Sex & Gender: An Evolutionary Perspective - Heather Heying

- Heather Heying is an evolutionary biologist, professor, author and podcastor. With her husband, Bret Weinstein, she authored the New York Time's Best Selling book, "A Hunter-Gatherer’s Guide to the 21st Century", which provides an evolutionary toolkit for living a good and honorable life as an ape in the 21st century. This animation is an adaptation from one of the chapters in that book.
For 15 years, Heather was a professor at The Evergreen State College, where she provided undergraduates a curriculum that prioritized the scientific method, and pushed students outside of their own certainty and comfort zones, in part through exploring remote sites in the neotropics.
That ended in 2017 when she and her husband, Bret Weinstein resigned in the wake of violent protests on campus. Since then they has been educating outside of the classroom, in invited talks, in written work, and especially, in their weekly livestreamed episodes of the DarkHorse podcast.

Is the universe male or female? I thought we were all one? I think the universe can choose to be whatever the hell it likes... Bloody humans who think they know it all. In my eyes all gender norms are generalisations/stereotypes put upon us from birth
Nobody is confused about the difference. It's just that up until about 5 minutes ago, they meant the same thing. For about 99.5% of humans in the world, it still does.
Facts
You’ll get over it. Just stop pretending like you don’t know they’re different.
or to be more specific not the exact same thing. gender is about conveying three pieces of information in one word. the species, age and sex of a living being. Humans can be men/boys or women/girls depending on their age.
So when you say "thats a woman", you are conveying that they are human, they have gone through puberty, or are 18, and are female. But if they are say ten years old, youd call them a girl. The gender state is based on the sex of the person. They are undeniably connected, but not quite identical. if they were identical then one of them would be a worthless words. All words need to have a unique purpose and definition that doesnt contradict any other possible definitions.
Gender has always been about conveying what sex someone is.

Just like everything in life. Are you gonna be stuck being a dinosaur just cus it's been that way for the longest time? Literal caveman arguments in the comment section
The sentiment of "we can't go back and we can't stay here" is such a good one
Interesting to see how many biologists and scientists completely changed their paradigm overnight (relatively speaking) for fear of criticism and mob bullying
A biology teacher was fired not too long ago for teaching biology.
It is all about securing funding and making sure not to get fired by submitting to the new dogma.
The inquisition is back.
the HOMOSEXUAL moviment is full of hate and persecution
they persecuted many scientists in the 1960 in order to desclassify homossexuality as a disease
Hi, what are your qualifications to say that recent biological research is the result of mob bullying and not a revised scientific understanding? Do you have a PhD in a relevant field? If so, have you conducted a meta-analysis on recently published papers or conducted your own study?
@trinodot8112 oh look scientific gatekeeping, never seen that before. Next you're going to tell me that the only people who can qualify what a woman is are scientists right 😂

Can’t help but feel that five years ago this video would’ve been less than five minutes long.
So true LOL. Wouldn't even need the video.
42 minuts explaining sex and gender rofl.
Cant make that shit up.
There’s far more confusion and perversion of the mind today…
@@MrDakold We could've been exploring space on giant spaceships. Instead, we have to deal with insane people who can't even accept reality.
that’s the whole point - to get you confused and make you think about irrelevant stuff
Wow! This video really packed it allll in, in such a beautiful and respectful way. Men & women are at their BEST when we can work together and bring balance. I hope this episode spreads to as many people as possible and helps open the eyes of so many lost souls out there. Thank you After Skool!!!
Fantastic program from two truly dedicated scientists who are a joy to listen to, watch or read! This program is particularly timely, with Western society in the grip of a politically motivated, dangerous contagion that leaves an indelible impact on those subjected to both the contagion and its so called treatment. I’ve been a psychiatrist for nearly 40yrs. I know well the subject of “transgenderism”. Brett & Heather do likewise and are worth your time and respect.
No. this video was a woman's perspective on sexuality. it was a rant more or less. not misandrist but still one sided. she fails to understand many parts of male psycho-sexuality.
WOW .... thx for explaining things that made sense for thousands of years.
It made more sense to keep women as property. Give them rights was a HUGE mistake. They are fickle and vicious when they dont get what they want. This is the bible portrayed them as EVIL.
Unfortunately, some have become confused, to put it lightly. Having a million genders is being pushed by the school system, and even the government.
You mean, if you could cheat the numbers to make it seem like more people liked it, you would? Reminds me of a certain election we had recently... 🤔
Didn’t you know in the past 5 years, all objective truths, laws, and facts suddenly became subjective?
@@magnetotwister Well the car that hit me yesterday disagree with ya. 🤣🤣🤣
One of the primary aspects of property rights needs to be understood as individuals are never and in no way property of other individuals or groups.
That was an excellent narrative Heather, look forward to reading your book. I learned plenty in that little bit of time.
It's a great book
I guess it's a sign of progress that you have to write a book to explain what was obvious to every adult 20 years ago.
We will have decades of this type of debunking of absurdity.
Or eternally, so long as absurdity is sponsored by our institutions of higher education.
Every? Did you live in a cave?
@@imaloserdude7227 Well I can only speak for Britain. What about you?
Yep totally, and a sign of progress to go back to windmills and coal to produce our energy. Definitively not reverting back 🤣🤣🤣
Was gonna say, learned this in elementary school.
Haven't finished it yet, I'm hoping there's at least a mention of the amount of endocrine disruptors in our food, water, air. This shouldn't be a partisan issue, all our kids are exposed. It's harder & harder to control social medias influence. Heather has an academics view that few could argue with.
Edit: she addressed it towards the end.
Adult choices are different than modifying a childs life forever. Again, shouldn't be a partisan issue.
It's shortly mentioned near the end.
Collectively we should have the ability to gain a better control of what is in our food, water, and air. It’s discouraging that once again “forever chemicals” in our water supply is in the spotlight and everyone is acting like it is breaking news.
It is unfortunate future hominins aren't here now to illume the hit to our fossil record from growth hormones, endocrine disruptors, excitotoxins, and chemical additives in the global food chain.
The right would have to admit that unregulated capitalism can result in a polluted food supply and the left would have to admit that gender dysphoria is un natural.
We don't talk about endocrine disrupting chemicals.
40:55 is one of the most important points of the whole video IMO. Maybe if we could figure that one out, feminists wouldn't be pushing ALL women into roles they personally may not desire. We must do more to honor the role of raising the next generation than we do currently. Money cannot be the measure of your life. This MUST be done as an entire culture, NOT just dumping it on an individual to somehow feel honored and appreciated by themselves.
Feminists would not stop until we have a matriarchy where men are basically treated as slaves. That's the version of equality that they are going for in actuality.
Feminist activists have made some mistakes with focusing attention on getting women into the workplace, but it’s capitalism that really wants them there. More of the population in the workplace, more productivity, more growth. There’s no way women would have been let in, if it didn’t suit that agenda.
we can mainly do this by lowering the cost of living.
people have more kids when they have more disposable income. all of these politicians talking about a demographic problem never once push to lower the cost of living.
@@AustinKoleCarlisle Break up these massive peudo-monopolies. Encourage them to compete with one another so they are cutting profits in order to sell you their products and services. Housing is another issue, though. I'm not familiar enough with how that works to give a good solution.
@@bettybray5366 Capitalism isn't an entity with an "agenda". It's just free trade. You're thinking of "Cronyism" or "Crony Capitalism". It really is sad to see when two very distinct things get conflated, especially when one is corrupted beyond belief and the other is about as fundamental as free speech. Listen to or read some Thomas Sowell and/or Milton Friedman to get a good primer on this stuff, they do great work and actually understand economics to a practical degree, or in other words, they're economically literate unlike a lot of people out there who will make an effort to try to convince you that they are with smoke and mirrors.
This was great. It was not the standard trans debate talking points. Super nuisanced and respectful but honest. We need more of this in society!
I'm a tom boy and I hate being treated like a woman, I tolerate it though. Still I am proud to be a woman, when I was a kid I hated being a girl. Nothing but barbies and dresses, just not lady like to get dirty or climb trees, never stopped me though. Still I know that despite the fact that I am very strong for a woman I quickly realized that my younger brothers easily overpowered me in play fights once they hit puberty. I usually win play fights against my husband as he is gentle and I'm so wriggly. I know for certain that if I ever had a full blown fist fight with my husband, he might get a black eye or a broken nose and I would likely have a fractured skull or perhaps a broken neck.

I am a tomboy as well and it was the societal pressure that annoyed me when I was little.
It took me a while to develop into womanhood natually, but I would be scared to walk the tomboy path today.
You and I would probably be told we were little boys instead of masculine girls and be pressured to go on hormones or get surgeries. 😬
@@dustyoldhat nope just a dummy :)
Thank you for tackling this issue so sincerely with rationale, walking through the whole logic and common misconceptions and fallacies. Truth will prevail
This is a well written video about gender & sex overall, but still biased to side conservative or "traditionalist" as you will.
Eeyup
Cause it only describes gender as "act" (while acknowledging that it's fluid).
This animation basically says "gender roles are dumb, it's okay to be a feminine man and a masculine woman, but men will never women and women will never be men, cause what are is what sex we got, and not respecting that destroys our society."
This video speaks TERFism to me.
With no real struggle in their lives people tend to make up some😂
I think this is true too though. Like raising/lowering the bar. Here in the first world countries we complain about say no iPad or AC, then in Africa it’s like no house or no food. And maybe the rich kids are like no Bentley no yacht. I guess when we have no problems we look for them/ we’re so used to “highs“ that mediums start to feel like lows. It’s adaptation can’t really help it I guess
Yup this is how people of other countries look at this mess, a problem that First world dwellers created because they don't have any problems to deal with. Why is it that this issue is found mostly in US and Western European countries?
Imagine being praised, for speaking common sense.
I always wonder...how does somebody who's trans know what it feels like to be the opposite sex? They can't possibly have any idea what that experience is like.
They don't. Only .0001% suffers from a powerful mental illness. The rest of them are faking it for attention and internet brownie points.
Yea, they can only observe, and then they copy whatever they see and feel, but they only get a part of the data.
Riddle me this, if genitals/ sex organs have nothing to do with gender, then why does removing them or whatever affirm gender?
Yes they can't. The only good reason to become a trans is when the satisfaction to live your fantasy in your brain is strong enough to forget the physical reality. That's why so many trans suffer so much: they have been mutilated and can't have only psychic pleasure, and feel their body give them so much less than expected and than before surgery and hormones.
There has been more than one instance of dysmorphia in my lifetime. We were shown women that were hyper feminine in magazines. Young girls turned to eating disorders. We were shown American gladiators, and professional wrestlers. Hyper masculine men.. Young Boys turned to steroids. It's not a feeling of what we are. It's a feeling of what we aren't.
This video is perfect for the times. I like your discernment of good vs bad information. Excellent job.
That was really good! Loved all this information. Thank you!
Heather!
I have so much respect for you. thank you for being a woman to look up to
Her reasoning is partially flawed. She does not truly understand male psycho-sexuality.

Interesting that Nicaragua is the first example. The USA's role in 20th century Nicaraguan history was utterly appalling. No compensation, or apology, has ever been given.
Great speaker, great lecture. Thank you Heather.
An incredibly balanced, compassionate and honest conversation that must be had. Thank you!
I want to buy the book. Great scientific process breakdown & explanations
I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I already purchased a hardcopy of the book but it just moved up on my reading list. However, I may need the Kindle or Audible version as most of my reading is on my commute and it's a big hardcover!
Can we make this required curriculum in schools please?
not really. the perspective is quite biased. it is still based on evolutionary perspective not social one. it brushes over the social development and variances across the globe often contradicting its argument to emphasise facts that we already know.
"if rhonda is 196cm she is taller then most men, but that doesn't mean that women are generally shorter than man and that is what feminists, queers and academics have to realise"
feminists, queers and academics have long tradition of telling rhonda that she is not less of a woman or a person because she is out of norm. sex positive activism also implyies that rhonda has a right to her sex life indenpendantly of ovulation, gastation, breast feeding cycles and reproduction. maybe there was truth to all the teasing in school and the tall rhonda actually feels like a man.
i think if that is the truth he really needs our support, he has right to sex life and life without violence.
i hate this flipping of the script (like this video) that is trying to imply that 'common sense' is under the attack. dear normie people just becuse we (the others) are trying to create a safe environment where we can find happines doesnt mean that your 'way of life' is threatened. it is a ridiculous and paranoid notion. only way forward is building future together

I'm an old-school transsexual with so many natural feminine sex characteristics that I might as well be borderline intersex, even if not with a diagnoseable condition. Perhaps I am one of the early victims of atrazine and other endocrine disruptors, or perhaps it's something genetic. Either way, I ask for understanding. Shouting "mental illness" at me doesn't change the reality of my situation. I am not delusional, but dysphoric. I'm fully in touch with reality, the problem is the reality is uncomfortable.
My brain clearly has a female-like structure, and that's the most relevant to who I am as a person. I often passed by accident even before transitioning. I don't want to pressure anyone else into transition, and it disgusts me that this is happening to children. All I want is to be me, and to help solve the mystery of this condition so nobody else has to suffer like I have.
Who gives a shit about that
I don't think most people have a problem with what you're saying. I had a friend who was old-school trans and she agreed there's a big difference between what is happening now and normal transsexual individuals. Try to ignore the loud minority and know that most people don't seem to care what others call themselves. Peace and love.
NO ONE is forcing it on kids.
@@yashaouchan In case you're being pedantic about the word "force", let me clarify:
While genuinely trans people may recognize their identity at a very young age, the vast majority of children lack sufficient analytical and decision-making skills. They are easily swayed by social pressures.
The school and medical systems are actively grooming and pressuring many children into transitioning, who would otherwise grow out of the confusion. Subsequently, those individuals go into adulthood with regrets that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. They are allowed to undergo irreversible surgeries before they're old enough to consent.
What might help a whole lot is for us to understand that there are many different dimensions of relationship/personality in our human bodies. Only one of those dimensions is whether we produce eggs or sperm (or neither, or maybe even both). All the other dimensions are separate, including what we look like, what we like to do, what we feel like inside, and so on. There's nothing mentally ill about being a male (sperm maker) who is naturally curvy, or has natural empathy and is emotionally open, or tries to follow their group's rules (rather than trying to change those rules), or goes with the flow easily, which are all "feminine" traits traditionally, but aren't genetically directly attached to biological female procreation functions.
The real problem is that we've taught ourselves to think that there's only one dimension of relationship/procreation, when there are many different levels where two complementary polarities are needed for effective co-creation - biological, physical, emotional, intellectual, philosophical, etc., and all levels are independent, at least to some extent, in our genes.
I would feel 100% comfortable with this woman teaching this subject in any elementary school (appropriately adapted to their respective levels of maturity).
Of course you would, it's biased towards your opinion. You're ok with teachers indoctrinating kids about STRAIGHT sex and gender norms and that anything else is mental illness. That doesn't sound like you WANT them to learn and make their own decisions, you want to only give them information that YOU agree with, which is LITERALLY WHAT INDOCTRINATION MEANS!
@@toastiesburned9929 Did you watch the video?
This does not to be discussed to 5-10 year olds. Find God.
@@toastiesburned9929 What should children be learning? My opinion is that by the time we graduate from any formative education program we should have knowledge of our bodies equivalent to that of a general practitioner. My opinion is focused less on the sexuality of our species but more so on how are bodies are equipped.
@@toastiesburned9929I love gay people like you who LiTeRAlLY only exist because two straight people had sex.

Sex and gender, or reality and mental illnesses.
Speaking facts
This!!!!
Can’t believe scientists have to be retards all because the scared of the big bad controllers of the world
Gender is mono, it's like magnatism inportant in the laws of attraction but it can be broken in individuals
SEX is Biolgical and dictates reproductive purpouse,
mutations do happen but when they are being encoraged thats a huge issue and the leading cause in mental illness is Belief and enviroment,.
This is SUCH an important video. I've been trying to explain this to some people in my social circle for over a decade, but they always used the fallacy of division to "prove" me wrong. And it always stumped me. To the point that I started accepting and even internalising their wacky mental gymnastics, if only to simply keep the peace.
And that is a TERRIBLE reason to accept an entirely fallacious paradigm. It's akin to tolerating fascism because you're afraid of speaking out and being punished.
I will be showing this to some of my more delusional friends. Thank you.
Since when was teaching a traditionally female field? A significant amount of teaching in the past has been focused on production of goods (trades), philosophy/history/politics (logic, strategy, leadership, etc.), and sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics) of which the concepts relate more to things rather than the social aspects of humanity.
Teaching was overwhelmingly a male dominated field and only recently has it become female dominated (of which I have little knowledge as to why)
The reason why teaching has become female dominated is because of the efforts women made in female liberation (feminism) and because of men no longer to be interested in becoming teachers, but rather pursuing roles they perceive as more interesting (thus giving things they perceive as less interesting to women like they have always done.).
Women have made progress already, but men are still stuck.
Not to bash at Heather, from who I have great respect, but I figured this out around my 30's without a degree in evolutionary biology!
it blown my mind how distorted society must be to don't acknowledge this as reality

Well done. I advise a lot of young kids on dating advice forums and they are so invested in hook-up culture and it's tearing them apart. Men and women are just shredding themselves. They're so unhappy, but they're coming to believe that strategy 3 is normal and all there is. They're giving up hope at finding true connection on a mass scale. I think the rise of violence both external and self-harm is a result of this loss of connection.
