Although stripped of his title by FIDE for holding his 1993 match with Short outside the world chess body's auspices, Kasparov was nevertheless widely considered the legitimate World Champion. The Professional Chess Association (PCA) created by Kasparov held a series of a series of candidate matches to choose an opponent for him. Viswanathan Anand succeeded in becoming the champion's opponent.
Anand's rise in the chess world was meteoric. Born in India, he quickly emerged as his nation's greatest player. At age fifteen, he became the youngest Indian to win the International Master title. At the age of sixteen he was crowned India's National Champion. In 1987 he was the first Indian to win the World Junior Championship. In 1988, at the age of eighteen, he became the first official Grandmaster of India. Anand qualified for the PCA World Championship final by winning the candidates matches against Michael Adams and Gata Kamsky.

After Anand winning the world championship tournament against Kramanik a felicitation ceremony was organized in Chennai, India. I was still a teenager. I was lucky to meet the world champion on that day. Truly a special legend. I asked him who he considers as his favorite chess player of all times "Fischer, Kasparov or himself". Anand said "its really tough question(smiles) but he said 'Of course, R.J. Fischer.'. Then I asked him if he met Fischer in person. He said with a bit of hesitation that he did and it's one of the greatest memory. Then asked if he played a game with him and who won if so. Outside of Viktor Korchnoi (who was rated 2680 and ranked 17 when he was 68!!) no one in the last 40 something years has had the longevity of Anand. What is even more remarkable is that he outlasted and outperformed his contemporaries who were often nearly a decade younger than him (Kramnik, Topalov, Leko, Polgar, Morozevich, Grishchuk, Kamsky etc etc.)

Even at fifty, he is still an elite player, and only a little weaker than during his absolute prime. Longevity as a player is what the most talented have in common. Smyslov was another great example. Lasker comes to mind too.

I remember following this match as a kid in 1995, playing the moves on my board from the notations published in the newspaper. Kasparov was supposed to win this championship, but after 8 draws and Anand scoring the first win in the 9th game, we were sort of hopeful at that time. But Kasparov pulled ahead from the next game onwards to win the title comfortably.
Anand used to give interviews in Tamil to TV stations, where he would mention this one anecdote... While travelling in a train in Tamil Nadu (coming back from a tournament), Anand was seated near an elderly gentleman who was having small talk with him. Anand was around 25, and as usual, the question was, "What do you do?" To which Anand replied that he plays Chess. That gentleman (uncle) seemed to have got almost annoyed and asked, "I am asking you what you do for a living!". Anand said he plays Chess for a living, and that uncle was very concerned and asked if there was any money in it. This was the sad state of affairs in India at that time when no sport or game except Cricket was given any importance. Anand was primarily instrumental in professional Chess being taken seriously in India. A true great.

@@stopwritingthatreplyjohnat6638 that's not true.. What is true, is that he was in Philippines for a year and they had a TV show where at the end of it, a puzzle was shown and people were invited to send replies and the selected winner woild get a chess book.. Vishy and his mum solved it on a daily basis and by sheer logic of probability he won a hell lot of books.. For others to win, Anand was invited to their library, and was asked to take how many ever books he wanted, on the single promise that he never sent responses again😂
