Restoration of a 1860 ( Napoleon III era ) Lefaucheux revolver. We have found this gun while magnet fishing in South of France.
Judging by its condition, it has been in the water for decades.
The gun was damaged but we decided to preserve it by removing the rust, making it functionnal and protecting the metal for a display.
Judging by its condition we decided not to contact the police.
This video is only a restoration of an historical object and in no way about the apology of weapons.
Here is the video of its discovery : • On trouve deux pistole...

Has it been confirmed that this is now functional as a firearm?
I can't imagine it's the same caliber it used to be, given how much internal material was removed from the cylinder chambers and the barrel.
I mean, mechanically it functions, but did the tolerances survive to actually be able to fire safely and accurately (at least, within a reasonable degree of how accurate it was when manufactured)?
Because to me, a tool (especially a firearm) isn't "functional" if it can't be used for it's original purpose.

The mechanical action seems fine, and some mild inconsistencies in the cylinder chambers shouldn't cause too much issue.
The biggest problems are the barrel inconsistencies, now-wider barrel diameter, destroyed rifling, and wider gap between the cylinder and barrel.
It would probably shoot, but not accurately, and the risk of a squib would be my main concern.

fascinating era and style of weapon, I had one such gun imported from France to Britain. Excellent job on the restoration, it is a shame it was lost for so long as such guns usually have a very beautiful finish.

Next time maybe you could video record the process of taking something apart. Then when you're putting it back together, you can refer back to the video recording if you can't figure out where something goes.

What do you mean? There’s pitting over the entire gun. Granted the steel wool circle sander is an awful choice for restoration. You probably saw one video about how many restorations are faked and now you call out every single video. 🙄

Amazing restoration! What a relic! What was the process called when you soaked it in the solution with electricity being ran through? Is Is this what removed the rust? I am into amateur straight razor restoration so I'd like to use this process.
