Thank you for laying out the grain free controversy clearly! I work in pet retail and I can't tell you how often folks come in specifically looking for grain free diets as if they're the end all be all of great pet food...especially when it comes to allergies.
+Mike Via I'm sorry. I get it a lot too being a Vet Tech. I'm always telling people that grain free is not the best but it's not the worst either. The only reason I am a grain free feeder is my Saint Bernard has a very sensitive tummy and breaks out in hot spots like crazy when he eats anything with wheat and soy, and my Chihuahua breaks out in rashes if he gets anything wheat. But it usually a conversation that ends in "I'll just go grab whatever."
i only use ROYAL CANIN Maxi Digestive Care....only food my boxer/rhodesian ridgeback mix will eat. He is 12 years old super healthy and still playful as a puppy
My mother used to feed her basset hound nothing but rice and cooked chicken breasts. Because she'd swear that all dogs should eat is white rice mixed with a cooked meat of the dog's choice. So yeah, the poor guy had stomach issues his whole life and would eat random objects to try and alleviate it. Then would have to get surgery to remove the stuff he'd eat. And now these days, I have a german shepherd and she's a "snacker" with her dog food. But she still eats it regardless with no problems. At least until my mother decides it's unacceptable for a dog to eat like that and will try to feed her rice + greasy hamburger meat and then yells at me when the dog is vomiting and shitting all over the house.
Dr. Roark, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this!!!...This is one of my biggest frustrations as a Technician: trying to explain food/treats/flea prevention to owners of allergic dogs. It's so annoying to see a dog who is doing well on a food, only to have their progress get derailed by good intentions...Unfortunately, *some* people are never going to "get it", no matter how many famous doctors or scientific papers we have to back us up. (And I can already hear the negative comments that you are going to get because this video was sponsored by Rotal Canin . I'm just going to apologize for those folks in advance...*headdesk*)
+Stacy Harvey I feel your pain! I'm a technician in training and I constantly get asked about those topics and find myself feeling like broken record because more often than not people just don't get it. I once had a client tell me that dogs are meant to eat ONLY RAW MEAT.
Thanks you, thank you, thank you...THANKING YOU Immensely for helping to debunk the grain myth! Corn is an innocent bystander. The grain-free thing is pure marketing that preys on pet owners. We recently covered this topic over at our blog VetzInsight - Dr, Andy -I appreciate what you to to educate (and entertain) pet owners. www.vin.com/vetzinsight/default.aspx?pid=756&catId=5860&Id=7120854
So glad to see another episode of #COS. Great video with awesome info. Another point I like to make about grains is to make sure where the grains are coming from. Many are GMO and I like to keep away from those. So not all grains are bad, but it's also important where they come from. :)
The one I always hear is that all dog food is made of horse meat. Yet I always see pork listed at the first ingredient even in high end food. Even when the food is suppose to be chicken stew.
Love to see COS, thanks for the fun info. I wonder if you can do one on food for cats. Since cats are obligate carnivores it would seem that they really don't need much in the way of carbs. However, even "grain free" cat foods have carbs. I don't know which carbs are better than others (if at all...) Any help with this would be really appreciated.
+Cone Of Shame Thank you so much in advance. I really want to do what's best for my girls (short of raw feeding which I know is possible but SO complicated and not feasible for me) LOL "Cats are not small dogs" LOL ya think? LOL Again, thanks for considering this I will look forward to your next COS. :)
"Filler ... I try to avoid it myself. HEY, LET'S WATCH A CAT VIDEO!" Love it.

Wonderful--great information.
Love these videos
+Becky Watts Thank you for saying so. That means a lot.
I love the peanut allergy example. Why? I'm deathly allergic to peanuts.

+Jami JoAnne Russell I see a lot of foods with byproduct meals as the first ingredient.

+Sharon Moseson I think that would be great. You are spot on about there being significant differences. Cats are not small dogs. ;-)
