I also read She by H. Rider Haggard. I didn't enjoy it - She reminded me of the mean girls I knew in high school. Luckily, they couldn't go that far. I also read The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ayesha was an awful human being that did awful things! Makes you wonder what people would be like if there were nothing to keep them in check. I much preferred Doyle's "The Lost World" as well! Thanks, Marjorie!
Very nice update! I'm looking forward to the long form videos you've got cooking! For Spring into Adventure I read Vale of the Lost Women by Howard, Gods of Mars by ERB, and im finishing The Wager right now. I'm thinking of going with some Poe, M. R. James, and Blackthorn for Mayhem.
Thanks for the update, Jim. I've been hearing more about SHE by HRH. I might have to check that one out. Happy reading. Looking forward to hearing more on that long form content.
Even though I'm not a _BookTuber,_ I'm with ya on the TBR thing. They just don't work for me and my "monkey mind!" 😬 I have The Old Man in the Corner, which is the first story in the Teahouse Detective series by Baroness Orczy on my Kindle, so I'm going to have to bump it up on my list. 🤓 Aso, I loved the Charlie Chan movies when I was growing up and I have the first book, The House Without a Key, on my Kindle - which I had _also_ forgotten all about! 😆 🙄 Thanks for rattling my cage and thanks for sharing. 📚
You're very welcome, Lu! I have an old book by Baroness Orczy with Old Man in the Corner stories, which I haven't read yet. Judging by the story I read in "Lady on the Case," they should be just as enjoyable. But I won't put it on a TBR list ... that would be a mistake! 😉 😄 Thanks for commenting! 👋
I really enjoyed Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn and Chee stories. I've re-read and listened to them multiple times. Oh my, Charlie Chan... although I don't think I've read any of the books I so love those old movies! They were so much fun.
Thanks, Ben! Black Vulmea's a good collection. I thought I had a spare one around, but I'm not finding it on my shelves at the moment. If I run into a copy, I'll let you know. 🤞
The Charlie Chan novels are wonderful. I also enjoyed Yunte Huang’s “Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendevous with American History.”
In case you're not familiar with the quote used as a title for the Catton book, "Terrible Swift Sword" is a phrase in "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," a poem by Julia Ward Howe that was set to music and became one of the North's most popular battle tunes. The first stanza reads: "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on, Glory, Glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on." It builds to an almost apocalyptic conclusion. The most famous version of it is the arrangement by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. My parents had the choir's LP album "Songs of the North & South 1861-1865." You can find the choir performing the Battle Hymn at ua-cam.com/video/QSiVjlknuSw/v-deo.html
I ended up reading 6 books for Adventure into April but She got me. I'll finish it this month. I ended up watching Disney's Jungle Cruise which was good.
Hi Sue, Jungle Cruise was a fun movie. "She" took me a bit to get into. I didn't enjoy it at first, but it redeemed itself in the last third of the book. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for the update, Jim. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed reading H Rider Haggard's "She" - I ended up buying the four books in the series; all published by Hesperus Books. I'm still partway through the archeological memoir by Agatha Christie Mallowan - definitely well worth finishing.
I have just recently started reading the Leaphorn and Chee series, I am only on book 3 where so far it's just Leaphorn and no Chee lol. You got some cool books!
Thanks, Stormreads! I should really read them in order. I've only read a few and not in order. He wrote quite a few, and I'll have to see about getting them all. Take care for now!
The Deathlands series is great. But you should NOT start with Demons of Eden. I think it is book 37. Start with Pilgrimage from Hell if you wanna start Deathlands. Its the 1st book. Ive read the 1st 10 or so. After the 4th or 5th book you can start skipping around
Hey Doug! I recall you reading the series. I have two of them, "Demons of Eden" and "Skydark Spawn," which are numbers 37 and 61, respectively. I'll keep an eye out for the early novels and start there. Thanks for dropping by! 👋
“TBRs are not my friend.” Ditto! I really need to read She. Boy, you’ve been on a roll!
Thanks, Dave! I've tried to stick to TBR's. I just can't do it. 😆 "She" was worth the read. Thanks for dropping by. 😃

Great that Loveday is in an anthology - sounds like a great collection. I agree about She, worth persisting with. Tje World's Desire is pretty good.
I really enjoyed the Loveday Brooke story! I agree. It's nice to see stories like this that a reader wouldn't normally find or read somewhere else.

Those were some great choices for Spring Into Adventure. You can't go wrong with Howard or Burroughs! Thanks, Daniel!
Thanks for the update, Jim. I've been hearing more about SHE by HRH. I might have to check that one out. Happy reading. Looking forward to hearing more on that long form content.
Thanks, Tim! We'll see how it goes. 😏

I have only read one Hillerman decades ago. Thanks for the update.
Hi Greg! You're welcome! I've enjoyed the ones that I've read. Talk to you soon! 👋

I've really enjoyed the Hillerman books that I've read. I'm looking forward to reading the Charlie Chan book. Thanks, Steven!
Great update, happy reading!
Thanks and the same to you! 👍
Black Vulmea...I really need to pick that one up! And I'm looking forward to hearing your take on the Charlie Chan pastiche novel.
Thanks, Ben! Black Vulmea's a good collection. I thought I had a spare one around, but I'm not finding it on my shelves at the moment. If I run into a copy, I'll let you know. 🤞

Hi Kat Jack, That's awesome! I should have known that, but I didn't. 😳 I really do have the best followers and commenters! Thanks! 💯🙏
Ive never read any Howard (I KNOW!) 😮 Good one, Jim
Thanks, Allen! You have to read him one of these days soon.

Thanks, Andrew! I downloaded the complete Haggard stories from the Delphi site. I do have to read more Christie as well. 👍
