    My Mother paid off my fathers $30k debt in the late 70’s and early 80’s flipping furniture by buying privately in Germany and then selling them to the US military personnel where we used to be stationed at. From there she grew into a used car lot for 20 years and then retired. So let me tell you, this might be just Furniture today but might be something completely different in a couple of years. This is very inspiring what you guys are doing! All it takes is a can do attitude!

  • @ChipLinck
    @ChipLinck 3 роки тому +741

    Interesting, but I'd include time in the cost section. Time to search, purchase(furniture and supplies), move, restore, stage, list, deliver, sell, etc.. You might discover you are not charging enough on certain pieces. That could help you price pieces appropriately, or become more selective in the pieces you choose. You want to make enough to pay for your time, and then make a profit. By paying yourself for your time (and considering that a cost), you don't end up just working for the business. Your pay is money you get to keep, and your profit is what funds the business.

    • @diywife
      @diywife  3 роки тому +159

      Hi Chip! I do try and account for time getting the piece all the way through staging, and also try to err on the side of estimating more time because there are likely costs I’m forgetting. You’re the first person that has simply explained WHY you pay yourself an hourly rate and the rest is profit that goes back into the business, that makes so much sense now!

    • @joemicheals4964
      @joemicheals4964 3 роки тому +68

      It's easy to quick calculate price minus cost equal profit but there are many hidden or intangible costs like time invested. This is where many people short change themselves. FULL travel and purchase costs, including the ones you don't buy because the seller exaggerated the item. Vehicle wear and tear, and maintenance. All expenses which can be 25 to 50% more than shown. Equipment costs and depreciation. Travel time to buy and time to sell and the endless online enquiries of Facebook. Endless " is this still available" and questions already answered in the ad. You spend as much time online buying/selling/responding as actually refinishing. And you need a populated area to move higher end product with more upscale buyers. The important little details that get left out of $4300 monthly profit. Not as fast, quick or easy as shown. Not to be a Debbie Downer but not as easy or simple as shown. Just FYI in the purpose of full disclosure.

    I'm a self-taught amateur furniture-maker. I like to do a lot of mid-century and industrial style pieces. I got my start by reading a couple books and watching youtube videos. You really learn the most with hands-on trial and error though! But most importantly, it's so rewarding to build or refurbish furniture and make it "yours." I hope more people can get into the hobby... I think this channel is a great showcase for the potential. We've really become a throw-away culture so there's quite a lot of value in repairing and refurbishing second-hand furniture!

    I am about to close on my first home and have a huge garage. I have never had the space to do larger projects. You guys are my inspiration, what a great idea to help pay down mortagage, even rainey day fund. Thnak you. Beuatiful work!

    My first thought was, either y'all live in a big city or you transported the work to a big city, and it was spot on. Way to take that risk. Ive flipped dressers before and your work is very impressive. Y'all have inspired me to get back into this hustle again. I also appreciate the prep work shown in the video (that you don't mention) and that has helped me with some of my issues with flipping dressers. Thank you!!

      @@diywife I know that it’s hard putting yourself out there and basically feel like you’re in a popularity contest with the algorithms, haters and just outright groucho grumps. But we suscribed to your channel for a reason and the talent you two have puts out joy in the world of creativity. Have fun and make fun money for your family. I’m just going shake a couple of pom poms from my corner of the world.😊🎉
