7:11: A back story on the 1976 and 1977 Texas A&M Aggies. At a time when Earl Campbell was taking all of the headlines in the conference and national media, A&M had at fullback in its wishbone a 6 foot, 262 pound man who was also a 100 yard dash sprinter. George Woodard rushed for 1,153 yards in 1976 and 1,107 in 1977. Like Campbell, he was probably headed to an NFL career, but he suffered a knee injury prior to the 1978 season that effectively ended his football career.
I remember George Woodard. He was indeed a great talent. A&M also had a fine QB. I think his name was David Walker and he was called the Brazos Babe, IIRC.
Had a few decent athletes on defense as well. A team Tradition once and a while for a few decades.
Great series. The writing and narration are clear, concise, top notch. So much better than a million talking heads arguing about nonsense.

Nolan Cromwell was an NFL safety for the Rams for 11 years. I coached the Bone in the late 80s in HS. I liked it. We were the only team that ran it and so it was hard for others to prepare for. 11:23 I remember those coaching shorts... yikes... Also ran a lot of option from I backs. Like the Bone, the FB is always the dive.
Bama and Oklahoma did not run triple option all game. They ran power football. But the fear of the option really slowed defenses down. One of my favorite plays is at 4:27. Fake to the FB and then run the HB off tackle.Starts like option and hits inside.

If you really pay attention to this video and all of this classic footage, someone finally figured out that you have to have great athletes on the defensive side of the ball to finally match and shut this offense down.
The Irish beat 4 wishbone teams (Texas and Bama twice) in the 70's that screwed up their title dreams. As I recall, ND was supposed to be run out of the stadium each time. Best era of NCAA football. The wishbone was fun to watch no doubt.

I'm not a fan of multi-part videos of anything, but this multi-part series on the wishbone had me hooked! I looked forward to clicking onto the next part after the previous one had concluded.
The film clips and concise scripted narration was splendid!
A great touch was including UCLA QB Mark Harmon in Part 3. It was also well-placed about informing the viewers that despite UCLA's massive success with the wishbone, that the restrictive rules by the Pac-8 conference at the time only allowed for one team in the conference for Bowl season play.
Oklahoma and Alabama were my favorite NCAA football teams in the late 1970's!!! Their wishbone offenses were awesome! The wishbone made me fall in love with college football! I hope that y'all do a documentary about the U. of Arizona's "Desert Swam Defense" of the 1990's some day too!

Amazing run by Alabama and Oklahoma in the 70's. 203 wins, 5 national titles and both ave 10 wins a season. UNBELIEVABLE. Hats off to Bear Bryant and Barry Switzer.

I've been watching football since the late sixties, and in my mind Earl Campbell was the best back I've ever seen. Because of his bruising style, his pro career didn't last as long as other great backs. But for a few years there he was amazing.

Oklahoma had the highest win % in college football in the 1970's(.877% from 1970-79) with national championships in 1974 and 1975. In 1971, 1972, 1977, 1978 and 1979 one loss(in 1973 a tie) prevented them from winning more titles. Alabama finished 2nd in win %(.863) in the 1970's.

And who won the National Championship in 1976? Yeah... that Kansas team didn't look too good against them in the '75 Sun Bowl.
Arkansas beat Oklahoma 31-6 in that 1978 Orange Bowl with their 2nd string. Lou Holtz benched a lot of their starters in that game. Familiarity and talent could stop that offense
An uncharacteristically bad day for OU. That same offense also beat Arkansas 42-8 in the 86 Orange Bowl

Switzer didn't have any discipline over his players, and the OU team had partied and were not prepared to play that game. I remember watching that game, and the OU players seemed to be moving in slow motion. The Arkansas players were faster, stronger, and had more stamina in that game, which, in other circumstances, the players would have been more evenly matched. I am not discounting the game that Arkansas played, but the OU players and coaching staff were responsible for not being ready for the game.
The constant here is Lou Holtz. Great coach.
I can think of a reason why GT didn't have success with the WB. Talent level. College football teams are all built around the recruit first, then coaching.

I'm surprised the great Tom Osborne never embraced the 'bone. Especially since I think he only beat Switzer FOUR times in his first 16 attempts.
Osborne got his in the 90s though
Embraced many bone concepts and used them in the I. He liked tight ends and flankers more than a full house backfield.
As cornfed said, Nebraska was running a lot of option out of I backs. It isn't like Nebraska was easy to defend either.
3 of those Nebraska wins vs Oklahoma was with Turner Gill. He never lost to them

I was in Jackson, Ms in 1980 at the Bama-MSU game with Emory Bellard coachiing against "the Bear" and MSU beat #1 Bama 6-3,i believe was the score.😊
One last word
The wishbone was and still is a great play
But if you don't use it right it will beat you
Suppose you set up in the wishbone
You also set a tight end on the same side plus 2 WR
You need 8 men blocking including the QB
You should be able to gain a lot of yards or a touchdown
I I formation works the same way
But with a WR you can pass
But this allows you to gain 35 yards per play
And there’s Notre Dame again ruining seasons

The Sooners were just as dirty as the old Southwest Conference....SMU....uHem....Out of all those teams I don't know how the whole conference didn't go down because they were all paying players. Why just SMU? Attorneys? Booster money? They all did it and had enough oil and gas money to pay but SMU was the Oswald. Anyway, now they poisoned the Big 8 and now they are the SEC's problem.
