Wow, to think that almost a decade later that bit of continuity was remembered.
I’m assuming that he planned out the story but since animation takes a while it was kind of a wait

Actually more like half a decade.
Caterpie is one of the most interesting concepts for a villain(?) that I've seen probably ever. Despite being a generic weak enemy, his determination alone is what makes him a threat. In a world where the hero(?) is willing to throw away any sort of morals just to win at any cost, it makes sense that the villain would do the same. While his immediate goal is revenge, his long term goal seems to be dignity- the assurance that his people will be treated with respect and no longer be seen as weaklings. The "big villain is just a weak enemy with a chip on their shoulder" trope is shockingly uncommon, and so it feels not only original, but also super well done, especially in the context of the pokemon world.

Ever notice how bulbasaur likes to adorn himself with severed body parts (caterpie head and butterfree wings) and thinks that wearing a severed tail is "neat"? I think bulbasaur really is a psychopath. A very very innocent one

Honestly I was expecting the Missing No. to save Charmander or something since Charmander's the one who birthed it into their reality and visited him in the tower. That or Mewtwo who told Charmander to meet him in Cerulean Cave. But they really killed him off... It's very anti-climatic to me and even more so since the Caterpie who's responsible just walks away and its apparently been many years since then...
Alternate Reality: Squirtle doesn’t arrive on time to save Charmander and Bulbasaur, so Charmander is killed and Bulbasaur is of course the food for the Caterpie. The only thing is that Squirtle doesn’t get captured by Caterpie, and neither does Whiskers because the leader only catches a Nidoran to kill Charmander, but since he is dead he no longer needed to catch him. Without help in battle from those two pokemon, the leader eventually dies against a bird Pokémon along with some of the other Caterpie. Squirtle just lingers in the wild eating berries and hiding from predators until he eventually gets captured by a trainer.
That’s an even worse ending

But Dirtle states that the same thing keeps happening to pigeoto (getting poisoned by the nidoran) so the war still would’ve happened, but who knows if he would’ve caught the squirtle
@Guillermo Melendez The only thing is that mainly applies to Pidgeotto I think. Pidgeotto didn’t seem to care about the Caterpie training a Nidoran to poison him unlike the other birds/Charmander, but idk, you’re probably right.

Everybody knows that Bulbasaur will be leader at the end.
Mainly because Ivysaur evolves into Venusaur at lvl 32, whilst the others evolve at lvl 36, thus meaning the others will be vulnerable for 4 more levels to come.

Not quite. Ass kicking = authority. I don't think he'd be able to beat Charmander even as an Ivysaur, considering how much of a wuss he is. Not to mention, Charmander is getting kills and therefore exp at a faster rate than the other two, let's not forget about that.
Lemonti Lemon I'm a fanboy simply because I use reason to back why I think Bulbasaur will not surpass Charmander in power or leadership? No. The equation Ass Kicking = Authority is a strong element in this series. In the unlikely event that Bulbasaur does evolve before Charmander, It is even more unlikely that he will best Charmander in combat, due to his apparent pacifistic nature, and due to Charmander's pragmatic, brawler-esque fighting style. And the fact that, as previously stated, will be around the same level (implied when it was said "they will need protection for four more levels"), not to mention the type disadvantage, which weighs heavy against a more skilled opponent. So as implied before; unless Bulbasaur goes on a huge ass-kickin' spree, he hasn't a hope in hell of evolving before Charmander. He also couldn't become the leader because as established, Charmander is their trainer. Now I assumed a lot when making this comment but tha

1) Interesting how the first thing he does when he's free is put on the caterpie helmet.
2) He evidently lacks true empathy, as he even finds the caterpies' dismemberment of Charmander fascinating.
3) He wears Butterfree wings as an accessory.
Compare his behavior to Squirtle, who sees eating other Pokemon as cannibalism, and the equivalence to humans would be wearing other peoples' body parts/skin as accessories/clothing.

SpongicX I actually tried it with blood in earlier episodes, and it didn't work it all. It clashed with the visuals. I like to keep it dark and soul crushing, but still accessible to a younger audience.
