I love the fact that when Lily called out for Mama that Mama gave up her original child to instead go to Lily. It goes to show that Mama didnt want just any child, she wanted her child and that's basically what Lily is. Mama raised and loved Lily for so long that Lily is her baby.
The part where she hears Lily calling for her... to me, that shows she wasn't a mindless creature or an evil demon. She was their mother, if not in blood than in action. In her simple, flawed way she fed them, protected them, played with them, loved them. She knew them, knew their names. She spoke with them, made and kept promises to them. She loved her first child, but her first child died and in finding Lily and Victoria, she was able to let that loss go and embrace her new foundlings. I always thought Mama was very unique and interesting because the antagonist was uniquely human.
@@SmilingCardinal-qu5cwNo, I think the way it happened was that Mama was an asylum patient and she actually did have the baby, but it was taken from her since she was deemed “unstable” and she ended up killing a Nun at the orphanage to take her baby back
This movie was heartbreaking. I felt for Mama. The villian in the movie was the father of the girls. He murdered his wife and was going to kill his innocent daughters too, but Mama rescued them and tried to raise them best she could.
I wouldn't call it beautiful. She killed lilly because of her selfishness of moving on. She couldn't be content with her own baby and takes another life. Wtf ???
@@joelisbored13 I called it beautiful Because of the woman willing to protect those two babies, even if it meant being killed by a angry ghost in the process. She was willing to go to the ends of the earth for them. A mother's love knows no end. But also, lilly went willingly. Yes she's just a child and can't think for herself, but that ghost was all she really knew. She must have felt safe, and that's where she belonged. But in a way, with her going, she essentially sacrificed herself so that her sister could live, the woman could live, and the ghost could finally be at rest.

Her getting the bones of her original child should have been the end of the movie, imo. It just doesn't sit well with me that she spends half the movie killing people(most of whom were just in the wrong place at the wrong time) and is just given one of the two kids to take with her forever.
The way Jessica's character is risking her life for the lives of her husband's brother's children is amazing... especially when she grabs the legs of Victoria..
Mama just slowly becoming herself as she was holding her dead baby, finally finding her as she grieved, as a mother. But when lily called out for her, she realised that lily was her child, she was the baby she saw, the one she took care of, becoming the bad spirit again.
This movie is sooo underrated, man. No, it's not perfect - the transition from feral to civilized is too smooth, and the Aunt and Uncle's "types" seem out of place. But the good outweighs the bad by a serious long shot. I recommend Mama so highly.
I think Victoria was able to transition a little bit easier because she was older when her parents died and they were abandoned so she did have memories of what it was like before they had to live in the woods with Mama. Now Lily was still a baby so the only life she knew was with Mama. That's the difference
