit that wall and are still single in their 30s.

Thanks for your reply. Also, our culture in the past had not prepare us for future interaction the right way. For example: Meaning how to identify who is for us or against us, thus, learning the hard way who to trust.
We try to impress others to make long term relationships with our gifts, talents, service. Lastly, stop calling everyone sir, ma’am only because they are a foreigner like they are royalty. Too much TV. Fake Happiness. When stationed overseas, I noticed a pilipina who worked in a local school who became best friends with her friend who was married to a American GI. She kept calling the friends husband sir when they all hanged out on the weekend. He had to reminded her “don’t call me that, we are family”(she never called me sir because I was PhilAM (he was other). Because of her upbringing being exposed to many things to include culture from past generations, T.V. education, etc…(don’t get me started), she trained herself to place people above herself; creating insecurities. That’s all for now.
      Remember:
Learn from the Past, Learn to make it better for future generations. Teach our culture the right way. Don’t always have to teach bad words or expose Subicbay, Clark Airbase. Shalom

@@geraldfirme1213 well said! I notice it as well when I go on vacation in the Philippines. My relatives become all googlie-eyed and seem to break their character when they are around foreigners. They lower themselves to the point that I have to pull them aside and ask them what the hell they are doing. I tell them, "Stop treating these foreigners as if you are their servants." I tell them just show them the culture of Filipino hospitality without the need to kiss their asses.
You are correct, they (my relatives in the PI) will always call them sir or ma'am. I tell them to stop that and just call them by their first name. It isn't a disrespect to the foreigners when they are called by their first names, it is what they are familiar with and used to.

I agree with your points. I won over my Filipino relatives by treating them with respect and being interested in their culture. My spouse’s mama loves to cook for me. She always tells me, “you are a big man and you should eat more!”. Haha… of course I love their food and am more than happy to eat my share. I love to tease and joke around with our nieces and nephews. They all seem to enjoy spending time with their Tito Roger. I love their smiling happy souls and they look into my eyes and know I am real. Because I am in a same-sex relationship, I was very worried going there to meet them. I proposed to the person I loved and had waited for 11 years until we could be legally wed here in the US while surrounded by his family on the front porch of his house. They were all accepting of us and welcomed me into their family with open arms and hearts. I can’t wait until we return to the Philippines again and eventually retire there.

This is my reply to your episode: Ten reasons why expats leave the Philippines. This is my opinion about your thoughts savvy. After reading all the exchanges of replies you and readers of comments on display (because replies needed click first to show up). You live in the Philippines and you enjoyed it in some degree..however, of course there must be some negatives anywhere in the world including the Philippines. But would you take responsibily ...to appease/minimize the many extreme negative thought about this country they are trying to imply generally? Because you are the one they ask!! ...Not all the Filipinos are expecting/waiting all the time for a 'hand out' from any foreigner their family member/relative involved with, you can oftenly see relatives feed by their foreign partners but mostly only on special occations/celebrations. More often they're just having curiousity & wanting to be friend to you. Many of us are farmers, fishers, sellers, drivers, mechanics, artist/painters, carpenters, decorators, beautician, technicians, musicians etc. Of course there are some lazy individuals everywhere, you even have machines even on simple dishwashings.. there are some do always thought of money in their minds, gamblers, drunkards, addicted to dangerous drugs, psychopaths, Godless..Now tell us, where in the world not having some individuals like these? America? Nope. You are the one to correct them because you started all these..but instead, you allow them to mock Filipinos and adds futher points in agreement to their saying. Be true to your conscience and experience! Do you really a witness or actually witnessing, that generally as I read all your exchanges of thoughts.. Filipinos are robbers/ lazy?.. if you are unsure, Say it to them. I know you are still young but you started this. You even suggested go ahead signal to a query to take Filipina fiance/wife just to spare them the hassles of life here in Ph.. that's Ridiculous. You victimized us with Asian hate crimes in your country not to mention other difficulties.. still you'll pursue us in our own land? And still we treat you right and respect you. Of course we know Government has issues of corruption and mismanagements! And that sincere/voluntary/unconditional love/help to needy.. that is the thing what we welcome from anyone, thank you. God may bless us all.

One ways its easier to be kind here is because people here are respectful. Its easier to be good when your surrounded by good people. So to the grumpy foreign people who likes to huff and puff on strangers like Karens… you will just end up packing your bags if you cant change. So fillipino culture is same as Latin just with an Asian twist?
At least from what I get from
    Tita=tia(in spanish) tito=tio(in spanish)
To if you impress the family you more likely get the girl
    To family oriented
    To the food
My hypothesis is that the more you are around latin culture, the more you probably get used to their culture.

Thanks for your videos I enjoy them...Oh and how about if you're talking to someone you don't know like a security guard what respect word do you call them. Nanay, inay* ("e-nay")- mother
      Tatay, itay* - father
"Inay" and "itay" are kind of deeper words. You pronounce the -ay part like in the word "aye".
But someone here in the comments section made good point about using "tito" and "tita" before you get engaged. You can ask your girlfriend which one she finds to be more suitable where you won't be seen as being too chummy ("feeling close" in Filipino).

Let me answer that for you. Start by saying Tito/Tita for Uncle/Auntie since you are not formally engaged yet. Then when properly engaged and/or married, call them Tatay/Nanay (or Dad/Mom).Those slightly older than you can be called Kuya/Ate even if you're not related.

Most problems if not so big to deal with …are tolerated. Its difficult to disrespect elders. In most cases you just have to develop patience. Or say it in a manner that is not embarrassing anybody or else you will get hated on and feared. People will steer clear of you. You will not get the full potential of filipino living. Bec that is the way people are here. Even my mom. You cant get direct answer because as she said “its embarassing to tell people what you really like” we often relegate to the background putting forth other peoples feelings and needs ahead of our own. Because we can always think of our own in our own time and our me time…But in dealing with people always think about others first before urself. That makes the filipino different from the rest of the world. As you can see from the hospitality. Just dont embarass anyone or else you will be alone dealing with your own stuff without anybody willing to help…

So Filipinos are good people basically what you're saying, except the 25% a father's that Runaway. I find Filipinos to be like everyplace else good bad and in the middle. As you can imagine if anyone ever came to America and started bad-mouthing it they'd have a lot of problem. This street food there we'll make an American sick to their stomach and the Filipinos have food that definitely should not be eaten by Americans right off the bat. So good list but there's a big chunk of those men that run away from their families and that's not good people. I also wouldn't suggest running out and trying everything Filipinos eat good way to rip your stomach to shreds. Just my observations as somebody who's been over there half a dozen times or more and have a Filipina wife. And what they like even more than respect, is if you give him money.

    • @rap3208
      @rap3208 2 роки тому

have you really trued those food you are criticizing? Americans when they butcher an animal, they just get the good meat and throw away all the rest. filipinos consider that as a waste (a sin against the animal really) and use/eat all parts of the animals and there are a lot of food making use of the offal, head, toe, etc. - nothing goes to waste. Americans see this and just turn away in disgust.
Generally, american food is dry and tasteless. American food really is just slab of meat, beans, soggy vegetables, salad, very sweet cakes, hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza, etc. That is all what americans eat as they don't generally cook. The good food is really foreign cuisine.

    1. Be white
    2. Have money
    3. Don't get upset if you notice they are taking advantage of you. Just let them and never confront them about it.
