    My old springer has just hunted his last season at 12 years old. He got me my last pheasant of the season, but he was that tired I had to help him find it to retrieve. Wonderful dog. His replacement had his first full season and is going well.

    What breeding is she

    • @WonderfulWorkingSpringer
      @WonderfulWorkingSpringer 10 місяців тому

      Both parents were shooting dogs, just one dog on the ESS database appears on her dam side, her 3rd gen sire, Swift Bill of Birdrowe and there are plenty of FTW & FTCH in his pedigree with familiar prefixes such as Rytex and Badgercourt. On her sire side her grandsire was Whitcott Dash and her grand dam was Flashing Briar of Pierglin. Whitcott Dash’s grand sire was a FTW, but you have to go back several gens to find FTWs and FTCH. You would have to go a long way back to find inbreeding.

    Hi,I like your videos, I'm just wondering what chokes you use and what cartridges?

    • @WonderfulWorkingSpringer
      @WonderfulWorkingSpringer 10 місяців тому

      1/2 & 3/4 chokes. Depending on the cover, in tight cover like woodland, 32g no.7 & no.6 and in open country the 2nd barrel is a (desperation) 36g no.5! Eley cartridges. I’m not blaming the kit for my poor shooting! While she’ll always tell me with her body language that she’s on a bird, unlike hunting with pointing dogs where you have a chance to prepare for a shot, with springers it’s all happening pretty fast; often faster than I can react!

    I have a very well bread sire here, he’s extremely hard hunting and the old style springer I am looking for a pup back and she looks very good

      @WonderfulWorkingSpringer 10 місяців тому

      Thank you. I’m not going to commit to a pup I’m afraid, just in case she has a small litter. We’ve all heard the stories of bitches having just one pup.

  • @larchgroveelectrical1023

    Are you looking to put her to an old type springer or something a bit more trial bred?

    • @WonderfulWorkingSpringer
      @WonderfulWorkingSpringer 11 місяців тому

      I wouldn’t know enough about the breed to know that there is a difference. How would you distinguish between the two? She has very little trial breeding in her first 4 gens, but she got a super nose and drive from her parents as well as her obedience and willingness to work for me. Surely if an experienced trial handler had trained her from a pup she would have made a trial dog?

    • @larchgroveelectrical1023
      @larchgroveelectrical1023 11 місяців тому

      So thinking behind it is that old type springers were bred to hunt as long as they were required to (all day as lads will tell you). But the trialling is based on 5-10 mins of huge bursts of energy and style. With long breaks in between, resulting in dogs with low stamina. Your bitch seems to have lots of style and drive and stamina. It would be lovely to see pups from her and an old style dog. I’m not sure how to pm on here to point you in the right direction. 😬

    • @WonderfulWorkingSpringer
      @WonderfulWorkingSpringer 11 місяців тому

      @larchgroveelectrical1023 thanks for that. I suppose the fear of using an unknown sire and not a known trial dog would be that there wouldn’t be the same interest in the pups. It’s hard to know what to do. She’s due in season next month, so I’ll have to make a decision.

    Love working Springers, they are good, honest, hard working dogs. Good at everything. I used to let my dogs jump the fences until I had two get caught in the top wires - not good. I don't let my dogs jump at all now, either get them through or lift them over. I miss heaps of birds too. Enjoyed your video and subscribed.

      Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. For the record, all game shot is eaten, hence no shots at anything I don’t eat. Dogs hunting with humans is in the DNA of both species for thousands of years, unlike veganism, which is now proven to cause serious detrimental health issues, including impacting human fertility. I am a meat-eater and I am fully versed about the food chain, from the field to a nicely packaged, no-blood presentation in a supermarket. You are entitled to your opinion, however it is narcissistic to believe your opinion is worth sharing with me, or anyone else. There are plenty of genuine issues in the world right now that would be well served by you posting a comment. This channel isn’t one of them.
