    Lovely books for all their flaws. As a kid none of this bothered me though I could tell that the REH stories were far better. The pastiche Conan will always be a puppet as REH was the only guy able to create the character or have major events.

    Great video. I don't think De Camp really saw or understood the philosophy behind Conan. If you read his letters to HP Lovecraft there are extensive debates between what Howard called Barbarism and Civilized man. Howard believed that his idea of Barbarism was the truest self, the idea of being totally true to yourself, without the guise of civilized refinement. Conan and Kull and all his Sword and Sorcery stories reflected that sense of honesty and truth. I feel that was lost on a lot of the writers that came after him that wrote Conan or Kull stories, they lack the philosophy that made it resonate with the readers and make the characters relatable. They were always guided by an inherent a priori moral code.

    • @MysteryandMayhem-gr7nn
      @MysteryandMayhem-gr7nn 4 дні тому

      Thank you! Very well said! I've only read a few excerpts from Howard's letters in some of the various paperbacks. That interchange between Howard and Lovecraft is in one of them, but I'd really like to buy the collected letters one of these days. I don't think that anyone will ever be able to write a Conan story like Howard could, though. He himself was in every one. Thanks for the comment!

    You finally got a REH Conan video out! Congratulations! I know it took a lot of effort! It was very well done and informative. The Camp books are definitely a double edged sword. On one hand they did keep Conan in the public eye and popular, but it was done in a very backhanded way that muddled REH's legacy. I am excited for Cimmerian Sept though. I'm going to be reading the two most recent Conan pastiche novels Blood of the Serpent and City of the Dead.

    • @MysteryandMayhem-gr7nn

    Great job, Jim! I'm starting Cimmerian September by reading all the new Conan e-novellas that Heroic Signatures is publishing, then going back to by Ace editions. Nice collection. I like Matt Wagner, his Grendel and Mage books are particularly dear to me, but haven't seen his Batman work until now. I have rarely liked side kicks ( I couldn't stand "boy" in the Tarzan films) so whenever Robin was with Batman it upset me. I tried voting to kill off Jason Todd. I got a busy signal. An artist edition of Batman Year One came out this month. Frank Miller was at his peak in creativity then with Daredevil, Ronin, Dark Knight, Batman Year One, DD Born Again, Elektra Assassin...all within 7 year period. One of my favorite panels in comics is when Batman holds Talia in his arms and they share a kiss. Neal Adams drew sexy men and women. Don Newton came close. Do you have the DC treasury edition that collects the Ra's Al Ghul storyline? It's fantastic! Didn't see The Killing Joke or Arkham Asylum. Two of my favorite Batman stories. Interesting video.
