He did mentioned this in a sermon called "Single and Secure "
I mean ... the principle is certainly true, yes. But the underlying implication is that singleness and marriage are practically the same in terms of blessings, comforts, pleasures, joys, and happiness and that the only qualitative difference between the two is the "watering" one applies to one's current situation. Well, it is certainly true that married people can be sinners and fools and cause terrible hurt and harm to their relationship while a single person can be walking in the Spirit, growing in grace and truth, and living a Christ-centered life. But that doesn't have anything to do with singleness or marriage. Rather, it has everything to do with the people involved and their relationship with God. So videos such as this one, though well-meaning, always end up emphasizing a particularly shallow subtext that downplays the value and benefits of marriage while over-emphasizing the benefits of singleness in order to make singles feel as though they "aren't missing much" rather than addressing the real depths of this issue.
The issue is that the desire for emotional, romantic, and sexual intimacy is a real thing. Of course it is not the most important thing in life nor is it the most joyful thing to attain in life. Only Christ sufficiently provides for us the ultimate end towards which all other longings and desires point. Yet this does not erase the fact that emotional and physical desires, given to us by God, are wholly unmet and unsatisfied in the life of a single person. And this is exponentially true of a person facing truly prolonged singleness (30+). It is not simply a matter of "not watering your grass" to suggest that a person who has been blessed with a God-ordained spouse with whom they can share affection, companionship, sexual intimacy, trials and tribulations, and loving commitment somehow has "nothing better or greater" than the person who goes to bed alone every night, devoid of the emotional affection of a loving spouse, has no family of their own, and who must fight a seemingly endless battle for sexual purity from which there is no escape and no satisfaction that is not categorically sinful. To suggest that the single person "lacks nothing" in comparison to the married person in this regard is ludicrous on its face.
Ultimately, we would be better served to realize that God does not promise happiness on earth, but rather joy eternal in heaven. We are never promised a spouse, or told we will be protected from cancer, or persecution, or starvation. Quite to the contrary, we are told that we will endure suffering. Thus as Christians, we must be prepared to suffer in the flesh in loving obedience for Christ who suffered for us on the cross. And we must pray to God for the grace to be content in our suffering and walk as Christ walked. Pastors should say THAT. Flashy, artificially enthusiastic motivational speeches fall short of addressing the true depths of this issue.

I lost my fiancé (by a text message) and my Dad (by a heart attack) within two weeks of each other. This single season has been the most difficult season of my life. I do feel stuck. I do feel lonely. But my dad was a pastor to a little church in southeast Oklahoma my whole life and he didn’t raise a quitter. This whole series has regenerated me. My vision has changed and I’m not stuck anymore, I’m just being filled with the ingredients I need to start my happily ever after journey. The first step is falling in love with my creator and knowing he meets all my needs whether I’m single or married.

I've been in a relationship with someone who doesn't share the same faith with me. At first I thought there was nothing wrong cos he never did anything wrong...but after following the first 5 series and knowing what a Godly relationship entails , I've been able to gather courage to let him go. It really hurt at first....but I'm free and I've found joy.

I’ve been struggling with emptiness for years...I’ve been serving God since I was a little girl and I’ve never dated ANYONE...His protection is so strong. What is the point he is trying to make though? This is like saying "sick of being hungry" is better than "sick of eating poison." The issue is not that singles desire bad marriages. Of course a bad marriage is worse than being single just like eating fatal poison is worse than being hungry. But trying to comfort singles who desire God-blessed, God-ordained marriages by saying that they should be grateful not to be married because bad marriages are horrible is irrelevant and inane at best. It is as ludicrous as trying to comfort a starving person by saying they should be grateful for not eating because eating can, at times, lead to stomach aches. Hypocritical sophistry. Videos such as this one, though well-meaning, always end up emphasizing a particularly shallow subtext that downplays the value and benefits of marriage while over-emphasizing the benefits of singleness in order to make singles feel as though they "aren't missing much" or that they are "fortunate to avoid a bad situation."
The issue is that the desire for emotional, romantic, and sexual intimacy is a real thing. Of course it is not the most important thing in life nor is it the most joyful thing to attain in life. Only Christ sufficiently provides for us the ultimate end towards which all other longings and desires point. Yet this does not erase the fact that emotional and physical desires, given to us by God, are wholly unmet and unsatisfied in the life of a single person. And this is exponentially true of a person facing truly prolonged singleness (30+). It is not simply a matter of "not watering your grass" to suggest that a person who has been blessed with a God-ordained spouse with whom they can share affection, companionship, sexual intimacy, trials and tribulations, and loving commitment somehow has "nothing better or greater" than the person who goes to bed alone every night, devoid of the emotional affection of a loving spouse, has no family of their own, and who must fight a seemingly endless battle for sexual purity from which there is no escape and no satisfaction that is not categorically sinful. To suggest that the single person "lacks nothing" in comparison to the married person in this regard is ludicrous on its face.
Ultimately, we would be better served to realize that God does not promise happiness on earth, but rather joy eternal in heaven. We are never promised a spouse, or told we will be protected from cancer, or persecution, or starvation. Quite to the contrary, we are told that we will endure suffering. Thus as Christians, we must be prepared to suffer in the flesh in loving obedience for Christ who suffered for us on the cross. And we must pray to God for the grace to be content in our suffering and walk as Christ walked. Pastors should say THAT. Flashy, artificially enthusiastic motivational speeches fall short of addressing the true depths of this issue.
@@Arcanon10 Great points. Rich and his church serve a purpose, especially to newer young Christians. What you're discussing is a great talk to have with someone who disciples you or mentors you along with having a long successful marriage. Successful according to biblical terms.
I was an atheist/recovering catholic and churches like Hillsong and Vous gave me the door opener. Rich is not wrong. He's attempting to convey the importance of CAREFULLY CHOOSING A SPOUSE. You get 1 try essentially if you believe in not divorcing. So yes there are trials to learn from and suffering. I recommend the book I mentioned because God does not guarantee happiness but the principles to have a joyful marriage. He mentions ideals and characters that your spouse should have like being a Christian and having a hunger for God. Don't read so into it that his message is motivational. This is where you go for the meat of things and not the milk like this video. You choose who you marry and commit to "Watering" working on it. Nothing more.

I have heard the 'single and thriving' sermon so many times I thought this was going to be one of those. But he started talking about real things toward the end that really hit me. Deeper things that we are hurting from, all centers down on us healing. And thus, finally have healthy relationships. Didn't know it was what I needed but it awakened me to do the emotional work to continue healing and allow God to do his thing.
