Uncovering Eight-Year-Old Children Working in Factories

- In Nepal, over a million young children are working, many in brick factories. 11-year-old Arvind has been working for the past three years making around $1.75 a day.
The law strictly prohibits the employment of children under the age of 14, and is a crime punishable by a year of imprisonment and a fine. Yet around 10 percent of the workers in brick factories are underaged.
VICE World News Sahar Zand speaks with child labourers, their parents, and a factory owner to find out why these children are working.

The children live in the same conditions without spending their childhood working with hazards and exhaustion that can create a poor quality of life, shorter lifespan, and detriments to their mental health. Of course this is a better alternative.
Yea I'm sure they will do that and are not just interested in making a show that gets tons of views and makes money. I like watching vice, but they are just showing the problem. It is up to people to make the change. You should reach out to Arvind.

School is not the only answer. Education is several years of investment of time & money towards city based jobs. None of this is favorable for really poor people . They need basic reading writing skills with skill based training relevant to their eco system.

In India, circumstances are somewhat gloomier than in Nepal. There are about 18,400,000 slaves in modern-day India, and most of them are children. Child labour is quite rampant here. During my early college days, we were running an NGO which primarily worked on Child Education but due to rampant Child labour, we had to work on this issue too. So there was a case, we clicked a photo of a shop owner beating the heck out of child labour outside of his motorbike repairing shop. We later published it in the local newspaper. We also informed the Child helpline about this incident but to no avail. We met the superintendent of police of that distinct, We even had a meeting with the Cabinet minister for Women and Child Development regarding this issue. The Cabinet minister told us quite vigorously that India can not abolish Child labour. Child labour will gonna be here forever. This was her attitude towards this issue. & This was the time when Kailash Satyarthi got his Nobel prize for working for children's rights.

This is the harsh and sad reality. This kids should be in school;studying and playing with their friends. Not working in some factories that exploits children for work.
What else are the factories in the most remote areas supposed to do? Set up an orphanage? Bruh situations are different for everyone, I would understand how f*cked up it would be if 1st or 2nd world countries implemented child labour, but if it was third world its practically normal since everyone in general is poor they got to make money somehow and third world countries are already exploited for its resource so if you want to blame someone blame yourselves for living in your fancy 1000 dollar new york apartments or whatever rich country you live in because this is the consequence of capitalism and freedom all those cheap sh1t you get in bulk comes from these factories and these laborers from young to old, if you want to whine and moan about how harsh it is you are making their sacrifices in vain, so the least you can do is be grateful perhaps even give something back to them every once in a while

@@shrek9772 we are Our Sansar, and we are helping those kids. They are all going to school now and have extra tuition classes from our teachers on top of that to ensure they can pass all their exams.They have 100% attendance rates so far so this is an amazing result and we are very proud of the children, their families and our local staff who work tirelessly to help as many children as possible.

Talk about a reality check.... It's mind blowing how such a dark thing can exist in such a beautiful country. This is some incredible, yet truly heartbreaking stuff. Fortunately, there are also many people who have a good heart, and work against such malignant forces to help those in need. Spectacular journalism!

Inequality between each countries
Yeah I’d prefer this world ruled by dinosaurs. So much cruelty and yes it was worse even 40 years ago. But as we speak there are people doing things they did back in the 40s like chopping them up for fun.
8:27 Even when they have next to nothing, they invite you into their home and feed you without question. That's quite admirable and makes my heart hurt. As much as I'd like to donate to charities, they are extremely corrupted. You never know where your money goes. :/
Do what I do...donate local and direct. I buy the poor rice, lentils, milk powder, veg oil....stuff that keeps easily without refrigeration.
@@sensualasya I do what I can locally. I usually ask the homeless if they want some food to eat or need any necessities. I never give cash, I just buy food or any necessities they might need. If they say no to anything but cash, you know they want drugs/alcohol. Usually they are thankful for the food and I feel a little better knowing someone isn't going hungry for a few hours at the least.

That little boy is a natural-born leader. He's going to do great things for the people of his country.
Child labor is one of the pressing issues in Nepal. It's challenging to fight the system as governance is poor and has deep roots of politics involved. The lords in the remote areas rule the community.
Poverty in the remote areas has crippled people to take different routes for survival such as child labor, employment in gulf countries as a unskilled labor, and women trafficking.
It's really hard to see through the lens on the perspective and stories of families and children.
Vice team did a good work, I hope the NGO and INGO keep supporting the cause and don't get finish as a project ends.
Children are the leaders or tomorrow, I hope people leaders in Terai region create an environment to support development and growth of children for the sustainable development of society.
The smile and shine on the face of children is a real happy moment of this video. Glad to see Arvind joining school with other children, he is a real hero for his family and I see him as a natural leader.

After seeing this, Immediately you realize how petty my first world problems truly are
It's the same situation in India. An NGO recently submitted a report that 75,000 children work in the coal mines of Meghalaya to the state government. But, the government rejected it and asked them to bring the details of every kid. Most of the mines are owned by the relatives of the politicians.

That kid, Arvind is a real gem even at 11 he is looking after his mum and older sister. Looks like the initiative for the school came through Vice kudos to you guys. Otherwise, Our Sansar would have started school long before this interview or investigation. Will Vice be there to see this through? What about this school in a year or two? Will you follow up with the school and the children? Taking legal action against the employers will have consequences on the families of these kids as the parents are equally responsible, next thing you know the parents could be unemployed as well. People are waiting to take their place and jobs. These laborers are easily replaceable. 60-70% of these kids will be out of this school in less than 4 months and back to their old job or some other work. I hope that is not the case and that the pledges taken by these innocent kids at the end of the video to come to school every day and not go back to the brick factory come true. I pray these children to have a good childhood without being stolen by these cruel and ugly human adults. If you want to break this cycle, you have to go all the way through not half-assed, half-cocked. I hope Vice pursues and follows up with this after a year along with the attendance of these kids and not just the facade of the school being present for the show. God, please do help these kids and all the children in the world with identical situations. Lastly thank you Our Sansar for helping the children and their families as well.
None of these kids are out of school, in fact they are all attending our classes and have started regular school as well. They are all doing really well. It is our project, Our Sansar's, and we will ensure, the same as with any other of our projects, that we follow up on every child and every family. We work with them on a daily basis. Legal action - we will only take it if there is no other way. At the moment we are talking with the factories, schools, local businesses and communities and working on awareness campaigns - so hopefully there will be no need for legal action.
Thank you Our Sansar for the awesome humanitarian work you guys are doing and it is not easy to do what you guys are doing. Thank you for letting us know that kids are attending classes regularly. That is the real victory, keeping the kids in the school and away from forced labor otherwise, nothing else would have mattered. I want to know why the mother doesn't go back to work so her kids can go to school, no one can tell me it doesn't work that way
Sandie, the mother works as well at the same factory. But the income they bring is not enough for them to survive. Most of these families that we are helping are in debt and often in bonded labour. Majority of the parents have never been to school themselves, many are illiterate and it is very difficult for them to find other employment or even take part in training. But we are working with them individually to find a sustainable solution so that in the future they can afford to send the children to school themselves without external support. It will take time but so far the results are great - all children attend school and all parents are very happy with that.

I shouldn’t be surprised that we live in a world where people are segregated into groups of people who are considered to be lower and upper class. I find that those who are considered to be dirty to be the most hard working and humble people. Am happy that there are still good people in this world willing to help those people who are poor.

Took sociology in University, made me realize how stupid University is. Pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to get into debt for a degree that pays shit wages. From my vantage point, the so called “upper class” in society seems to be crooked ass politicians, business men, doctors, psychiatrists…
it is so lovely to see them taking the children to a school away from the work at the end. an education can break the poverty cycle and give them agency to provide for themselves and their families, giving better lives

being Nepalese and born in the UK, this hurt to watch. seeing these poor kids having to work hours on end trying to make ends meet, injuring themselves in the process and living possibly miles away from home in order to bring food to the table for their family is a horrible burden on them, having to deal with this at such a young age…i’m happy they are finally able to receive the education they deserve and i hope they grow on to become amazing people :)

It’s us, Our Sansar. We are the only charity in this part of Nepal doing this type of work despite a huge need over there. All the children in the film are receiving our classes and have just started attending regular school so we’re really happy!

having children to work is good for their mental growth and builds their character, as long as they're not neglecting school, better than doing drugs or playing video games all day.
There's a difference in having children do some work to learn, and exploitative, harsh labor that will leave them physically and psychologically damaged for life.
The point is they’re not going to school, they’re working 10 hour days for basically nothing.
