I went to see them last night in Liverpool. Fantastic when you are there. I’m so glad I went. I did not want to see Phil this way. The best band ever for me. I hope Phil has a long nice retirement after this tour and we can remember the memories this special band gave us. God bless Genesis.
Calling perfectly legitimate criticism 'hate' is infantile. Genesis has been my favourite band since I first heard them in 1976, and Phil is my favourite drummer, and I personally thought they got better after Peter Gabriel left. I bought and loved all of their albums, and all of Phil's, and I was never one of those who considered that he caused the band to 'sell out' - they just progressed in a direction some didn't like. I appreciated his solo music nearly as much as that of Genesis itself. But this performance just sounds wrong! It's in the wrong key, the instrumental balance is bad compared to earlier live versions, the drumming is pedestrian, and I cringe hearing how awful Phil's singing is. It's tremendously sad that it had to end like this. They should, in my opinion, have called it a day in 2007, when it was still working at 90%, and the irreplaceable Chester Thompson was doing what he always did - providing the backbone of Genesis live. The 'fake fans', if there are any, are those making excuses for this travesty that in no way does justice to how great the band was.
@@inglepropnoosegarm7801 I agree with you about Phil. I’m a super Phil and Genesis fan and have been since 1980. I love Genesis, but Phil is a shell of his 2007 person and it’s shocking how he has deteriorated. I admire his desire to perform, but he can’t do it anymore. It’s painful to hear and watch. It borders on elder abuse. Duchess is my favorite song and it’s butchered here. I wish Phil would have stepped out of the light years ago and enjoyed retirement. I love the pre 2007 Phil. It’s not hating on him because I love him, but this is not the way the band should go out. They were the best band ever and I feel this hurts their legacy.
It makes me feel very old to see those mates in the band Genesis, what's left of him the 1st time I saw him in 1972 was selling England by the pound tour which featured, Tony bank's, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett , Phil Collins, and of course Peter Gabriel. After seeing that concert they put a different spin on prog music . The next time I saw him was 1974 the lamb lies down on Broadway tour which was absolutely phenomenal a 2 and a 1/2 hours show with incredible visual effects for back in that day. I followed the band throughout the years up until 1984 And then I stopped going to shows. I am growing old with them because I'm the same age, They're all incredibly talented Hope this last tour is memorable for people that haven't followed them as long as I have to me there will always be The Best prog band ever. After this final tour is over I certainly hope Phil takes care of himself and maybe starts to feel a little better you a I give him a lot of credit to go out there and perform. If you're going to the show somewhere in the world I hope it's very good for you enjoy it..
I think it's awesome that Phil will get out there and fill his Depends in front of 20,000 people. They way he sits in the mess of tea, crumpets, prunes, fish and chips, is amazing. The smell must be horrible, but the band mates don't get close to him through out the whole show.
It's really great to read all these memories. Thank you fans, all. If the guy that wore the amazing Foxtrot embroidered denim jacket in 1980 (Liverpool) is out there. Thank you. Say it's Alright Phil!
I miss the little stories Phil would tell between the songs, seeing him on his feet doing his tamborine performance on "I know what I like", taking the drum throne on long instrumentals, looking vibrant and strong. I appreciate their last offering to their fans, but it saddens me to see him like this. Bless his heart.
thank you for capturing and sharing this .. I just saw them three times in NY .. and I am BLOWN AWAY by Nic Collins .. on this number in particular .. WOW, talk about like Father like Son!! I'm so glad they went on tour again allowing me to see my absolute favorite band in person!!
You could probably see Steve Hackett three or four times for the same price and his band is phenomenal. However, having watched several of these Brummie clips, I have to say that Nic Collins kicks ass and really won me over. Whatever he does next, I'll be listening.
Seen them Friday night in Manchester, took my two young daughters, they were amazed how brilliant they are, although Nic seemed very popular with them. Great video
This was probably my favourite performance from the Liverpool show. Its an awesome song anyway but the imagery is beautiful, the band sound so big. I was so excited when I heard that loop start
Would love to see a whole show shot just like this. Would be great to sit in the lounge room with a few beverages and soak that in. Some of the hand held shaky footage gives me vertigo. Thanks.
As a fan from the start..Genesis music is original and special...a miracle they are giving it a last go round..mostly due to the abilities of Phil's son Nic..its a family affair..Phil would not be doing this otherwise *
I think due to to his illness it has affected his voice not just the quality of it but he seems to be struggling to keep in tune...but these guys are legends 👍
It said in their official Last Domino tour book that his voice has essentially been ruined by years of himself and the rest of the band “pushing” him to hit long, loud, high notes. Some of the songs were made an octave lower to accommodate and sometimes he struggled but I still very much enjoyed seeing them live last year :)
@@icatfishedyourdad2767 No doubt. Listen to their shows from the early 80s. Especially from the 1982 Encore Tour. Phil pushed his voice to its absolute limit, particularly while singing Supper’s Ready. I loved it at the time and still do when I listen to their concerts from that era, but in the back of my mind I know he was ruining his voice in the long haul with that singing style.
I kinda like this version better, the bass and air of the song seems heavier and more dramatic. I know his vocals aren't the same as original but honestly if Genesis wrote a new song I would imagine this is what it may sound like.
Despite his adversity I think Phil has found a way, a new way to sing and perform, its a different phil les angelic voice perhaps, more guttural and sweet in a sense.
The voice of Phil today sadly sounds like the mocking old man's voice that Peter Gabriel used to make when singing Musical Box - heck, his face now even resembles the mask that Peter used to wear for the song. That's all very sad. It reminds me of that Ripples' line: "Angels never know their time - to close the book and gracefully decline"...
Not a view shared by the vast majority of the many thousands who went to see them and no doubt those who will see them in the US. The majority who went knew what they would be seeing and wil, have loved the spectacle, plus the ability to say goodbye to these fine musicians. If you’re secure in your opinion, Roger, why are you so preoccupied with those who may simply not agree with you? Aren’t we ALL entitled to our opinions, or is this about something else?
We have the odd situation here that the backing singers are out of tune! When the sound goes over to the left channel, the backing singers get muted, leaving just Phil`s vocals, and he is bang on! Then the mix goes back, and the backing singers throw it all out again!
The only bad thing in the video is the fan singing in the public , the guy is so out of tune it's terrible. But Phil, tho diminished, is still very capable. Shine on, Phil.
Wonderful song and presentation, unfortunately Phil is the weak link on this very expressive song he made so many years ago. Watch the old videos of Phil doing this song.
Its so sad to see Phil like this. Dropping the keys sounds wrong. Im sorry boys time to either get a new singer or retire. Tony and Mike are worth 80 million, Phil over 120 mil...they will be ok.
Phil is struggling with health issues.. Ive been there myself... He has all the money he needs and didn't need to do this tour.. but he did.. for his fans.. whether the music is good or bad it really doesn't matter at this point in our lives. We just love them like family for over 50 years and Im going to see them to show love not negativity or judgement.
I am a long time Genesis fan (since the start) and to be honest, I am finding these clips on UA-cam really difficult to watch. It’s very saddening to see Phil this way and looking at the tour dates, is it really good for him to go on right to December. God forbid this stresses him to much.
@@iancraig Fair point, but it’s really only a few weeks, then another few weeks. I fear if he has no projects to focus on, he will continue to rapidly fade away..
