    I updated the title to make things a little more clear. I'm not putting in a M340i engine, I'm trying to build something different here. I'll include a response to a commenter for more context.
    "Yes the B58C was geared towards pushing heavier models like the X7, X5, 840i, 740i etc. Kind of like a entry level V8 replacement. Has higher compression and is designed for more air velocity through the intake and exhaust. 11:1 compression pistons vs 10.2:1 on the M340i. What was so strange is they put the B58C in the first model year of the Toyota Supra. Normally I would be afraid to tune a high compression engine. The Gen 1 B58 had 11:1 compression but wasn't as strong. When they brought out the Gen 2 they beefed everything up and put it in so many cars. If it wasn't for the people pushing the 2020 A90 Supra to 800 WHP I wouldn't have done this. The higher compression will give you more throttle response, the turbo will spool faster and you'll get better fuel economy and it just so happens to tolerate 800 WHP anyway. A stock turbo 2020 Supra with a tune can make a little more power than a stock turbo 2021 Supra with the 6 port engine. So I want to optimize for raw power and have it be super punchy during normal driving. A turbo upgrade that aims for maybe 600 WHP max with nearly stock like spool. The M340i engine can tolerate more boost given the lower compression pistons and the head has less back pressure so it won't be a bottle neck but this only comes into play at over 800 HP at the wheels. If the goal is around 600 to 700 HP then in my eyes the B58C is a better overall fit. Just to put things into perspective the 2025 M340i with the Gen 3 B58 now has 2 ports. The M340i with the Gen 2 B58 is legendary and can make 1300+ HP with a built bottom end given the free flowing head. I'm trying to build what BMW could have called the G20 340i, a torque monster super efficient daily driver that can be in its sweet spot at around 700 crank HP max. To me 700 HP is all the power in the world, the M340i was such a great daily but still didn't have the punch of the N54 with upgraded twins, I'm imagining this will be more like that. Another benefit will be the 2 ports sound great, will be interesting to see how it sounds paired with a downpipe and a stock M340i exhaust.

      2025 M340I B58 Gen 3 is now a 2 port? I thought they retained 6 ports as like in the previous gens

      I don’t remember where you’re located, Texas if I remember right? Anyways unpopular FACT for viewers that don’t know; you don’t need lower compression to run a ton of boost in this day and age. Yes in the old days lower compression was needed…because high octane fuel was next to impossible to obtain, efi tuning and knock sensors were light years behind current tech. Not an issue anymore. Run a stronger E-mix/colder plugs and throw some timing at it.
      Low compression engines generally run more boost for any given power level. Ex 10psi - 300hp
      High compression engines use less boost for the same power level.
      Ex- 6-7psi -300hp
      Again higher & more readily available octane fuel and advances in tuning/tech are what allow us to take advantage of “high compression”
      Compression is good 👍

      @@AgentExhale I think everyone thought that the M performance models would get a 6 port head again but it never ended up happening. The 2025 M340i just started showing up at dealers and it has the same 2 port as the X7, X5 and 7 series. It has the B58B30M2 so it's basically similar to what I'm ending up doing here, 11:1 compression and a 2 port head. The 2025 even has less power at 375. I'm sure they made up for the difference with the hybrid system and it will probably outperform the stock Gen 2 cars. When they brought out the 6 port M340i I think it was like a last hurrah for the non M cars. A proper 2JZ replacement, I see all the signs that the M340i/2021 Supra will be a future collectable car. I traded in my 2020 years ago and got 44K for it, a good one wouldn't be that far off 40 to 45K now. Can't recall another car holding that kind of resale value. These 2 port Gen 2 B58s will be a dime a dozen soon once more SUVs get written off. If the M340i keeps holding value and the 330i keeps dropping like a rock this swap will make way more sense. To me it already makes a lot of sense but only because I am selling my entire setup for good money and I'm making content.

      @@allcarthings7678 Yes everything you said and another major factor that makes this viable in my opinion is the 5000 psi fuel system on the Gen 2 motors to mitigate low speed preignition which can plague direct injection cars. I think if the 2020 Supra didn't have the head restriction people wouldn't break pistons at 800 WHP, the back pressure leads to excessive heat. A head swap while retaining the 11:1 compression could be interesting...

      I think it’s the lack of fear in tackling almost anything that impresses me most! I feel trepidation just changing the oil in my 2014 50i, much less anything else more involved! Wish I had even a 1/4 of this guys confidence.

    Just wanted to give an extra thank you for your videos and knowledge. I really appreciate the videos on the b48, I'm a little sad your putting the b58 in yours but completely understand why! If I knew I would fall in love with my 330i, I would have gotten the 340i in the first place haha

      Thank you very much! Yeah in some ways I’m sad to see it go but also know 100% that I’m not done with that platform. In a perfect world I’d get something like a Supra with the B46D to see what 700 crank HP looks like.

      @@VehicularDIY why the b46D ? the b46 is more restrained due to emission regulations than the b48. On the other hand, isnt the D the later production one (gen3)? the one with the exhaust headers integrated into two 3 to 1 ports. I saw some videos how the 3rd gen b58 has been having some reliability issues with the variable camschaft guides. Pd: i love ur vids. thanks for everything.

      The B46D is the exact engine in my car an is a Gen 2 engine. The Supra is running the exact same engine.

      @@VehicularDIY so no b48 is being sold in the usa (Im from ARG) cause of emissions? I still cant understand why its the "D" version on your 330i. 2020/2021 g20 330i Should pack the O1 version of the b48 which is the high performance, therefore it cant be b46. b46 are the b48 engines mounted on the 320i, engine code ends in M1 for at least the 2020/2021 g20 models.

    You’re videos have encouraged me to take on a swap like this. I am finishing up my N54 swapped e90 328i. It ran but the previous owner of the engine didn’t tell me about a bent valve so I am in the process of replacing it along with new timing chain and cam ledges and seals. Best of luck and thank you!

    Although I’m disappointed the b46 had to go, this also sounds like an awesome project. I’ve been following your guides with my 2020 330i xdrive, so far it’s stage 2 xhp, stag 2+ E50 93oct tune with mg flasher and it’s already crazy fun to drive. MST CAI, ipos catless dp and catted res delete, charge pipe upgrade, even threw on new supra rims and lowered lol. Once I’m done with college you’re videos will be my guide to go ahead and big turbo with fueling upgrades and intake manifold, at that point I’m planning on getting a better daily and turning this into a track car. Thank you for these videos, it’s awesome what you’ve done with this platform when everyone else was too good for this amazing engine.

      Yeah I'll still feature the B46 being pushed in the E30, the owner is just down the road and I would like to get a 330e with the exact B46D that is in my car to revisit building the ultimate daily.

    I honestly kind of miss the E90 content and the prospect of doing a single turbo N54... But the G20 B48(and now B58) videos are top notch!

      Yeah I had vendors saying they'd send me a full turbo kit to feature on the channel but when it was time for the pavement to hit the road they went quiet. I have the manual e88 and could easily do it just can't justify the hardware cost in terms of the views it would get.

      Yeah like I said in another video if I knew that the 330e also came with the exact engine that my 330i has I would have looked for one instead. Didn't know they started putting the 330i engine in at one point instead of the 320i. I'd like to revisit building one, maybe for a viewer. Might put it out there. Could have 600 crank HP and pull like a V8 down low with the electric torque fill. Could be the ultimate daily better than what I'm trying to build here.

    Awe inspiring work! I'm a fan of the late 2000's E90,E92,E93 (3 Series) and E60 (5 series) Bimmers with their classic good looks, though the N52 engines were particularly weak and used aluminium cylinder head bolts! The B48 and B58 engine would be an awesome swap-in for performance, longevity and efficiency. I wonder if we could utilise these coding and programming processes to fit these latest drivelines (including 8 speed ZF transmissions) and save sending these classics off to the scrap heap!?

      Yeah people are starting to swap B58s into older cars, a Gen 1 is definitely more straightforward but no reason why you couldn't get a BDC module/keys and cluster from a G series car and slap one into an E series car as well. If you did the rack and cameras on the dash could even have assisted riving if you wanted to go nuts.

      I think the 30i engine might end up being the spiritual successor to the SR20 like the B58 is to the 2JZ. Once more people get wind of how much potential it has, hopefully the E30 nearly running a 9 second 1/4 mile will help showcase that.

    Dont know if anybody has commented this, but here it goes:
    The VIN and immo info is programmed in the eeprom, however, the iflash/irom ALSO has OTP sections (one-time-programming) with the immo info, VIN of the car, HW version, etc. This part of the flash, as the name states, CANT be reprogrammed. If you flash a different ECU with the eeprom, containing the VIN and immo info of another car's ECU(like you did), there WILL be a mismatch between the flash and eeprom immo info which will prevent the engine from starting or cause different programming/immo issues. This will very likely cause you problems unless you have immoed off the flash and eeprom (turned the immobilizer off) of the ECU so it doesnt freak out or managed to align/code/reprogram the immo of rhe new ECU to your dash/key/car. This also blocks any OBD2 flashing since one of the prerequisites of an OBD2 flash is passing the security/immo challenge.

      Thanks for the comment. With the pre June 2020 DMEs they do have virtual OTP memory that the bench tools get around hence I was able to fully write over the erom and irom sections of the chip on my donor DME. The post June 2020 DMEs have bench protection and what appears to be true OTP memory. Femto is the only company that sorted out the bench protection and offer partial unlocks likely due to the OTP sections of the flash being true OTP. They can however fully read off both sections of the chip and send you the bin files which you can then have cloned to a pre June 2020 DME allowing full functionality as the DMEs are identical otherwise. With the way I left things in this video I knew that the car would likely start but wasn't sure if the irom section of the DME might contain vin information from the donor car and would exhibit odd behavior like reporting the wrong vin via a generic OBD scan tool etc. If that ended up being the case I could have just flashed the DME via esys and told it the car is an M340i. All I did in this video was default encode the DME with my VIN and modified vehicle order which I just assumed only wrote to the erom section but for all I know it might have wrote to both sections, I I could verify that via pulling the bin files back off the DME and doing a difference comparison to see the irom is changed also. I think I will do that and respond to this comment. Assuming it only wrote to the erom section I and the car starts but limits access via OBD and has odd codes I could then just fully flash the DME via esys with my modified vehicle order and that would sort that part out. I would then need a modified tune catered to the 2 port engine so basically an off the shelf tune for a 2020 Supra. I could take it further by modifying my vehicle order to be a X5 as the G05 is basically electronically identical, I would verify that by calculating the FP to see if the configuration is plausible. I could then use esys to flash the DME alone which would ensure that both the erom and irom sections of the chip have all my vehicle information including the ISN but would retain the appropriate tune. But it would probably be easier to just flash as an M340i and go the custom tune route. For me my main goal was to have no EWS codes and I could communicate with the DME even before I default encoded it so that was a good sign right out the gate. Lets say we even took this further and none of this works, I was able to even force flash the irom from my 4 cylinder, I even tried it again with no checksum checks and both times it took the information. In that state the DME wouldn't communicate in ISTA. If somehow the VIN information must be on the irom section of the flash before it would carry that information over to the new flash then I could use esys to recover the DME from that state but that goes against the way I understand how it functions, if the DME has virtual OTP and it were to be corrupted that would lock you out from being able to recover it but various flashing platforms have no issue recovering a corrupted flash as long as they can get the vitals from other modules like a BDC or CAS. This was a long reply but just outlining my thought process and I can come back to it if needed for further troubleshooting.

    That beeing said, its crazy that the pre june 2020 ECU lets you read and write that type of info. I guess BMW wanted the ECU fast and allowed Bosch to proceed like that 😄

      Yeah donor B46D engines aren't super pricey and I'll do the E30 swap in detail so you could try and replicate.

      I came across so many S58s for under $10K and believe it not it wouldn't have been much more work than what I did here and it would have bolted to the same transmission. Overall cost would have been not too far off of a 6 port B58 swap but the 2 port worked out to be a much better deal and goes more along with what I'm trying to accomplish which is a really powerful daily driver with lots of response. The S58 in the G80 wasn't too eager at low RPMS and would constantly be dropping a gear to feel quick in comfort mode.

      You referring to both the upper and lower grille? The lower tends to break and you can disable them individually if you wanted.

      @@VehicularDIY what do you mean upper and lower grill? As far as I know only the (Kidney) grill has shutters that open and close depending on temps. Main reason I would want to do it is for aesthetic purposes to be able to see the iconic V braces behind the kidney slats. I havent seen anyone safely remove the active shutters without having to take gardening pliers and cutting them all off forcefully. would be nice to see a method to remove the shutters without destroying them and to be able to reinstall them if reverting back to stock.

    Hello, this is a very nice content. If we raise the 340 radiator and make the parts under the fog lights 320, would it benefit us in terms of performance and cooling? I live in Turkey, 320 s are 1.6, we can use 320 hp with e25 tune here due to tax.

      In the US the 320i comes with these coolers from the factory. I would double check to see if they are included on a Turkish car. By the way my mother is Turkish and I've spent many months in Ayvalik, Cunda adasi specifically. Beautiful place.

      Yeah spoiler alert this E30 is getting a full metal E30 M3 conversion. Will have nearly 500 WHP and look like an E30 M3 with a crazy power to rate ratio. I'd take the B48 in an E30 over a B58 any day. I had two E30 M3s and the balance of that car with the S14 engine is untouched, the S14 has an iron block so imagine an even lighter engine tucked right back by the firewall for mid engine like handling.

      Thanks for watching! On a B46D with the IM450 I was able to make around 480 WHP with full E85. It's more realistic to say 460 to 480 WHP and low 500 for WTQ. I left it on a tune that would make over 500 WTQ and beat on it like that for nearly a year. The IM450 would heat soak the stock intake manifold and stock heat exchanger after about 3 back to back pulls. That is because it was out of its efficiency range. To combat that I installed an upgraded intake manifold and heat exchanger and after doing that I could do back to back pull continuously without any fade in power. I opted to do that rather than go with the IM500 larger turbo as that would spool later. So if you don't want to upgrade the intake manifold and heat exchanger you would aim for more like 420 to 450 WHP and I could imagine that being possible on an E40 or E50 mix with could potentially negate the need for port injection.

    Hello i searched the internet and now searching youtube and found you. So i like your swap and have a question, and hopefully it doesn't put you out your way. So i have a 14 bmw 328i n20 m sport. The motor just blew up, so I was thinking of swapping in the 330i b48. I just want to know what i need to make it happen? I can get the motor and the ecu no problem. I could even get a transmission if needed. My transmission is the 8 speed also. And word you have would be great.

    You went over the DME programming, but I've got more questions about wiring. What harnesses did you have to swap? I know the engine sub harness is a given, but is there anything else that needs to be swapped?

      I'd like to try the 330e with the same engine that is in the 330i but with the hybrid, I wonder how well that would do with the torque fill while the turbo is spooling.

      @@VehicularDIY I would like to see that too. I have a 330e Stage 1, and honestly it feels much faster than it actually is. The guy who mapped it said that absolutely no one came back to him for Stage 2, it's fast enough for the street. Edit: I would like to see what you do with it, it's your videos that convinced me mapping my car isn't as dangerous as I thought, and I'm really happy with the results.

    Loving your content, thank you. Quick question or two, id really love to get my 230i to 320bhp, would that be possible on the stock turbo, and just a remap, or would I at least need other supporting mods? Also, the car is under manufacturer warranty, so people recommend a piggy back tune, do you think these are safe, and what power gains would I be able to make do you think? Not sure if you ever sent that route before the big turbo. Thanks

      Thanks, yes a downpipe and a remap would get you to around 300 HP at the wheels. I think piggybacks are safe and you could get to maybe 280 crank HP if I had to guess.

    Hi Musa. Did you have a downpipe installed on your 330i when you had the b48? If not, then how much HP could I expect to hit if I copied your exact build and then added a downpipe (catted or catless) to it?

      Yes I have a downpipe. It would have been a big bottleneck with the upgraded turbo, I’d recommend you install it at the same time as the turbo if you’re looking to replicate my build.

    So being a guy who does a lot of dme work and swaps… are you going to go with a gen 2 pre 06/2020 B58? If so I should be able to help write ISN and VIN only concern after is FSCs for the DME because of SWT

      Oh I just watched the rest but you can’t just reball and flash though because the program space is different it won’t boot. I can help you through reading the ISN and work at resetting operating hours but don’t just write it over since they are not compatible. The eeprom contains all the coding and adaptations along with valve lift and other things and the offsets are different. Also something to know these cars do not have a rolling code like a ews. BMW moved away from rolling codes from the MSV70 dmes and newer so about 2006. There is no such thing to sync. ISN is static but often encrypted depending on application using different types of cryptographic algorithms. As far as some coding the operating hours must be reset to allow changes since you copied over your eeprom from the original 4 cylinder it will act like it accepted it but it will not change it. The same needs less the. 10 hours of operating time.

      Yes it does, depending on what year your car is you would need Gen 1 or Gen 2.
