Not sure why Metabo HPT has been largely ignored on UA-cam but they have made some of the best tools out there for years. Great video as always.
Metabo doesn't really advertise or hype like the other big brands. Also the whole metabo hpt merger thing still has everyone confused about what they are. I think they would have been better to stick with the Hitachi name. It doesn't help either that they only make power tools. I don't care personally but the customer has spoken and they want to be in a manufacturers ecosystem with complete lines of products from hand tools to clothing and storage as well. It's like Apple vs Android at this point.
@Kyle Fowler it's a shame because, to me, they have probably the most balanced platform. Great power and ergonomics and a lifetime warranty that is good for as long as they make the tool.

I personally use Milwaukee, I have lately been buying the M12 Fuel line and am extremely impressed.
With that being said, I am impressed with the power of this tool. The plug in option is unique, I don't know if it would come into play, unless you only own a single tool and one battery. Then it could definitely be a benefit to continue working while battery is being charged. Like most probably, I have a few batteries in reserve.

All China now unfortunately but luckily the old hitachi Japan tools aren’t too hard to get just very pricey. Same with the Japanese Makita. We get the China versions while Japan gets the Japanese versions which are better built and better constructed
@@Slimmyjimy He means it'd be nice if they introduced more of their lineup in North America, regardless of where it's made. We only get a small fraction of what they manufacture. Even Europe and Australia see a lot more than what is introduced in the US.
And it's not all made in China. Most of their miter saws are made in Malaysia. They also have three 36v cordless miter saws made in Japan, one of which is available in the US.

I really appreciate all your hard work building the dyno coupled with countless hours filming and editing.
I take great comfort, in knowing that my m18 mid torque, is basically an old skool IR gun without the compressor.
I work in a tire shop and use my m18 1/2 inch daily. I did 20 tires today and another 8 or so wheels off the car for rotates/various other jobs. I charge the battery 1 time a week.
That kind of power used to be limited to a large air compressor and expensive tool.
So realistically for MOST of the applications would you rather have a big knob on the end of the tool that is the battery, or just have a cord that is electrical rather than a pneumatic hose connected without that obstructive battery?

I recently bought the hikoki/metabo gun, can confirm the breakaway torque numbers are in the ballpark to your results, 32mm socket on a m24 wheel stud, we set all the nuts to 650nm and it was able to break it loose with little hassle. I have the high torque gun in 3/4 aswell, it regularly out performs the bosses near new 1' milwaukee gun much to his displeasure.
I would really like to see this tested again with an off the shelf tool.
This is an off the shelf tool he literally says he wasn't given the tool by the company it's just stock the stores getting ready to sell.

Great video as always. The Metabo brand of tools seems to be a great value especially given the performance you get from them. Unfortunately, for me and I’m sure for many other people, I’m already invested in a different battery line(Milwaukee in my case) so it wouldn’t make much sense for me to start another line of batteries no matter the performance.

Great performance, would get this over Milwaukee, but as a small business owner price is not a big issue so instead i just ordered 4pcs 40v Makita batteries and a couple of chargers, and obviously some tools too. Got to wait for the 40v midtorque to become available here but waiting for the best isnt too hard.

Same here except it is Dewalt for me. i have lots of Dewalt batteries and quite a few tools. im not about to switch all of that over. they do just fine for me.
I am in the Makita 18v lineup of tools. But I’m really considering getting into the Milwaukee 12v because of the multi tool. The ratchets and that cordless angle grinder. It’s hard to do it because it’s pricey and I would need at least a few batteries for em. But the tool line up they have for the 12v is seriously amazing. They don’t have any real competition when it comes to the size weight and flexibility of the batteries. Not even dewalt can touch them. I feel like no matter what you need the Milwaukee 12v line has what you need. Unless you need a high torque impact wrench. But even their 12v has some pretty good torque numbers if you don’t need anything over 400ish.

Haven’t looked at Metabo before because I didn’t realize they were hitachi. We have some 10 and 15 year old hitachi 1/2” impacts and drills that still work like a charm. Would be really interested to see how the 3/4 drive does, that’s what I’m in the market for right now.
The large high Milwaukee I got from Cornwell with a free battery for 299.99 plus tax but no charger. Best deal I found on a truck!
good stuff, to me the sizing is really heavily weighted on mid torques and smaller impacts after all if they dont fit on the bolt then they cant even transfer 1 ft lb to it, high torques on the otherhand make them as big and hefty as necessary to hit as hard as possible as the point of them is to knock loose rusted seized junk and larger higher torqued fasteners
width is also a big factor my m12 stubby doesnt fit alot of bolts or requires an extension frequently due to its width not the length theres often lots of room behind it.. other times youre hammering it into a spot so tight your shaving curls of plastic off the back of it
wonder if theres any designs or products on the market for impact extensions that dont rob as much torque, maybe make them thicker, fit more snuggly on the anvil even if its a pain to get on and off, possible a set screw to synch them down proper get rid of that loose connection point cause sometimes you just have to have an extension to get on a bolt
I'm so close to going all in on Metabo HPT, but the fact that their grinder still uses the awful cam latch "tool-less" guard (you basically always need a tool because it loses pressure super easily) I haven't gone in. Once they have a guard similar to what the rest of the brands use then I'm 100% in
I own the grinder, and I love it! I haven’t had any issues with the guard. That being said, I don’t use mine super hard or for extended periods of time.
@@baraksinz2937 same we own the 36V switch and paddle and both have been impressive and powerful guard has not been a problem, more power than the other brands , low vibration and we do use the AC adapter for longer runs

I have the hikoki mid torque 3/4 impact version of this model. I wonder if it would make more power than the 1/2 because of heavier anvil

I'm curious how the Matco MCL2038HIKG does. They also have a new line of "Stubby" impacts from 1/4 to 1/2 inch which look interesting MCL1612SIK2G
Impressive performance from the metabo. I have the Milwaukee mid torque and its powerful enough and sometimes that couple mm or cm can be the difference between being able to fit the tool or not. So far I haven't came across a fastener I couldn't remove with it. But if it doesn't have the beans that's what the high torque is for.
As a fellow mechanich i agree, my most used gun is the gen1 stubby. When you work on cars, especially on smaller ones size is more important than the power.

I'm from the land down under, and I have an as of yet unreleased hikoki/metabo hpt impact driver that is just begging to be tested by you guys across the pond. Model number is WH36DC, it's a new compact 36 volt tri beam light 1/4 hex driver rated for 217nm of forward torque but not sure about reverse torque. No load speed is claimed to be 3700 rpm with about 4100ipm.

I've been binge watching all your videos and would love to see this 1/2 impact tested its a budget impact but I want to see how it performs against its brushless counterpart that you have already tested its the CRAFTSMAN V20 Impact Wrench Cordless Kit (CMCF900M1)

I wonder is the anvil is smaller on the milwake 3/8 drive allow for a bigger hammer than possible for the 1/2 inch ?
I'm still deep on the 18v red wagon. But will probably stay with it since it fulfills all of my needs. Not to mention that the investment was huge an will be hard to switch.
Yup. Sold my 20v DeWalt and 14.4v snap-on and switches to all Milwaukee. Gonna stay that way for a long time.
There's no reason to switch. I think Milwaukee has the best all-round line-up in terms of variety, performance and price. The M18 mid torque is strong enough for most things and it's smaller which helps a lot sometimes. If it's not strong enough that's when you grab the high torque.
The other companies don’t even compare to Milwaukee when it comes to amount of tools they have, compared to the competition. I’ll stick to Milwaukee for work, and Ryobi for home/garden.
Standing here deep in the M12 line, really only lacking some kind of major high torque 1/2 inch gun, but line of work always has access to air power.
And they offer more tools then any other company

One major factor left out is the hpt is also water resistant...and can be dunked in water. Other channels ran it under water and it was still kicking
Very cool. Was about to add the 36v hammer drill to my lineup of older 18v Hitachi tools. May as well pick it up seeing that it's on sale for the holidays and wait for this. I didn't want to spend all that money on one 36v drill.

@@midniteoyl8913 yes all 18V can be used with 36V MV batteries in fact if u get the 2.5amhr MV it's actually a 5.0 for your 18V and also the 4.0/8.0 MV is an 8.0amhr for your 18V
I have watched a large portion of your comparisons now, and of course this is just speculation but based on the impacts that i own and the ability for them to either break a rusted bolt free or not, i would say a good indicator of what a gun will do is in the first 2 seconds of your chart. I would be curious to see an overlay of every single gun you have tested and see which one shows the highest number at the 2 second mark, and then see if it is actually the strogest rust busting gun in reality... (within each range of coarse, mid torques, high torques, etc.) Great videos BTW, keep er' movin bud! :)
Great point. But its important to compare within similar impacts per min. For example drivers shoot up fast due to ipm. With the same ipm range, higher earlier is more force per blow
I'd like to see a ranking of tool quality (realizing, of course, this would be fairly subjective). I'm heavily invested in Ryobi at the moment. I used to be hardcore Dewalt, but I got really tired of their crappy batteries (this was about 8 years ago, before Li-Ion was available, or at least very common). I'm not about to abandon the Ryobi stuff, but if I decide to get a decent impact wrench, I'm not sure what route I'd go. I won't pay tool truck prices, but I can afford a good bit more than a Hercules.
What about testing the Milwaukee 2663-20 1/2"? I'd like to see how it stacks up against the 2nd Gen Mid Torque. I have one I could send.

Awesome review, I would prefer the Metabo over the Makita, but Milwaukee's size and power with a 6HO are hard to beat.
Tryout the new diehard impacts sold at advance auto. I’ve been using the ratchet and they do pretty well for being as cheap as they are. They come with batteries and chargers too so it’s not too bsd
They look identical to the Workpro ones on Amazon, Den of Tools figured out the oem. There's also another brand that sells the same tools with different colors. Yes it definitely would be interesting to see a battle of the discount options.

What do you mean by that? My 05 camry has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, 372000 miles so far.
@@emort6 I mean that it appears Milwaukee is taking a step back from the bleeding edge of innovation and letting the other players (Dewalt, Makita, etc) flesh out their multi/higher volt strategies. Affording them the opportunity to cherry pick the best ideas for their products.

I'd like to see a for science episode with 18 volt and 36 volt HPT tools/Batteries. The capacity increases with 18 volt however does that make enough of a difference to continue to use the 18 volt counterpart with a 36 volt battery if you have the 36 volt tool available or does it even matter which one you use
There’s no premium price jump when going to 36v. You can gradually get into the 36v tools with no compromise to your 18v
Hell a lot of the combo kits are mixed with 18v and 36v tools
It's an interesting assumption that just because you start at 0 torque and in most practical application you will be starting off at a much higher torque
That you can just pick a spot on a chart and that's how it will proform
I can sse why you would say that but maybe a quick test to make sure that is an accurate statement is in order

When looking at the dyno charts shown in this video, part of me thinks that the anvil design may also be factoring into the results. There is a point when an impact is putting out as many ugga-duggas as it can regardless of the battery used. The Milwaukee hits harder than both the Makita and Metabo up until about 400ft-lbs. Then the Milwaukee curve flattens out significantly as the others continue rising at a steeper rate. Given the super strong initial performance of the Milwaukee, I'm inclined to think that the larger form factor (and presumably larger anvil) of the Makita and Metabo is what ultimately allows them to comfortably beat the Milwaukee, and it's less to do with the battery. Just my hunch, FWIW.
I like the theory, thanks for the insight! In my experience mid's often have similar anvils and dogs, but different mass hammers and springs.

You should do a comparison test with the Milwaukee 2767-20 vs the Milwaukee 2863-20, ive been seen a lot of people buy the 2863 resently, and its supposed to be the same tool but with one key, however my 2767 is out performing all the other guy’s 2863 in the shop. Are those tool’s diference only the “One Key” feature, or are they actually diferent on the way they perfom. With also tried maxing out the performance with the 2863 using the One Key feature to make it give all the beans posible, and also using my H.O 6.0 battery on both at full charge. However the only way we can test in the shop is tightening lug bolts to 150 ft.lbs and seeing witch takes the longest to remove the lug nut, and so far we dont know if its trigger input or what but my 2767 always wins.
I know its a wierd request but when milwaukee advertises both guns with the exact same spects and we can se the diference in the shop its kind of wierd. Hope this test can be done someday
Note, both tools where tested with the standard XC 5.0 battery at full charge, then we started swaping things and the only way it could surpass the 2767 was with the HO 6.0 battery
This unit is cheap enough for me to put into the truck (nuts torque to 150 ft lbs) and use an adapter for my M18 batteries. It depends upon the actual selling price when it's available for retail sale. If it is $199 list, I will buy one, far less expensive than another Milwaukee tool. Yeah, it's heavier and larger than the midsized Milwaukee, but for just intermittent usage, it doesn't matter.
It's 40v you wouldn't be able to adapt to a m18 battery.

I've become invested in Kobalt's tool line since I really have no need for pro grade tools, but I still think Metabo HPT looks pretty tempting. It's hard to beat Kobalt's value on a lot of tools though, especially since they regularly have some serious sales.

The thing is, Metabo hpt’s price is really not that high. They are priced pretty aggressively when compared to the big 3. I’d say sometimes even lower than Kobalt.
Avoid the Kobalt 80v OPE. The tools are "okay" but if you have any problems the customer service, repair, parts are non-existent.

Have you guys been able to test out Metabo HPT current offering of the 18v half inch rated at 225 i want to see how that compares to the stubby m12-18 version mainly due to office range as it's 150 vs 179 bare tool

Cheaper yet more powerful than an m18, also the fact that metabo hpt batteries are cheaper than Milwaukee m18
This is more similar to the Makita.
M18 has more dynamic power and is smaller.
The Makita is similar size and has similar max torque.
I'm happily in the Makita line and that where I'll stay , for now

At a certain point I’d take a smaller tool over the higher numbers. As a tech If I’m facing bolts that will be that tight I’d just assume grabbing the high torque anyways. It seems this race for torque numbers will never stop
Speaking of new Tools, any plans on testing the new „Freak“ 1860? It currently comes with a 4AH Core battery at Lowe’s. I’m really tempted to buy it but would love a „review“ first.

In the manual did this impact have the waterproof rating as some other metabo tools do? Also is the lifetime warranty thing still a deal?
Tool says Ip56 so yes, check out Workshopaddict's vid where he sticks it in a bucket of water. No manual came with it though, maybe too new
The lifetime warranty with the hpt tools is for the lifetime of that tool model, remember. As long as they make that model, that's the lifetime. So ideally, a new tool model like this has the longest warranty lifetime 😁

@@histguy101 well, what I've been told by people who looked into it, is either the lifetime of the particular model, or as long as they have parts (which may be slightly longer) I don't have any so I have no personal experience, I just know that's an important disclaimer because "lifetime warranty" is a powerful phrase with a variety of interpretations. It doesn't matter what any of us think, only what the law and their contractual language/warranty terms says 😁

Companies offer us pre-market stuff all the time, but we usually just say no or don't respond. In this case it was a rare work-around. We may not be a good source for early stuff in general though just FYI

Milwaukee covers a huge range of battery powered tools. The price point and availability and warranty, it’s a no brainer to choose Milwaukee
I must not have a brain then cuz I've been switching out many of my Milwaukee and Makita tools in my construction work cuz Metabo HPT 36V tools are superior in performance, flexibility, lifetime warranty, features and have the best nailers 25+ yrs running
All 36V tools also can be plugged in to the AC adapter and the Multivolt(36V batteries are backwards compatible to their 18V)

I would still pick makita, makita usually has extremely good components inside of their tools, and are their own company, and not owned by multiple corporations. For that reason and makitas consistent quality ill continue buying makita.
Makita tools are solid pieces of kit, I carry one for work because that's what I had when I started and it was the original brushed impact wrench which I had used on a personal vehicle to beat brake drums off, took that abuse and kept working fine. Now i carry the high torque lxt impact for work and it too gets beat up
I love Makita and will. Continue to buy some but the red and teal tools are overpriced and thus have pushed me into carrying more and more if the Metabo HPT 36V tools-wont go back. In some.if these great tools
i own the milwaukee and ryobi and I love Metabo, but a Ryobi drove the lags faster than Metabo. Maybe I need to charge the battery on full, but the Ryobi did it with one bar on the battery.....
Under the peak torque they can generate, impacts per minute will drive something faster

Get that 4ah pack cold for me and see if it takes a charge after. Within the scope of what other pro batteries handle. I've had two give up the ghost on me working in the cold. There compact 3ah does fine. My buddy's DeWalt and Milwaukee batteries did fine but two of my $169 batteries bit the dust cuz of a little cold weather.anf I'd really like to know if you guys could duplicate that. I'm sure it would be good data for everyone really.
Maybe something to do with the vents and condensation on the 4ah. All of the tools that recommend a 4ah have a protective cover that protrudes to protect the battery, but if you use them on a drill or impact, it's left exposed. The 2.5ah only has the one vent near the terminals to line up with the charger's fan, so the battery is protected on a drill.
How about test the Metabo German made ones be interesting

We've had a theory for awhile, unsubstantiated of course
Makita and Hikoki(Metabo HPT) copy each other constantly. It goes both ways(see the new XGT oscillating recip saw, 125mm circular saw, 180mm metal cutting circular saw, Bluetooth capable double spring impact driver, etc, all looking nearly identical and having nearly identical specs to Hikoki tools that have been around a while). You could even say that Makitas XGT line is a direct copy/paste of Hikoki's 36v line. The batteries are nearly identical. Makita also put vents on the 36v(40v)batteries just like Hikoki has on their 36v batteries, along with a fan and register on the charger to blow cool air through the battery while it charges. I'm not sure anyone else does this.
Plus, you have to consider any Makita or Hikoki tool being released in the US now has already been out in Japan and elsewhere for 1-2 years, and they aren't released to different places in a linear timeframe. half the time, they never get released in North America.
You'd have to look at their Japanese catalogs for 2019, 2020, and 2021 to maybe get an idea which one actually came first.
Would like to see Astro get into the cordless market. If anyone else agrees, like this so maybe they will see it.

Milwaukee needs to copy Makita LXTx2 and make some M18x2. I've heard the lawnmower will be M18x2 w/ 2x 12ah.
I really think the chainsaw and a few other tools would really benefit from a M18x2 update.
Why would you burden yourself with a battery powered lawnmower or chainsaw?
@@emort6 I have a corded Makita electric chainsaw that I honestly really like as it is really quiet and it has worked extremely well on my small property. I'd stick with my gas lawnmower though as electric wouldn't get the job done during leaf season.
@@prototype3a I said "Battery powered" but it's all good. I have cut down small trees and bushes on my property with a corded craftsman Sawzall and it worked. I spent an hour and a half blowing my leaves into the woods today (leaves were deep) with a stihl backpack blower. I wonder how long and how many Battery packs that would have taken with cordless (if even possible).
@@emort6 If I had a bigger yard, I would own a gas backpack blower. IMHO, if you're not regularly felling relatively large trees, corded or cordless makes a lot of sense as it is one less gas engine to maintain. Granted, if you only run methanol-free gasoline, that does help with the small engine maintenance.
Much heavier tools though such as my Makita 2x18V so Metabo HPT 36V batteries same size as my Milwaukee 18V so much nicer to handle and the Metabo HPT can be used in 18av tools and plugged in with AC adapter for longer use tools

First and only hpt tool I purchased is a 23gauge pin nailer that totally fucking sucked! It would set one or two pins at a time and then it takes a shit. The pins jam and you have to take it apart to clear the jam only to run two more pins and take apart again. I used Metabo brand and other brand pins with no change. If it wasn’t for the fact that I paid $200+ I would of thrown in in the garbage. I purchased the new Milwaukee M12 23gauge pin nailer and it worked flawless! I’m a Milwaukee guy and that’s all I run, only reason I purchased the metabo was because Milwaukee wouldn’t release their pin nailer until the following year. I should have waited!
Dude the Metabo HPT/Hitachi nailer came out 5yrs before any other brand even attempted it-Milwaukee was late to the game-Hitachi/Metabo HPT nailers have been the standard for over 25+ yrs - one early technology issue on one tool Doesn't speak for.the whole line of tools-ai have some Milwaukee tools.that absolutely suck cordless planer jobsite table.saw but I don't say Milwaukee sucks
The 36V line of Metabo HPT is superior to many of my red teal and yellow tools
And the down side they are not available at my lowes .

So what happens if you feed a m18impact 40v? If the adapters don't already exist I bet some of the 3D printing community would make it for you.
With these batteries, it would recognize it as an 8ah 18v battery, instead of 4ah 36v/40v battery.
The Metabo HPT 36v 4ah, Makita XGT 40v 4ah, and the M18 8.0 High Output are all identical and use the same cells and number of cells, in the same configuration. They're just divided and ran parallel for the 36v.
companies can be really touchy about their branding and marketing, let's see if this video has to be taken down or not, I hope not

China, but any Makita tool assembled at a Makita factory in China will be totally identical to one assembled at a Makita factory in Japan, down to every last part.
