Chris, great instruction and very easy to learn! Your teaching method is clear and precise. I've been playing and finger picking guitar for over 40 years and thought I needed a new challenge, so I began learning traditional bluegrass banjo about three months ago. I've been learning this song (and about a dozen others) through my traditional bluegrass instructor who is older than me. He's a wonderful and well-known banjo player, but the way he teaches Boil the Cabbages Down, the song is stuffed full of hammers, slides and pull offs. It just never sounded a whole lot like the traditional version I'd heard so many bands play. So I took a listen to your video and realized that was how I wanted to play this song. Thanks to your great instruction, I was playing the song smoothly with just a couple hours practice. Such fun, Thanks. I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
Thank you for your comments. I have taught possibly hundreds of individual lessons. I have repeated the lessons over and over and I have found the most direct ways of getting people to play musical sounds on a banjo. Your comment made my day. Feel free to contact me directly if you wish.
Fantastic, Chris. This was the FIRST song I ever learned on the banjo, back in 1992, and it was taught to me by my FIRST banjo teacher in Toronto, a guy named Chris Quinn. He must have been desperate for students at the time. There have been many teachers since then, buy Boil Them Cabbage Down is always the warm up tune I play when I pick the banjo off the wall and get ready to play. Thanks for the solid Foundation!
I know this is an old video but i subbed. My Dad played about every string instrument there is but the banjo was his favorite. Sadly he passed away 4 years ago. Now ive been trying to learn to play the banjo & this is really the only song i really want to learn bc it brings back so many good memories. I loved hearing my Dad play this, especially when i was a young kid. Id ask him to play it all the time. He started trying to teach me but we didnt have enough time. I pray i can learn it. Id be so happy😊 i know hed be smiling down, so proud of me.
I hope that you have been able to learn how to play boil the cabbage down. If your dad played, maybe some of that rubbed off. If you’d ever like to book a lesson with me, feel free to reach out. No pressure. Just for your information.
That's folk music for you. You are quite right. This song can be played many different ways. This is just one way. You can use other picking patterns that fit a measure of 8th notes.
Actually it starts with 3251 and I slide from fret to to fret 3 would like me to give you a lesson I would be more than happy but that is not hardly how we play bile them cabbage down in Tennessee
Actually, you and I are both correct about the start because we are both emphasizing the B note. Your B comes from your slide up the 3rd string, bending it up a little at the 3rd fret as you pick into the B on the second string; mine just comes from playing the open second string without a slide. You said B and I said B. The reason I teach this song this way is so people can practice the Foggy Mountain Breakdown pattern (2121 5215) without having to fit the quick 2-3 hammer-on that occurs in the first half of the measure over the (2121). This is just one way to play Boil the Cabbage Down; of course it can be played the way you play it, but thanks for pointing out options. I would appreciate seeing your lesson on this tune. Thanks.

I’ve been playing for 14 years, but love this video all the same. Great teaching style 👍

Great lesson. Thanks. Dave.
Thank you. Very well explained
Nice lesson, Chris! Makes me wish I played the banjo! (Though I guess this would be a good way to start...)
Excellent
Love it!
How many different ways can one play this song? This is the 3rd different way.
