I like the way you lay everything out, great review, got a sub from me. I remember the first time I saw Phantasm is was actually the 3rd one, it was on TV and I was just about to go to church, and the movie was at the part where the kid kills the bad people breaking in his house, and then it goes to the church where the Tall Man shows up, the spheres, and those bad guys back and zombie-fied, and that scared me to death, I didn't even want to go to church, lol, and then years later I found out that that movie was, bought them in order and the rest was history, My Favorite Horror Film & Franchise Of All Time!
+Oliver Harper Cool! You dig these films too, Oliver?? I can't wait till Phantasm 5. This is dude knows his films and I truly like this review of the Phantasm films.
RavensFilm Productions The scary part to me is going into the other dimension and seeing the Tall Man walk down the street when you see him but he doesn't see you,it seemed like purgatory.I'd like a remake but please keep the time period of the 70s and no political correctness.
I found your channel searching for a "Less Than Zero" review, and I'm enjoying your content! My favorite Phantasm is the first. I remember the science fiction element to be a great twist that caught me off guard.
I know it's hard to think of Phantasm with out Angus Scrimm, but a twist is Michael could go missing only for Reg to find him as a younger tall man, because the coffin in the back the hearse there was a black suit like the tall man's and what would Reg do I think it would put why the tall man was after him so much, and would be good ending to it all.
I was just thinking about this earlier today. It's really the only way they could go besides a recast, whoever gets the role of Tall Man, Gods help them. It doesn't even have to be the same Mike, perhaps Tall Man found and caught a similar Mike from another Dimension and changed him, stuck this Mike's Gold Sphere into his head and boom. New Antagonist. Also, we could go animation, get permission for Angus' likeness, and find someone who can sound similar. The "Boy" will never be the same though.
The Tall man gave me nightmares as a kid. I had dreams of those slaves and the platinum balls. Funny how I couldn't remember the title of the movie until I watch star wars Force awakening and learn phasma named after this movie. So star wars helped me remember a childhood nightmare. Thanks a lot. maybe I should watch all of them. If I can re watch John carpenter The Thing then I can watch this.
I just watched Phantasm 3 on a firestick channel called “Alter” last night and was blown away. The tall man and all the lore feels like something you’d see in a youtube ARG these days the story is very ahead of its time in a way. The special effects were awesome and the Reggie, Tom, and Rocky were amazing leads and carried a sense of drive you don’t see often. All in all it was a perfect package packed into a tight 90 minutes I’ll definitely be showing it to friends on Halloween. Looking forward to seeing more too.
How does one cock two shotguns clamped together (difficult). We never see Reggie pump action the gun. That's fine, I suspend my disbelief. Love, love, love this series.
Just stumbled on your channel literally looking up “phantasm movie analysis” because I also love the first movie so much. I think I was 12 first time I saw it, and not only did it creep me out, but it sparked my interest in more strange horror films. Like you don’t know if the tall man is an alien or a demon in the first movie and just keeps you gripped. Subscribed, awesome video dude.
I grew up with this film in edited form on TV in the early 80's. I loved it then, and I love it now. It's a great achievement for such a low budget film even if some of the f/x are dodgy. The most recent restored Blu Ray is a real joy.
+latinoheatariel About a decade ago, New Line Cinema was in talks with Coscarelli about some sort of new project with Phantasm. It didn't go anywhere, though. I was in contact with NLC executive Jeff Katz at the time while running the old Forever Horror website, and it sounded like a pseudo reboot of sorts. None of it was clarified, but it ultimately didn't matter, anyway.
I don't think anybody who's not a hardcore horror fan knows what Phantasm is. Even when Phantasm II came out and it was a big commercial release, it wasn't a big hit. Yeah, it made it's money back eventually, but the series has always been more successful on home video.
Well of course I couldn't agree more, the first was the best one for me because it seemed more well thought out. It was very original, not your typical gore horror movie. It's one of those movies you have to watch over and over to fully comprehend the mystery of it all. You couldn't of put it in better words of how you described it's qualities. Part 2 was fun to watch because it was exciting because it was a long awaited sequel and we all wanted to see the Tall Man back in action but I hated the new characters but overall I enjoyed seeing the Tall man and Reggie have a go at it. Part 3 was okay but at least the original main cast were brought back, but the story line wasn't as creative as the first. Part 4 I actually liked more because mainly it had revealed some mysteries that were not clear. I somehow got the idea that the tall man could never be caught with his guard down because, he never actually went out beyond his realm in his actual physical body, only clones.
Yeah. I enjoyed Phantasm II more in the second viewing.... twenty-nine years later. The original had a mood about it, a one of a kind uniqueness about it. To this day it is still, one of the most original horror movies ever made.
Great review! I truly agree Phantasm 1 throws everything at you. You've got a bit of eerie classic horror, the strong family vibe, scifi, some cleverness, lots of weirdness and the spheres thing sort of makes it feel like an "evil puzzle" movie, sort of like Cube.
#2 was a great film but it fell flat for me only because Baldwin wasn't in it. I love the last and my the time Ravenger rolls around, you come to see these people as family, and I ended up crying when the series finally came to a close.
Some B movies excel in creating an internal mythos that transcends the skill of the film maker. Phantasm is the king of these. The world Coscarelli creates in these films is endlessly fascinating, even though the writing itself is disjointed, and often lacking in cohesion. I want many more of these films.
+Patrick Bogan Yeah, there are wonky parts from film-to-film based on budget, studio interference, and what not. Had Coscarelli had the resources to do what he wanted with each film, I think we would've gotten some more consistency.
Loved your review especially with the dark background really gives a good atmosphere a lot of reviewers do scary movies in the light and you feel they just don’t bring the realism and your right I loved them all but the first one watching as a kid when it first came out just scared the shit out of you and even with the low budget was awesome and still is today and again yes that first one just pulls you in I liked the first one but the rest carries its weight! But seen your review and got to give you a thumbs up and what would it be without those famous spheres and those Cudas thanks for the review 👍🏽👍🏽!
I must say as a fan of the Phranchise, I think your retrospective is quite good. It shows the respect and reverence it deserves. Thanks for making it. I'm going to subscribe to your channel, because I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts when Ravager finally comes out.
I thought IV was a great movie and the ending was absolutely perfect. I would say its only second to phantasm 1. I dont think the series could have ended any better personally
I feel that after Ravager is released, I would like to see JJ Abrams work on a Phantasm remake with Coscarelli as an advisor. Abrams is a master of reboots and staying true to the roots and pleasing fans. His work on cleaning the first movie up to a 4k quality was a true gift to the fans and shows he is as much a fan as the rest of us are.
Ooh, this reminds me of when I found articles on the net several years back. They were talking about how Coscarelli had been approached some time ago for remakes or reboots for Phantasm. He apparently turned them down (although interested), because he wanted to finish the story first.
@@KyeEnzoden Coscarelli was a lying hack since Ravager not only did not wrap up the story, but wasted the last moments we had of Angus Scrimm to play the Tall Man for any meaningful scenes.
Part 2 was the one I watched the most as a kid and holds mementoes for me, but I like part 3 the best. I did get tired of the zombies after a while. Worst zombies ever since they didn't get to kill anyone and got killed repeatedly. Time to update your retrospective.
I remember watching the 1st one and wondering what was real and what was a dream. I immediately had to watch it again. Then came the sequels which I believe were all great in their own right. Definitely the most original horror film I've ever seen. To this day I place it number 2 on my list behind the Exorcist. Timeless and pure fucking genius. R.I.P. Angus Scrimm
i wrote a creepypasta called CANDYMAN vs SLENDERMAN , and i wrote in the tallman character because i plan on writing and narrating a story called PHANTASM : The gateway
Im relatively young im in my mid 20’s i was introduced to this movie in high school through cinemassacre and i always thought these movies were very cool.

Do you think that the tall man was allway's after Michael to be he's sidekick or replacement because the tall man allway's say's it's time to come home boy and after when tall man take's the ball out of Michael head you yellow stuff coming out and not blood.

Angus was inspired by the old legends and brought a strong presence to the Tall Man something lost in most horror movies.

I swear, it seems like we'll be waiting forever for Phantasm Ravager. Watched the preview, and it looks pretty damn solid.

wonder why they never did a remake of the classic 79 phantasm im thinking no one could replace angus scrimm as the tall man BOYYYYYYYYYY RIP

Yeah, I don't see how it could be a segway to V. There's way too much lore building and shyt going on to be just filler or setup.
I was only nine years old when this movie came out and the tall man scared the shit out of me but sooo cool ,)

solid review! I will never forget the tall man.
I just noticed the emblem on the original cudas hood scoop reads ‘Cuda 440-6. It wasn’t represented as a Hemicuda after all.

Phantasm 2 has plenty surreal moments and a dreamlike quality. And yes it's my favourite, though I love them all.
Same. I've always been partial to the second film, though I enjoy the series as a while. I'd rank them: 2 1 4 3 and 5.
Best franchise ever ....thanx for the review! Bubba Ho Tepp maybe?
eryck rice Bubba ho tep was so freakin great
Oh. forgot about this. "Phantasm V; Ravager" trailer has been released. It's on youtube..
Phantasm=best bonkers film ever! Nick you and I were born in same year of 1980. I listen to you from Ireland I love listening to your many reviews

Nice review. I'd have a hard time ranking the films BUT, I like 3 and 5 better than 2, and 4 kinda sucks... this, of course taking 1 out of the contest.
I'm not a big horror movie guy but there's something about Phantasm. I believe part 1, when I saw it as a young kid, pulled me in. Never forgot about it.
Spot on brother
I'm still waiting for Phantasm Ravager to come out soon, I'm hoping its this year.
Phantasm V is scheduled for release October 7th, on DVD and Digital
are you saying it did not make it to the theatre straight to dvd
+latinoheatariel I think it's getting a very limited theatrical release, but I think you need to reserve your tickets
thanks for the info
Have you thought about doing more Phantasm reviews? And what did you think about Ravager?
I never got to watching Ravager. Seeing the really cheap quality of it all in the trailer did not instill me with confidence or excitement. I heard a lot of unflattering things about it, too.
the first movie that's my favorite it was on tv I think I was 12? the scene where the finger turns into a big fly which me and my brother thought was pretty hilarious at the time ! then my parents came home and sent me to bed I didn't get to see the rest of the movie till years later.
More a thriller than horror and as a result - when I was a kid scariest movie ever!
Actually in the 1st its not a Hemi Cuda. Its a 1971 Plymouth 440-6 Pack 4-Speed 'Cuda
Great job
Thanks, man! I really appreciate the praise.

Phantasm V another placeholder film!
1 & 3 are my favorites. No real Mike, no buy (II). I have to admit the Cuda is as much of a character as Reggie, Mike, The Tall Man, and Jody.
The only problem I have with this series is the rules weren't established through out. The best part of the series is that we were never sure what the rules were. I've contradicted myself but if I watched the series with years long gaps in between, I'd be perplexed. Thankfully I'm marathoning the series so it makes more sense.
I get you. There was no rules established because even the heroes don't fully know what's real and what's surreal. Lots of mind bending and nightmare scenarios, but there's really no explanation of how the Tall Man is able to twist reality around and make all this stuff happen. It's fun to play in because you can make it as vague and mysterious as possible, but also a bit baffling and inconsistent because the concepts have no boundaries to confine themselves to. You can't keep on a through line track of ideas when almost anything is possible and none of it has to make sense.
Most horror films try to make you not care about the victims or even hold them in contempt.
Phantasm 4 was wicked
Phantasm II would have been much better with Mike Baldwin and bring back Jody. Keep the full family dynamic.
Lanky Dude was furniture sales man
But the full potential of the story and the great ideas was never reached mainly because Universal had the money to make that happen but failed to understand and appreciate the concepts and characters of phantasm.
It's almost like you've got peanut butter stuck to the roof of your skull...
will you do a review of ravager
Not sure. If I did I would have to wait until a Blu-Ray release so I could rip footage from the disc for the review as not much promotional material exists for the film.
rip Angus Scrimm
the tallman rip
What habbent to phantasmagoria 2005?Can somebody please upload it again
Tall Man best horror/thriller monster/villain.
How, in the hell could Phantasm II be considered the best in the series?
You never really explained what Phantasm was about exactly
Unfortunately, I don't think Don Coscarelli ever REALLY explained what Phantasm was about either. It's all very surreal and open to interpretation.
Do you think that the tall man was allway's after Michael to be he's sidekick or replacement because the tall man allway's say's it's time to come home boy and after when tall man take's the ball out of Michael head you yellow stuff coming out and not blood.
Not a Hemi 440-6

And having the romance and tossing it aside with no payoff or bringing the story forward was plain stupid. I liked having a girl in the movie who was feminine yet not some helpless victim like most horror films.
... and what-not...
is the tallman based on the slenderman?
no... tall man was loooong before slenderman. If I had to take a guess at even a possibility, I'd say it might be the other way around...
Tallman was invented in 1979 in Phantasm, Slenderman was created 40 years later in a 2009 thread.
