  • Hello UA-camrs! Welcome to another episode! While I was down in Wales I thought I might aswell make the most of it and take part in my first coastal endurance regatta which was only the day after the Welsh rowing beach sprints regatta! It was definitely different to what I anticipated, with a combination of beach sprints and flat water rowing in there. Unfortunately I couldn't quite get the hang of it in the single for this regatta but I enjoyed it and came away with my first coastal medal too!

Drawing the course on your leg is something I have not seen before

Hey Cam, armchair coach here. When I was coastal rowing many years ago, we'd use slightly shorter oars to take the load down a little as the boats a heavier. May be worth a try.

One of the first things I was told!

Well done with your first medal.
I see when you make a tight turn you bury the blade and hold it in place with arm strength. When I do a tight turn I keep the handle much closer to my torso and lean in with my body weight. I find this really anchors my pivot point in place and decreases the time for the turn. Then again, I do not have the arm strength you display.

Definitely. Unfortunately when I pin against the torso I can’t really get a good stroke on the other side. Still learning!

@CameronBuchan Makes sense. There is more than one way to do most jobs.

My experience comes from open water racing the U.S. Are you allowed to put a compass or GPS device on your boat? That may help in navigation and cut down on the amount of extra distance you rowed. When making a turn of more than 90 degrees or more, consider approachng the buoy from further away and starting your turn ealier. This will result in a wider turn but you will keep your speed up. On turns it's a balnce between speed and distance covered. Sharp turn, lower speed.

Had my GPS but was more just a case of me not being fully aware! 😅 and definitely on the turns, only showed first and last. Some were ok!!

Congratulations on your 1st coastal rowing win but disappointed that having lost your novice status you weren’t chucked in water as per tradition in rowing although with your stature, that could be a logistical nightmare! 😎

Enjoy yourself and look to be consistent over thing rather than doing anything fancy! Good luck!

Listen to your coach. Also, have enough of a balance between training and everything else in your life so you don't burn out.
