George James said bye bye Jackie when he skipped clear. I was lucky enough to be there that night. The greatest Australian pacer of all time but not the best racehorse. Jack Miles slaughtered this horse time and time again but he still won.
Mount Eden's raw talent was unquestionable and I often think that he needed to be born a few years later. It's a shame he never went to Fred Snr IMO. What a machine. Funny how the times he ran would not win an MO race at GP nowadays.
Don"t forget these were the official times. From memory his unofficial time for the miracle mile was 1.49. I honestly believe that with Fred training him at this point in time he would still blow away the opposition with a clean start
In 1971 Albatross set a new world mile record at the Big Red Mile at 1.54.4. He was a 3yo then and then ran 1.54.3 as a 4yo. Mount Eden was running mid 1.56's in time trials on half mile tracks.
Saw him race a few times was there when no dill ran past him...total shock but then he ran past him...thankyou for the memory
georgie james actually said ill see u in the shower ,he did but by the time he got there the water was cold.

1.49? I doubt it. Though you'd think that on a track like Menangle he'd have given it a shake. Absolute tragedy he broke down in the states.
It was unofficially 1.49 and everybody was staggered because normally it was only done on the big American track. I will check it out

A brilliant albeit erratic champion driven by a dubbo.
