Phantasm is a favorite of mine. I got meet Angus Scrimm a few years ago and Coscarelli and the rest of the cast a couple months back and it was all I had hoped it would be. They were all great people.
When the tall man handled the coffin by himself it sent chills down my spine when I first saw the movie
Me too...that was a great scene...with Mike watching thru the binoculars saying "WTF" ? Under his breath...😀
"It's just a dream. It's just a dream."
Tall Man: No it's not.
Would be cool if he added let me show what I mean.
Phantasm IV is the only other one in the franchise that captures similar energy to the original, extremely underrated sequel. Also has some touching closure while still not making very much sense utilizing unused footage from part 1
Agreed. It's also kind of a sad movie.
I think the reason The Tall Man pops up at the end of the original film is to show that it all really happened. Mike thinks it's a dream and wakes up thinking he's safe only for The Tall Man to appear and grab him showing that it was all real.
Yeah, I never got the "Was it just a Dream?" vibes. Yeah they talk a little about it, but Reggie never confirmed the events of the film nor denied their happening in the movie. Just explained Jody's absence during the falling action and suggests they take a vacation.
I don’t know why but some of the imagery shown in this video is reminding me of Batman: Court of Owls. I wouldn’t be surprised if Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo were inspired by this film to make the issues where Batman is trapped in the Court of Owls headquarters. Either way, great video and another film place on my watchlist.
Never thought of that, but yeah I can totally see the mausoleum in Phantasm and the underground maze feeling similar!
Interesting. Gonna pull out my CoO trade sometime and compare.
That because batman and his villain are mostly base off a horror franchises. Just where do you think they got the idea for the movie mask of the phantisim?
I love all 5 Phantasm movies, even Ravager. Ravager definitely has some extreme budget limitations but it went back to what I loved about the original, the "Is it real or just a dream/fantasy?"
This movie completely traumatized me as a kid and I'm actually pretty excited to watch the whole series myself
Nice read on the series. I think that Fred Myrow also managed to write one of those seminal 1970s horror themes based on a simple chord progression, a la Carpenter or Mike Oldfield.
"Ice-cream man, it's all in his head."
Phantasm has been available on DVD since 1999. It's never been difficult to acquire between then and 2016.
I bought mine brand new in a brick and mortar store in the 2000s.
Only Phantasm II was difficult to acquire legally for several years.
Can I just quickly say that your titles are consistently on par with whatever work your analysing
Thanks!
This was hands down the BEST review of not only Phantasm, but of the entire series. And I've seen hundreds of reviews, splendid work!
Just got the arrow boxset from a few years ago for a great price. Gona binge watch this weekend :3
Just watched this movie for the first time the other night, so this upload was almost perfectly timed!
"BOY!"
before slenderman before looksee... there was the tall man...BOY!
Wow I can’t believe I kind of cast this franchise aside as just more shitty horror movies. I’m watching all of these again
Did you watch them?
Thank you, Matt. I never heard of this movie, and I try to find it and give it a watch. Thank you again.
I was 13 when I saw it. Freaked me out. It was brilliant...still is 40 years later.
I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this horror series before. It looks right up my alley. I get heavy Evil Dead vibes. Most likely from that POV shot the silver ball following the characters through doors. I like the ambiguous this story looks. Trippy sequences that could inspire fever dreams. I’ll definitely be checking these out for this months spoop nights. Would you say it’s worthwhile watching all of them? Fantastic work, my friend!
Thanks, my man! It’s definitely a cult franchise with a smaller following. I’d say definitely watch the first three. I’m not a fan of Four and Five, but if you like the ones you’ll watch, you’ll probably end up watching them all like I did haha.
Still the best video analysis of Phantasm on the Tube. Thank you.
PHANTASM is just AMAZING! Love the series of movies AWESOME VID
Its never over!
Thanks for giving me something to watch this weekend.
I’ve never heard of this movie but now I’m crazy excited 👍
Enjoy the movie ! Try not to be overly analytical whilst watching it, just get into it and abandon all logic ! It is my favorite movie and since first watching it at the cinema back in ' 79 I still find it scary, creepy, weird, funny but most of all it is entertaining.
Phantasm has grown to be one of my favorite horror movies. Such an original and fantastic film. Apparently it was a major influence on Supernatural and the Slender Man Mythos
Been a fan of these movies since I was a kid, and love every one of them for their strengths as well as weaknesses. Recently been reading the unofficial companion guide, phantasm exhumed, which covers so much of what made the original what it is. If the retrospectives in there for the other films are anywhere near as involved, its sure to be a hell of a read, and I already can recommend it to fans of the series :)
Loved the original, wish the sequels did not make it damn near unwatchable and unknowable from a story an plot line.... However I still tell people "just watch the original" holds up to this day
This channel is underrated
Great video! Never heard of this film, but I’m incredibly excited to watch it.
Great video, Phantasm alternates with Dawn of the Dead as my favorite horror movie.
Thanks! Love both those films. Evil Dead II is my personal favorite horror movie.
Coscarelli should write a novel based on this.
This is a movie about how dreams and death and intense emotions exist across an idea of the multiverse. The tall man is almost akin to the cenobites but instead of guarding the gates, he has possessed the dr and is using a physical vessel and his ability to cross planes to create an interdimensional empire. Fuckin awesome.
Fun Fact: The Tall Man's real name is Jebediah Morningside.
Imagine if after death you expect to go to heaven just for Tall Man to aproach you n tell : You're journey is now complete , now you come to us !
I read coscarellis book about 2 years ago and it was really good! He just talks about how he made his movies
THE greatest horror film ever made. perfect. fever dream indeed.
God this movie is a masterpiece
Damn good movies just wish they would do more with it ravager was not good in my opinion but rest in peace tall man
I think Phantasm II is the best one in the series. Such a blast of a film.
Nice annalist
Got a sub from me, I love these philms!
I still need therapy for when I saw that movie when I was 11
My favorite musician releases a new sneak peek for his new album and my favorite content creator releases a new video right when I'm going to take a bath... Well it can wait.
Taking a bath while watching a video sounds great actually
Phantasm was a rated R flick aimed at 12 year olds. BRILLIANT!
One of my favorite aspects of this movie is that it DOES NOT explain everything. Fuck i love this movie and it's score and I'm a Don Coscarelli fan. If not for him John Does at the End would've never happened.
Evil Ball? Nice background song pick.... I love Jeremy Schmidt :)
Perfect for the mood and I couldn't resist the easter egg!
The dwarves have no relation to Star Wars, likely just a coincidence
They were, a frightening one for Don and Co.. Star Wars was still in production while Phantasm was well under way but Premiered well before they finished.
In the Commentary they even talk about how one of the Staff busted in with a cardboard cutout of a Jawa and everyone freaked. But seeing as they were so far in, changing how the Lurkers look would be too much effort, plus the likelyhood of a rip off from two movies being developed at the same time was seen as low.
There are thousands of the Tall Man. And thousands of dimensions each with the Tall Man. And somehow Mike is connected and conscious of each one.
5:36 Perhaps a better actor, but a worse Mike.
9:02 Jody never planned to leave Mike behind.
10:39 Star Wars and Phantasm were in production at the same time. After Star Wars premiered One of the Staff actually barged in with a cardboard cutout of a Jawa. The Staff worried over this very thought from the viewers talked of changing the Lurkers but, they were so far in that they went with it seeing as a rip off of a character Made At The Same Time is highly unlikely.
The idea that reality is flawed and that there's a crack in our universe allowing agents from other streams of reality to seep in .The Gnostic myth revived and the mischief of the Demiurge to cross dimensions. As Marcion though the true divinity is forever hidden.
How do you find all these unique movies and comics?
Lots of reading and watching movies. I have a big catalog of topics and ideas that I pull from when I feel like it's time to cover one of them.
Will you do a video on the unmade Superman 5 film? It would've involved Christopher Reeve's Superman fighting Braniac only to get killed and resurrected in the shrunken city of Kandor
Hmmm never really looked into that movie before. Seems interesting.
@@MattDraper This is the actual script of it. www.supermanhomepage.com/movies/superman-reborn-script.pdf . Basically, even though Superman 4 was a huge mess and the film series had run its course, there was gonna be a Superman 5 anyway with Christopher Reeve reprising his role as Superman. It wasn't made because the Salkinds who had brought the rights back from Canon who made Superman 4 lost the rights to Warner. And thus Lois and Clark was made
Gonna watch the AVGN vid on this
Good timing with them dropping their video on it. I was surprised they hadn't talked about Phantasm before.
Never got around to watching Ravager… worth it?
I really like Phantasm good horror series
I disagree on ObliVion, IV dives into the 1st movie on what was real, where did this happen, when, what is the Tall Man etc. I love IV, it also is kind of a sad movie.
We all know Beastmaster is awesome.
Ironically Phantasm II is the most forgettable in my opinion. LeGros just didn't have that genuine honesty of Baldwin. He just felt like another actor playing a role.
Agreed, not a bad actor but he just completely missed Mike's personality.
Watch out for those nasty, crushed-down Ewoks, everyone!
*BOOOYYYY!!*
I like 1 and 2. 3 was so so. 4 was boring am hell and 5 was just so damn sad...
_Phantasm_ should've been a standalone film. It was an excellent psychological horror which didn't need a followup. _Phantasm II_ was slick 'n' stylish, but the remaining sequels were progressively aimless, cheap cashgrabs.
K
@@DrMurdercock But is it Special K?
Could you perhaps analyze The New Teen Titans?
It depends. How new are these titans???
@@MattDraper Heh. I mean THE New Teen Titans by George Perez and Marv Wolfman. Raven is quite possibly my favorite DC character (besides Death and Dream-- Hey, a Sandman analysis would be nice), and I'd love to see your take on her and how she handles depression, and, of course, all of the development the rest of the cast has.
Ewok? Jawa, perhaps.
Baldwins performance is far and away better. Le Gros was excellent in Point Break but next to the horrible child actor; he was the worst part of the sequel.
Lol agreed, to this day it's still a little jarring to see him play Mike. Love the movie, but not a good move by the corporate bozos
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooy
I liked the porn parody better Mangasm. The silver balls were capable of many different things in it.
phantasm rights bought by j.j. Abrahams, rereleasing it on blu-ray in time with SW ep7 with a useless chrome stormtrooper named after the films (homage? or crosspromotion?).
Apparently JJ is a big Phantasm fan, which is why he let Coscarelli use Bad Robot for remastering and Phasma was an homage
