Jason, hats off to you for sharing your techniques with us. This demistifies some thoughts about doing guitar repairs. As a woodworker,I think if the time came for me to try this,I now would because of your help. Thanks!
That's actually what it is, for the most part. That, and the Epiphone Silverburst SG that I've been testing out at the Guitar Center where I live feels absolutely PERFECT. I don't care that it's an Epi, I love the way it feels.
I make my own template, and use a blank pickguard than route thru the blank into the body, takes less time, I had a company in China make the blank pickguards, a little expensive at first but than about $2 a blank after that, a pickguard with p90 route sells for about $15 so I make a little
Hi Jason, I'm looking to buy an Epiphone Les Paul Junior but it has an Epiphone 700T humbucker in it, i would like a P90 dog ear putting in, is this possible and as a rough estimate how much would it cost to have the P90 dog ear fitted?
@LollarGuitars ah it's ok, it's actually for a les paul that i want it for, gonna hopefully get some plexiglass and get a mate of mine to cut for me, thanks anyway
@LollarGuitars i had a question. Is there somethin that can be installed in guitar to stop humming on single coil pickups?I have seen noise suppressor foot switches do they work?I have a grounded outlet i do not like htat buzz noise.
Hey Jason, I have a question about Batwing P90's. Apparently Gibson uses some kind of threaded clip that goes over the open-ended tab of the dogear baseplate. Are you able to make those clips, or do you have access to them? I've got a P90 I need to install Batwing style (the body is too thin for wood mounting), but I can't find those clips anywhere.
Hi Jason, I'm looking into buying a Gibson SG classic and i've heard that if i replace the p90's in that guitar with Lollar p90's i'll get a more vintage classic sound. I just wanted to hear someone's opinion on this. P.S. I'm playing older Rock like Grateful Dead/Allman Bros. rock.
+owwwwcccchhhh I would suggest taking the instrument to a local guitar tech or luthier in your area, if this is something that you are not comfortable doing yourself.
+owwwwcccchhhh Luckily your Tele probably have a pickguard to cover any excess rout in the body. So long as the rout in the pickguard is done well, it will look very clean!
Or just buy some p90 stlye pickups in Humbucker size and call it a day. Lol. Good vid though. You know what your doing. I take it that modifying a bucker style guitar to fit p90's is much easier than the other way around? And without a whole "cover" top style pickguard/guitar to cover up all the work would look kinda funky.
If someone were to pay you for a job like this, (putting P90s in a guitar that was made for humbuckers) how much would you charge? ... Hypothetically ...
Just a wee point ,epiphone SG are not copys, they are a budget SG, gibson own epiphone so not copys also the bat wing scratch plate are differnt fro model to model
i've watched all the videos (they're awesome) and you've already answered tons of my questions. i am going to convert a standard tele neck pickup to house a p90. i'm leaving the bridge alone. i found an acrylic routing template on stew mac. i'm unsure of one thing and i apologize if i keep missing it in this videos--what size router bit are you using? 3/8", 1/2"? i'm going to route the cavity about 3/4" deep unless you suggest otherwise (might be a matter of trial and error i suppose). thanks!

Favoriting this tutorial for use once I get my SG this summer. Excellent demonstration. :)

@LollarGuitars ok thanks i was thinking about getting a les paul with p90s but i didn't like that they only had models with black covers so thanks

if i were to purchase a blank sheet of pickguard, would i be able to undermount dog-ear p90s on the pickguard the same way that your batwing p90 does?

Well, if I'm going to watch someone's pickup installation video, it might as well be Jason Lollars. ...unless Seth Lover is on UA-cam.
Hey. Is there anywhere you can think of that would route the hole for me? Thank you.
+owwwwcccchhhh I would suggest taking the instrument to a local guitar tech or luthier in your area, if this is something that you are not comfortable doing yourself.
+Lollar Pickups Thank you. I'm really not comfortable doing this. I'm very much a beginner and want to get P90s in my telecaster. So thank you.

can you switch the cover on a p90 pickup?

Do you need to re-shield the cavity with paint or tape after you route through the cotaing on the guitar?
professorhardknock yes
I wanna plexiglass pickguard :P
Jason Lollar sounds like Nicholas Cage.
what is supposed to see here with this video quality???
Yeah, this video is 13 years old. HD video wasn't really common back then. So we're currently planning to reshoot all of our old videos like this.
