We were staying in motel across the river on the hill and watched these folks in the water, ice cold water catching these salmon as they do every year. alaskans only fishing, the folks depend on the run of the salmon to feed their families in the winter.its controlled by alaskan wildlife authority very closley.I applaud these folks standing in freezing ass water to feed their families.what a beautiful state!!
Thanks for taking us along on the Salmon Run on the Kenai River. Next year everyone will have a homemade square net made from PC & wet suits.. Great work with the video
The white pvc square net guys looked like they were packing in da fish. You could tell by the look on some of the other dippers faces like"dang i went and spent bigbucks on this fancy hand made aluminum dipnet, and the guys with the $20 pvc specials be rakin them in....
LMAO "combat" dip netting. I prefer dipnetting from a boat. Every summer for years we got our limit and canned them up. Down by the mouth, when a school would rush the sand bar it looked like popcorn popping. Had one leap right into our boat once. What fun!
@@TheAlaskanOutsider Not a gray area at all. I take it you also don't have your part 107 license for commercial drone photography. You probably also didn't realize you were in the controlled airspace of the Kenai Airport. You just keep up with the ignorance defense. That should work well.
I was really surprised to see how many Alaskans like to Dip Net.It has to be in thousands that line the best rivers in July to net the fish as they migrate up the Rivers. What does a pound of quality smoked salmon cost in Alaska.?
@Tony Bromirski Pay no attention to the pompous anglers pouring scorn on this activity. This is fishing, definitely. It's fun, definitely. So it's sport, and from what I hear of food prices in Alaska, you'd be mad to pass it up.
Go look somewhere else if you dont like it. In my family, not a bit of it goes to waste and then to supplement for the rest the year by gardening, rabbits, chicken, fishing halibut and some caribou. I know where my food comes from and I respect the environment of which I harvest from. Harder than you think. Especially in places like fish creek which is where I primarily dip net. 48 salmon this year. Was a good time and have plenty of smoke salmon jared and frozen that will last till next season.
Sept. 8, 2020---Never fished that part of the Kenai. Was stationed at Elmendorf 77-79 with my buds and I hitting 2 different sections of that river. I'd never used a fly before, so all of this was new to me. Was told you could feel the difference between the weight bouncing on the river bed vs when a salmon took it. Bump, bump, bump...nothing. Repeat as long as you want. They got their fish and it was time to go to another section. Man, I was getting bummed out, but also pissed. There's two things about the 2nd part of the river: there was a cable strung across it, with a small barge attached to it and think it cost something like $2 for a round trip. Now I'd of been happy to fish one side, but apparently, the salmon only came up on the other side, so I paid my fare. There was also a sign just up river saying no fishing past this point. One guy made the mistake of casting his fly past this sign and then this guy writes him a ticket! Yeah, game warden. I figured 8-10lb salmon, use 10lb fishing line.....lost THREE fish who broke my line. Eventually, FINALLY caught mine and after that, had no trouble catching others on future trips. Ended up buying dyed fur squirrel tail fur and everything else to make my own flies. Made 'em on my time off and had about fifty made just in case I lost any due to rocks or possible broken fishing line which I ended up going to 20lb test. Thing is, others would find themselves out of flies (but not my buds) and I ended up selling each fly for $5. Looked it up and it equals $19 in todays money. Considering I made these flies for about 50 cents each, that was one hell of a mark up and I usually sold at least a dozen per trip to people. One Japanese couple was there one time and she caught a Dolly Varden about 10lbs and was going to let it go because it wasn't a salmon. I told her she could keep it AND still catch a salmon as she had the licenses for both. They were quite happy to find this out. Another time, we're returning to the other side where our cars were at when some woman REALLY casted out her fly. Of all things, she some home snagged the barge runners hand, where the web area between the thumb and finger. She's SCREAMING I got one, I got one and as for that guy, you KNOW he was doing some screaming himself and it WASN'T I got one. He pulled out his knife and cut the line. Afterwards, it was time to clean those fish and into the other cooler they went. Had 3-4 smokers that the guys had in the barracks and they'd be smoking for a good number of hours while we're at work. Nothing like getting off work, munching on smoke salmon, drinking beer and bs'ing with your buds. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Wow sounds like you have had quite the Alaskan Adventures yourself! Thanks for sharing and reminiscing! Thanks for watching and hope to see you in the next video :)
There really aren't bears around like you see in other river areas in Alaska. they are around, but this area shown is in town. The bears are mostly in the outlying areas. I worked for PD patrolling the beach, and I lived there in Kenai.
@@TheAlaskanOutsider @ omg ....even two year ....really unbelievable ..I also stay in snowy country but not more than Alaska ..if I get time , I will travel in this are.
But isn't it awesome that the fisheries biologist are keeping tight grips on populations and regulations that allows Alaskans to do this! What they're doing is obviously working or there wouldn't be numbers like this. Yay for the fish and the fishermen!
Actually it's 25 per head of household and then 10 for every dependant after that. I've processed many fishing licenses and dip net permits in my day. Also, I just looked up the rules and regs for dipnettins this season and the info I provided is accurate. www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=PersonalUsebyAreaSouthcentralKenaiSalmon.regs
It is faaar from fishing.... 80% are from Anchorage or Wasilla( city alaskans) and rape the beach leave their Honey Buckets and bull shit salmon waste above high tide mark and give us all the middle finger as they drive away...pitiful
The Alaskan Outsider I know its sad. I only caught 6 fish from the same spot! Everyone else caught like 1 or 2 or a head cold. Hobo jims song old anchor bar is too true man. Listen to it if you haven't.
The Alaskan Outsider no problem. Jim sings about life experience not vicarious bullshit like alot of singers. Glad go meet someone from UA-cam that didnt get all butt hurt from a little comment.
люди как саранча накинулась на бедную рыбу!! почему-то это зрелище отлова рыбы, ее убийства и алчность людей вызывает только отвращение!!! рыбак с удочкой - это философия, это красиво!
Yeah sustainable, too many fish in the river would tear up the sockeye breeding grounds, causing more damage then letting a few thousand Alaskans dip net.

Some great shots in there! To bad the fishing was so bad this year!
I take it you were the ones flying the drones last week over us while I was dipnetting.
Josiah Martin just a heads up. It’s against FAA regs to fly over groups of people like that. Be careful!

Do you mean the oil off the fish you can smell?

Enough gas to get to the river, cost of poles, tackle and a net. My freezer is full of salmon and I have no idea what it costs:)
I don't know. I never buy salmon, always fish for it
Nice drone footage.
hey Josiah
Man I have never seen anyone dip net like that ,,,LOL

I hate dip netters, they trash the beach, and it’s an over kill.
The numbers are always low
I saw people doing that this year 2018. Not catching shit while I was up to my waist in water catching fish. Depper doesnt mean better.

Yup...not very sporting.
It is not sport...it is grocery shopping. This is why it is only open to Alaskans and not tourists. It is considered "subsistence fishing".

The EU fishing fleet will soon fOook this up for you when they can no longer pilage the UK FISHING grounds 😂
He is fishing illegally. The regulations state that the net must have a handle attached. And there are no bears on this beach
Easy much?..
no hay necesidad de maltrato a los peses
there is no need for fish abuse
It’s the most humane way to kill them...
