Start of Corn Harvest!! (Close Call with Wagons & Hills)

  • The Start of Corn! Been waiting for this day for awhile. The first field we went to is the field we pattern-tiled last fall. It's looked decent all year and very consistent. Ear size was not as big as hoped but it put out a decent yield! We still have about 50 acres left on that farm to harvest, only did 24 acres!
Also had a close call with 2 wagons on the hills. The tractor went into a bad powerhop and I didn't want to stop until I really had to. I just had too much weight behind the tractor. Luckily, nothing was broke on the tractor, and the wagon tongue just needed a few parts. It was pretty stupid on my end to take that much weight up the hill.

On our farm, we pull one of those brents with a john deere 6210r. It doesn't struggle with it, but we have a lot of hills here. This one time, we had cows in corn stalks, and we were going to chisel it up before planting with like a 10 ft cultivator type thing. I was in the cab and that thing started power hopping so bad one second I was sitting, and the next I was in the air and my head hit the roof. It's always kind of enlightening to see a machine like that struggle so bad.

Congrats! Glad to see you getting a good yield! I will say an 85 year old gentleman I farm with says if you don't have a chopping corn head run your head just below the ears. You will save on head loss and also residue problems. You will (and should) have to chop stocks before running tillage. Just finished harvest tonight! Good luck

No textbook path to follow for success, just hard work and quick clear thinking to keep moving forward to the goal. Your desire to maintain a safe operation will pay huge dividends. Keep up the great job.

Fun fact (kinda): that black dust is caused by a fungus called tar spot, which is common across the corn belt. It can drastically reduce yield if it starts forming early in the year. It’s detectable by looking for black spots on the corn leaves. It can be treated by a heavy fungicide application early on, and/or during tassel. Hope this helps!

like the vids, but kinda questioning after these few years why you are sticking with the two gravity wagons. switching to a older semi with a hopper bottom and a actual grain cart would be more efficient and cause less wear on the 8110

the 1k hopper bottom would be running outside the field at a faster rate with a 1k auger wagon running the field while also giving that 1k buffer between loads@@flyingsfarmsandtrucking7350

To adjust your concave to rotor gap get a metric wrench that fits over your corn cob, whatever size metric wrench fits it set your opening one size bigger and for harvest time load down your tires and get a heavy hitch weight bracket for your three-point hitch. That tractor is not quite heavy enough.

Hi everyone. I wonder if I can offer you a few suggestions after the corn harvest.
    - Buy a second-hand corn stalk shredder.
    - You have baling equipment. You can bale and sell the excess corn stalks in your field.💰💰💰💰
    - Plow your field in autumn. (disk ripper or vertical tillage)
    See you in spring.🧿👍
