This has got to be one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. This guy explains thoroughly and concisely and somehow manages not to bore the heck out of you while doing it. Thanks so much. My hubby brought one of these home from the dump and it needs a new pump. You ought to give tutorials on shop organization too. One of the cleanest most organized shops I have seen.

After inheriting a broken bissell thought I was going to have to trash it. Couldn't figure out why the beater bar wouldn't work, but after looking it over found out that grooved belt holder was completely sheared off, so that meant a new pump. Pump is on order, so I think this old woman can tackle the fix with your help. Beats the heck out of 50 bucks an hour to a repair person. Thanks a bunch!!
Charlie Sarsfield is my hero!!! I had disassembled my Bissell Pro Heat to repair a broken hose. After re-assembling it would no longer spray at all. Watching this video I discovered that the smart mix piston had indeed stayed in the unit so was no longer functional. Following Charlie's instructions, I reassembled machine correctly. Working great!! Thanks Charlie!!!
As others have said, the piston re-installing was what I needed. The heater was gunked up, and I solved that. The video is head and shoulders above ANY others I have seen. Thanks again.
I too was able to replace my pump by watching this video. After trying many options to get my cleaner to spray, this was the only solution. Thank you. One thing though, after a $22 investment for a new pump from Amazon, there may have been another option. I took the old pump out and was shaking out the water and then a small pebble was shook out. I think that maybe the pump was just blocked. I don't want to go through disassembly and reassembly to see if that was my problem. But I will check for a blockage there before I purchase another pump.
I checked out your video because my brand new Bissell is not working. I JUST USED IT ONE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your video is so thorough! I just wish you lived on Guam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, your initial demo of how to remove the housing was a blessing for me. I was struggling to put it back and came back to find a video that would show me how it is done. Thank you for your careful demonstration of how to do this with the smartmix button and piston adjustment. You saved my day. Wonderful video showing every small detail to take care of and so organized. Even your voice is so clear and to the point.

Brilliant. When Bissell told me that there were no spares available for model 7901-J I almost gave up, but thanks to your video and another couple on UA-cam, I have got it working. I spent a lot of time looking at the pump end of the Bissell but then realised that if the accessory hose is pumping the problem must lie at the handle end - either the fluid switch or a blocked heater. My problem was the heater. Thank you Charlie. Thank you UA-cam!
Thank you so much Charlie. I've watched some articles to fix the water flow and all worked great when all of a certain the motor started to get louder and smelly. So no I can take it even here step by step to check everything out and if need be, replace the motor. You took time for even the smallest details and I want to thank you for it.
Great video!! Thanks - Have a 9200T that’s been in basement for 7 yrs aftr being used once. Trying to get it going and brushes won’t work after trying all of Bissels trouble shooting steps. Bissels help site is uselaess for anything further that may involve the non upright - brush motor activation switch, circuit breaker or possible breush moteo replacement. Frustrating part is they sell the parts on line however direct you to an authorized service center. Not DIY friendly - for crying out loud , the units are not that expensive and taking to a service center will cost more than the unit is worth or a new one is worth! Any tips?
Excellent video, you are a natural in front of a camera. Great camera work, wonderful explanations in a clear easy to understand voice. You helped to see how to remove the floor nozzle window, which on my cleaner was stuck on so firmly I had to gently pry with a screwdriver all around the perimeter to get it free. Thanks.

Your video was great because when we had the Bissell apart we were like "what goes where?" We put it back together and had a greater understanding of what could be wrong with the machine with your help. We could have never even attempted to fix it without you. Again, I can't thank you enough! We were ready to spend $250 and just buy a new one when it seemed this one still had a lot of life left in it. You saved us money. Please keep up the good work sharing your knowledge with everyone.

Thanks for the video I have a 7901 about 8 years old, so far no issues but it is good to know that I can fix it when the time comes, I hate replacing something when I can fix it and save money.

Hi Mr. Sarsfield, Well, this is quite an adventure. One that I wouldn't have dreamed of embarking upon if I hadn't found your video! So, The heater core has been replaced and the majority of the lines between the the flow indicator and the heater core have been flushed and are clear. I also checked the t-connector and cleared that. I found the blockage in one of the lines that runs between the heater pump and the flow indicator - which is what I thought was the problem initially. It was indeed, but if I hadn't replaced the core - which was blocked, had a hole in it, and was pushing all kinds of granular build-up through the system, I would have most certainly had a short at some point (at best). When i put it back together, I faced some challenges and paused to come back and watch your video again - I'm sure at least 25 of the showings on your views tally are mine. Sure enough, I had dropped the pin that regulates the flow of the cleaning liquid. Thanks to your video explanation, I was able to get it back in and get the casing back on. I was psyched. (And, I'll admit, feeling a little proud) That is until I looked down and saw a spare hose :-( I'm not entirely sure where it goes - I'm thinking I should have video taped my adventure. I'm going to watch you video again and see if I can spot it. It's 14 1/4" with a white flow regulator on one end (white plastic unit with a spring-tab to control the flow between two attachment points for two hoses. If, in the meantime you get this (and stop giggling long enough to respond) you'd save me a whole lot of sleuthing if you have an idea where it goes and would let me know.' I have a hunch it connects to the handle and is the connector that allows the trigger to release the flow in the unit. I knew I should have taken a photo. Anyway, thanks for everything! This has been a riot. It would be super if I can actually fix this carpet cleaner! And, it would be thanks to you!! ~Annie
Thanks for this video, and link. Ours was a 9200-2 model, but it helped with the understanding of how things worked. I was able to unclog the lines, unclog the nozzles, and then make it work again. We were on the verge of buying a new machine. Hopefully this will allow us to get a few more years of service out of our machine!

Thank you for posting this video. I was troubleshooting a friend's ProHeat and could not figure out what the hell was wrong. I ordered a new water pump to no avail. I referenced your excellent video to note how the water hoses were routed. Guess what? Someone before me had tried to fix it and routed the hoses incorrectly. After watching your video, I was able to reroute the hoses correctly and completely fix the problem. Bissell should hire you as a service tech. Nice job man. Thanks f
Thank you for this video. I have struggled with the soap piston at the 3:49 mark for a while. I couldn't get it reassembled correctly. Your video very clearly shows how to do it correctly. My wife is happy now.
Fantastic video, very clear and descriptive (I'd have broken the small piston without it). Noisy motor sorted which I was able to access and managed to take the motor apart and successfully replaced the faulty bearing (mine was a 608-2RS) for less than $2.00 !!!!!!
Charlie, your awesome; you really are. But I have had 3 Bissell carpet cleanerts in 3 years. Used each one twice; once with no issues and second time was repairing something. It simply isn't worth all my time. I make good money but work long hours. My off time labor is worth what I make at work in my opinion. So I am done with Bissell. But I appreciate the video, great instructions, and all the people you have helped.
Great video! wife's friend at work gave my wife this Bissell she found curbside. It had no sprayer function up front , otherwise worked. this video gave me all the info I needed to tear it down and fix it! turns out the nozzles were just clogged with grit! easy fix! thanks for the information!

Same as others and a HUGE THANK YOU!! as i also had a serious issue with that damn piston and could not figure it out.. this is about the only video that coves it AND you took your time and did it in an easy to understand way. With your help i got the piston back in and working. I dont post often but you did save my ass!! I've rebuilt dirtbikes even a custom chopper but nothing had me as messed up as that damn piston! So i HAD to log in and say thanks!

Thank-you for this video! I took my machine apart to find out why it wasn't spraying. I could not get it back together because of the smart mix piston. Without this video, I would have never gotten it back together! Now I can order a new pump and replace it myself!

Did what u recommended & it sprayed. Red thing was spinning but when we put it together it wouldn't work. I'm the one that uses it & I kept telling my husband it felt as tho the trigger arm wasn't depressing the valve hard enough to open it. He kept repositioning the arm & nothing. He finally glued a piece of cork to the end of the arm and when we put it together & depressed trigger it worked. The valve needed more pressure to open-maybe failing? Thank you 4 your patience & help. Ur wonderful!

I'm in UK with a 1623E (no heater) very similar to your one with the red spray outlets, I think it's the power steamer. I've stripped and cleaned it and there is no rust or blockage, all belts look fine and the pump is spinning around merrily and there's plenty of vacuum!! More to come

Very good video Charlie! I disassembled mine to clean the heater and spray nozzles then reassembled. After reassembly I couldn't get any cleaner out due to the Smartmix piston not installed back correctly. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I watched your video. When I disassembled the piston fell out on the ground and I just stuck it back in the orifice and thought the knob would catch it, obviously I was wrong. Thanks again!

Charlie Sarsfield. Well I'm a 62 year old woman who made the mistake of letting water sit in my shampooer. We have a lot of lime in our water even though we have a filter. Now my only problem is getting it back together to see if it will work after I soaked as many connections and hoses that I could in vinegar overnight. Wish you were close by and you could come by and put it together for me. But thanks for the very informative video and so glad to see camera was well focused and not slung around showing everything and jumping up and down shaking. You did a wonderful job on the making video. Heard you got some cornbread for the fix, come put mine back together and I'll throw in the pinto beans to go with it and the fried taters LOL. Dude. Thank you thank you thank you for this! A thousand times! My toddler, somehow (the magic of toddlers, amiright?) managed to wedge a plastic peg up in the motor housing. All we knew was, it made a God-awful noise when we turned it on and smelled like the motor was burning. Hubby was about to just toss it and replace it but I wanted to see if I could save the money if I could. Thanks to this video, I was able to take it apart, open the housing, and find that damned peg. It makes a weird noise when you turn it off now, so I'll probably have to take it apart again next weekend to figure out why (probably some leftover debris from the peg), but it runs without that constant grinding sound and does all the stuff it's supposed to. I owe you big time!
You video and editing is first class. I have water at the hose end but not floor. Will be checking the heater. That link to 'cleaning the heater' is okay, but that guy has a 90 second video that took almost six minutes to watch. He could edit it for greater clarity, but it does serve its purpose and I will be using it as well.
Great video. My motor died, I had a second hand replacement so easy job replacing...BUT I had real issues with the piston coming off the water/shampoo selector. You video put that right for me, so big thanks for sharing. Well edited, easy to follow video.
A DIY video that keeps on giving. Between this video, the link to Partswarehouse and the link to videos about cleaning out the heater, I was able to get my old Bissell ProHeat Self-Propelled 7950 back into tip-top shape.
With out a doubt this is the best instructional video i have ever seen on repairing and reassembling. I have to give you 20 stars although 10 stars are the norm your way above that. Without your video i would have been a sacrificial lamb to the repair shops and there cut throat prices for repairs. Superb instructional video. Luv the warning signs and also the plug being placed in view of the camera to emphasize that the unit needs to be unplugged. I need to take my unit apart to find the source of a cleaning solution tank leak (I suspect it has something to do with the piston after watching your video). Anywho......a most excellent video.

Great video . Spoted the problem with the pumping problem from your video. The hoses coming of the pump to the mixing valve were put on wrong. So i have a new pump that it turns out i did not need , oh well . Your video saved me from tossing this out. Thank you Charlie! I have been searching for a video that shows how to get that little piston back on the dial, the one for rinse, high and low traffic. Yours was the only one that showed how to get that back on so the housing can be put on. I had to change out the base flow indicator. Thank you again and I love the magnet idea, it's a bummer when you lose the screws.
yeah thank you very much know about the piston really after i struggled for hrs. trying to get the lid on. this was such a big help as i just replace the motor and pump in my bissel. when i went to the bissell store to ask a question they didnt want to tell me . they wanted me to haul myine dwn there so they could charge me.. thanks to you i saved at least 159.00. great video thanks again
Thanks a lot! The toothed belt gear had come out of the plastic it was pressed into; this caused the brush not to rotate and finally the pump belt to break. In any case I bought the pump and brush belt only to find the gear was busted (poor design) which meant I needed a new pump. The service center obviously wasn't going to tell me how to replace the pump but did sell it to me. The Bissell help line would not send instructions. Internet search = Walla! BTW the new pump has improved design!
Charlie. Thank you immensely for your tutorial! I could not get the direction figured out to replace the piston with a new replacement knob! Once I saw your Succinct video it was placed onto the housing in one minute, and correctly dialing the three options! (I won’t say how many portions of levels and positions I had tested! )

Great video!! Thanks - Have a 9200T that’s been in basement for 7 yrs aftr being used once.
Trying to get it going and brushes won’t work after trying all of Bissels trouble shooting steps.
Bissels help site is uselaess for anything further that may involve the non upright - brush motor
activation switch, circuit breaker or possible breush moteo replacement. Frustrating part is they
sell the parts on line however direct you to an authorized service center. Not DIY friendly - for
crying out loud , the units are not that expensive and taking to a service center will cost more
than the unit is worth or a new one is worth! Any tips?
Excellent video, you are a natural in front of a camera. Great camera work, wonderful explanations in a clear easy to understand voice. You helped to see how to remove the floor nozzle window, which on my cleaner was stuck on so firmly I had to gently pry with a screwdriver all around the perimeter to get it free. Thanks.

Your video was great because when we had the Bissell apart we were like "what goes where?" We put it back together and had a greater understanding of what could be wrong with the machine with your help. We could have never even attempted to fix it without you. Again, I can't thank you enough! We were ready to spend $250 and just buy a new one when it seemed this one still had a lot of life left in it. You saved us money. Please keep up the good work sharing your knowledge with everyone.

Thanks for the video I have a 7901 about 8 years old, so far no issues but it is good to know that I can fix it when the time comes, I hate replacing something when I can fix it and save money.

Hi Mr. Sarsfield, Well, this is quite an adventure. One that I wouldn't have dreamed of embarking upon if I hadn't found your video! So, The heater core has been replaced and the majority of the lines between the the flow indicator and the heater core have been flushed and are clear. I also checked the t-connector and cleared that. I found the blockage in one of the lines that runs between the heater pump and the flow indicator - which is what I thought was the problem initially. It was indeed, but if I hadn't replaced the core - which was blocked, had a hole in it, and was pushing all kinds of granular build-up through the system, I would have most certainly had a short at some point (at best).
When i put it back together, I faced some challenges and paused to come back and watch your video again - I'm sure at least 25 of the showings on your views tally are mine. Sure enough, I had dropped the pin that regulates the flow of the cleaning liquid. Thanks to your video explanation, I was able to get it back in and get the casing back on. I was psyched. (And, I'll admit, feeling a little proud) That is until I looked down and saw a spare hose :-(
I'm not entirely sure where it goes - I'm thinking I should have video taped my adventure. I'm going to watch you video again and see if I can spot it. It's 14 1/4" with a white flow regulator on one end (white plastic unit with a spring-tab to control the flow between two attachment points for two hoses.
If, in the meantime you get this (and stop giggling long enough to respond) you'd save me a whole lot of sleuthing if you have an idea where it goes and would let me know.'
I have a hunch it connects to the handle and is the connector that allows the trigger to release the flow in the unit. I knew I should have taken a photo.
Anyway, thanks for everything! This has been a riot. It would be super if I can actually fix this carpet cleaner! And, it would be thanks to you!! ~Annie
Thanks for this video, and link. Ours was a 9200-2 model, but it helped with the understanding of how things worked. I was able to unclog the lines, unclog the nozzles, and then make it work again. We were on the verge of buying a new machine. Hopefully this will allow us to get a few more years of service out of our machine!

Thank you for posting this video. I was troubleshooting a friend's ProHeat and could not figure out what the hell was wrong. I ordered a new water pump to no avail. I referenced your excellent video to note how the water hoses were routed. Guess what? Someone before me had tried to fix it and routed the hoses incorrectly. After watching your video, I was able to reroute the hoses correctly and completely fix the problem. Bissell should hire you as a service tech. Nice job man. Thanks f

Fantastic video, very clear and descriptive (I'd have broken the small piston without it). Noisy motor sorted which I was able to access and managed to take the motor apart and successfully replaced the faulty bearing (mine was a 608-2RS) for less than $2.00 !!!!!!
Charlie, your awesome; you really are. But I have had 3 Bissell carpet cleanerts in 3 years. Used each one twice; once with no issues and second time was repairing something. It simply isn't worth all my time. I make good money but work long hours. My off time labor is worth what I make at work in my opinion. So I am done with Bissell. But I appreciate the video, great instructions, and all the people you have helped.

Great video! wife's friend at work gave my wife this Bissell she found curbside. It had no sprayer function up front , otherwise worked. this video gave me all the info I needed to tear it down and fix it!
turns out the nozzles were just clogged with grit! easy fix!

With your help i got the piston back in and working. I dont post often but you did save my ass!! I've rebuilt dirtbikes even a custom chopper but nothing had me as messed up as that damn piston! Thank-you for this video! I took my machine apart to find out why it wasn't spraying. I could not get it back together because of the smart mix piston. Without this video, I would have never gotten it back together! Now I can order a new pump and replace it myself!

Did what u recommended & it sprayed. Red thing was spinning but when we put it together it wouldn't work. I'm the one that uses it & I kept telling my husband it felt as tho the trigger arm wasn't depressing the valve hard enough to open it. He kept repositioning the arm & nothing. He finally glued a piece of cork to the end of the arm and when we put it together & depressed trigger it worked. The valve needed more pressure to open-maybe failing? Thank you 4 your patience & help. Ur wonderful!

I'm in UK with a 1623E (no heater) very similar to your one with the red spray outlets, I think it's the power steamer.
I've stripped and cleaned it and there is no rust or blockage, all belts look fine and the pump is spinning around merrily and there's plenty of vacuum!!

Very good video Charlie! I disassembled mine to clean the heater and spray nozzles then reassembled. After reassembly I couldn't get any cleaner out due to the Smartmix piston not installed back correctly. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I watched your video. When I disassembled the piston fell out on the ground and I just stuck it back in the orifice and thought the knob would catch it, obviously I was wrong. Thanks again!

Charlie Sarsfield. Well I'm a 62 year old woman who made the mistake of letting water sit in my shampooer. We have a lot of lime in our water even though we have a filter. Now my only problem is getting it back together to see if it will work after I soaked as many connections and hoses that I could in vinegar overnight. Wish you were close by and you could come by and put it together for me. But thanks for the very informative video and so glad to see camera was well focused and not slung around showing everything and jumping up and down shaking. You did a wonderful job on the making video. Heard you got some cornbread for the fix, come put mine back together and I'll throw in the pinto beans to go with it and the fried taters LOL. My toddler, somehow (the magic of toddlers, amiright?) managed to wedge a plastic peg up in the motor housing. All we knew was, it made a God-awful noise when we turned it on and smelled like the motor was burning. Hubby was about to just toss it and replace it but I wanted to see if I could save the money if I could. Thanks to this video, I was able to take it apart, open the housing, and find that damned peg.
It makes a weird noise when you turn it off now, so I'll probably have to take it apart again next weekend to figure out why (probably some leftover debris from the peg), but it runs without that constant grinding sound and does all the stuff it's supposed to.

You video and editing is first class. I have water at the hose end but not floor. Will be checking the heater. That link to 'cleaning the heater' is okay, but that guy has a 90 second video that took almost six minutes to watch. He could edit it for greater clarity, but it does serve its purpose and I will be using it as well.
Great video. My motor died, I had a second hand replacement so easy job replacing...BUT I had real issues with the piston coming off the water/shampoo selector. You video put that right for me, so big thanks for sharing. Well edited, easy to follow video.

With out a doubt this is the best instructional video i have ever seen on repairing and reassembling. I have to give you 20 stars although 10 stars are the norm your way above that. Without your video i would have been a sacrificial lamb to the repair shops and there cut throat prices for repairs. Superb instructional video. Luv the warning signs and also the plug being placed in view of the camera to emphasize that the unit needs to be unplugged. I need to take my unit apart to find the source of a cleaning solution tank leak (I suspect it has something to do with the piston after watching your video). Anywho......a most excellent video.

Great video . Spoted the problem with the pumping problem from your video. The hoses coming of the pump to the mixing valve were put on wrong. So i have a new pump that it turns out i did not need , oh well . Your video saved me from tossing this out. Works great know . got it for free ,i guess who ever tried to fix it didn,t see youe video. Thanks a gain great work.

Thank you Charlie! I have been searching for a video that shows how to get that little piston back on the dial, the one for rinse, high and low traffic. Yours was the only one that showed how to get that back on so the housing can be put on. I had to change out the base flow indicator. Thank you again and I love the magnet idea, it's a bummer when you lose the screws.

yeah thank you very much know about the piston really after i struggled for hrs. trying to get the lid on. this was such a big help as i just replace the motor and pump in my bissel. when i went to the bissell store to ask a question they didnt want to tell me . they wanted me to haul myine dwn there so they could charge me.. thanks to you i saved at least 159.00. great video thanks again
Thanks a lot! The toothed belt gear had come out of the plastic it was pressed into; this caused the brush not to rotate and finally the pump belt to break. In any case I bought the pump and brush belt only to find the gear was busted (poor design) which meant I needed a new pump. The service center obviously wasn't going to tell me how to replace the pump but did sell it to me. The Bissell help line would not send instructions. Internet search = Walla! BTW the new pump has improved design!
Charlie. Thank you immensely for your tutorial! I could not get the direction figured out to replace the piston with a new replacement knob! Once I saw your Succinct video it was placed onto the housing in one minute, and correctly dialing the three options! (I won’t say how many portions of levels and positions I had tested! )
