A bunsen burner/gas blowtorch could also be substituted in place of the laminar flow hood if that is all you have at home. As someone who did some work in an old school bio lab we used to use bunsen burners to create an updraft of air to prevent airborne bacteria from landing on our sterile items. Obviously you need to be careful using this method but it is quite effective
Ive heard of this method before. I've also heard it's not a very effective method of environmental sterilization. Even the particulate matter from the Gas used could contaminate your work. A better option for at home DIY method is using a "still air box".
Via symbiotic relationship with microfungi which provides sugars for growth as well as protection against bacterial infections! Orchids seeds can be very sensitive & as some orchids evolved they developed a back up plan to reproduce via growing little babies at their bases or off of their flower stems, much easier for them then their little seeds all failing because conditions aren't right!
Funny thing though I hated science at high school growing up , I like the hands on stuff theory was to exhausting lol , in my older life I quite enjoy the science of things when you understand the why and what for lol , things at high school just seemed to take forever and I didn’t have the patience then but now I’m even trying mushrooms which is harder than you think with contamination etc , great video .
Can anyone explain to me, If orchids need such sterile conditions to germinate, how do they manage to do it in nature then, where conditions are opposite of sterile? I know they get their food from fungi in nature, but why don't they do the same thing in laboratories to avoid all the hussle with sterilization?
They don't need sterile to germinate. There is thousands if not million seeds in a single pod, literally like talcum powder, they haven't proteins like a normal seed just an embryo, they scatter forever in the wind with the chance one lands in the right spot with the fungi to assist germination. In a flask you can germinate almost 100% of the seed without the need of the fungi, because they take so long and need such a specific media to grow in it has to be sterile as it's also the perfect environment to have bacteria bloom. Which grows super fast and smothers out the orchid seeds which can sometimes take months to germinate.
For anyone trying this at home. Watch some mushroom growing videos! And if you dont have access to laminar flowhoods you could always make a "still air box" using a clear plastic tote from any hardware or basic goods stores world wide. Make 2 holes into 1 side of the tote large enough to fit your arms inside. Clean the area very good and all over. Inside the tote you could also use a spray bottle to mist alcohol inside the the upside-down tote. This will sterilize the air inside the tote. (Make sure you have everything you need inside the tote before finish cleaning everything. Dont introduce unclean items into the tote and if you do you need to repeat the process over.
Just before adding the charcoal, how much liquid was in the beaker? Not all of that 1L stock solution was used, so I'm curious about the charcoal-medium ratio. Cheers
Dry place, not in a place where it will sweat or rot. You've very limited time to use the pod, same as with dry seed. The longer it goes the more chance of bacterial infection where it gets to a point the seed becomes to dirty to clean and use.
@Agriculture Academy, have tried using HiMedia PT074-5L Orchid Maintenance/Replate Medium with CaCl2, Vitamins, Sucrose, Banana Powder, HiVeg Peptone, MES, Activated Charcoal and Agar for Orchid seed germination? if so, how you compare it with the medium presented in the video? thanks
Has anyone tried growing orchid seeds in using a Jello packet and coconut water? It already has sugar (though I'm not sure how the amount compares here) and acidifiers.
Orchids have a symbiotic relationship with fungi in the wild - these fungi provide the seed with sugars so they can grow. At least that's the simplified explanation
We can all see that you are a proffesional plant growing but none of us have all these machines at home, video is not for usual ppl that are trying to grow some orchids from seeds in our homes without special equipments...
Lol growing orchids from seed is not a casual endeavor, regardless of your wants. If you dont already know how challenging it is to grow orchids from seed, maybe you should just stick to already grown orchids for a while, or propagade via keikis.
Orchid seeds dont keep so theres not really a market for orchid seed (thoughtl there are a lot of scam sites). This kind of thing is really just for if you yourself want to hybridize or cross breed orchids that you already own.

orchids grow in the wild without all that stuff, how do they do that?

I've got to say ofc, excellent guide! Much appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Test tube Orchid babies. This was so interesting. I learned so much about Orchids.

Excellent quality video, incredibly easy to follow ! Thanks :)
So happy to hear this, thank you 😊
Thanks for this. Such a meticulous job. Could you include the germination stage some other time?
no wonder they're expensive, when they're quite difficult to propagate...
very nice 👍
It made us appreciate orchids all the more knowing how much effort goes into growing them 😅 Thank you!
I was thinking the same. And that this is just too much for me. Lol I'll just keep buying them. Lol

Higher percentage of success, much more plants will be viable, so more money when you sell them
Explained it in the video if you were listening... Symbiosis between fungus and the endospermless seed. Thats how....
Excellent video.very informative Thank you mam for sharing the video

Just out of curiosity, are they under the light 24 hours, or just 12 like big plants?
16 hr light, 8 hr dark if i remember correctly
@Agriculture Academy, could you recommend a method of storing seed pods ? thanks

@agriculture academy, If you suspend the seeds in sterilized water, for how long it can be kept before losing its viability?
I don't understand how orchids were hybridized in the late 18th century without the use of technology and knowledge that exists today.
I can’t see any update video, did the seeds germinate successfully?
Hello! Yes they did. You can check the community tab for an update we posted a while back ☺️
Thanks 🙏
Nice video. But unfortunately most of us don't have that kind of equipment at home.

Hi there, no we have not had experience with this. We have tried using straight MS media in the past with no success
@@AgricultureAcademy thanks, may i know if the presented methods applicable for for growing cymbidiums?
Has anyone tried growing orchid seeds in using a Jello packet and coconut water? It already has sugar (though I'm not sure how the amount compares here) and acidifiers.
Would be interesting to see if anyone has had success with this technique...
So how do they grow in the swamp
Orchids have a symbiotic relationship with fungi in the wild - these fungi provide the seed with sugars so they can grow. At least that's the simplified explanation
Can I just blend the starter and a few mushrooms and see if anything grows????
I have charcoal and coconut water.

What about the fungus?

Any update?
Hey there, we posted some pictures on our community page a few months ago. They have grown even more since 🌿
@@AgricultureAcademy yeah I checked it out, really cool.
@@jbb5266 any link? I cannot find it.
@@pawekasparek897 no link, it's on their community tab on their page, they don't post often so the post is pretty close.

You used equipment and engrideints not available in the household.. I don't find this video helpful for beginners
Growing an orchid from a seed took centuries in a lab. Its not an easy process
Lol growing orchids from seed is not a casual endeavor, regardless of your wants.

In fact you are right but this experiment you can't do it in your house because the conditions are not suitable
And you can't figure out how to apply these concepts to gardening on a smaller scale?
I have a pod!!! Can't build a lab so now what? Dump it????
Who has good seeds...need some seeds... help me out... will ya!?!
Orchid seeds dont keep so theres not really a market for orchid seed (thoughtl there are a lot of scam sites). This kind of thing is really just for if you yourself want to hybridize or cross breed orchids that you already own.
You can buy Flask that have orchid seedlings.
Way too complicated
No need for a stérile room, just build up a glovebox out of a transparent storage box and gloves ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nice idea!
……I’m going to stick with young orchids
Step 1: have hundreds of dollars of lab equipment lying around
Same method can be followed to propagate seeds of any other species ?
You may need to change the basal nutrients depending on the species 🌱
@@AgricultureAcademy Thanks a lot for your advice
