My old springer has just hunted his last season at 12 years old. He got me my last pheasant of the season, but he was that tired I had to help him find it to retrieve. Wonderful dog. His replacement had his first full season and is going well.
Excellent stuff, brilliant dog. Can I ask what age she is? I've a 4.5 month old Springer Bitch. My first springer after loosing my Labrador. Springers are a different ballgame.
She’s 3 1/2yrs. IMO the key to training a springer is to keep them away from hunting live game until they reach 1yr old. Daily short training sessions on the whistle, dummy work, blind retrieves, water, etc from 6 months, but the longer you wait to hunt live game the better your chance of maintaining control in the field. The stronger the hunting instinct, the harder the dog will push the boundaries and if a springer ends up hunting for themselves you’ve lost control.
@WonderfulWorkingSpringer reassuring advice. This is the same method that I am working on. She is progressing well, bird mad, I've no intention of hunting over her until after 15 months. Won't introduce the gun either until 12 months. Her daily training is field work with whistle, marked retrieving and blind retrieving. She is showing great interest and determination but as with all 4-5 month olds, has bag loads of energy.
Credit to see a dog working so well like that I’d watch it all day
