The only time it'll be worth $300 is when the leaves are the size of your head. I got one from a friend as the nursery she was at was going to to toss it because the plant was too big to sell for $20 (I'min Australia so $20 is cheapest I've seen for). It's incredible how big they can get, I'm impressed with this one, the leaves are as big as my forearm but have plans to chop it as it's so top heavy it'll fall over and snap on it's own without the right support. Definitely a plant you want to grow on a moss pole (and since this one wasn't it was in danger of breaking anyway.)
Cacti collector here! Haageocereus tenuis is super rare because it's nearly extinct in situ, but the price tag is a bit of a hoax. It was picked up by news outlets in the US.
You're correct about the bat plant. Mine thrives all year round outside and it can get below zero degrees Celsius here in Aus. The white bat plant is the same, but much slower grower!!!!
I'm one of the bonsai collectors out their and i wanted to shade a little light on that particular bonsai style. The sculpted part is dead wood carved from the living plant. trees living section is the outer rings of the plant and you can remove part of the outer rings in vertical strips and the rest of the tree will stay alive. The price tag is not about the species but the time care and age of the plant. A Master bonsai artist care and training of the plant will also add value to the bonsai. thanks again for all your great and fun videos.
As a younger bonsai nurseryman, it is encouraging to see such a resurgence of appreciation for the craft. I am two years into an apprenticeship with a traditional Japanese studio and it is as hard - and fulfilling - as it seems lol

Strongly believe that for both azlanii and tortum they meant the variegated ones (tortum is listed for around 8k right now), if the article checked recent prices spiritus also might be referring to the variegated plant. They just don't know the difference between variegated and non variegated :)

Prostate is in reference to its growth pattern. To prostrate yourself is to bow down. In Tibet the Buddhist pilgrims walk towards Lhasa and with every step they make one step, bend to their knees and stretch out and lie face down (prostrate themselves) get up and repeat.
I mean, they could have saved the whole article by stating that these plants had those insane price tags at one point, but they are easily found and inexpensive now so it’s a great time to get what once was impossible to have. But obviously they know nothing about houseplants. This is why I watch UA-cam and don’t even google anything anymore. So much crap out there.

Got my tortum from a big plant store in Sydney a year ago for $13.98. to be fair, it hasn’t grown much, but it’s still alive.
Didn't know I was crazy rich! My tortum was 7 euros for a descent plant (like potsize 9 cm).
The Philodendron Tortem is at Big Box stores now for $20.
I paid a local lady 25$ for a cutting of her PPP and before i picked it up from her, I found a plant in store for 15$, so I had two within a week of looking 🤷
It was to be expected, but damn the fertilizer sold out fast on Amazon.

I suspect some Etsy dealers just overprice large specimens to sway people with not a lot of context. Obviously a newcomer won't buy a $2000 monstera albo mature speciman but it makes $50-$100 cuttings seem a lot more reasonable. The sellers fully well know that nobody's going to buy that plant at that price.
I think it's well known that some restaurants do this to their menus, start with their priciest item to set the standard.

I can't find enough information about this orchid! Articles about it insist that it has "nine petals and sepals" unlike usual orchids. Okay? So somewhere there has to be a photograph in which the flower structure doesn't look like a normal cymbidium? Or a diagram? It all feels very emperor's new clothes to me.

This is what happens when people who don't know plants try to write about plants as if they do know something. They're like "oh plants have been trending for 5 years, I'm gonna write about it!" After the trend is on decline. 😂

Probably not. They have the opportunity with a few plants (silver sword is one endangered in the wild one I immediately think of) but haven't so far.
The Haageocereus tenuis is (was?) listed on a website for that price but it was short for "we wont sell it to you" according to the owner.
Some cacti can be ridiculously expensive because they are slow growing, so if you cant a 50yo saguaro in your backyard you will pay the price. Fortunately most of them are easy to propagate by seeds and you can buy the rarest ones for pennies. BUT other cacti cannot be propagated by seeds. Hybrids, rare mutants or extremly rare species (know from a single autosterile individual) can still be very, very, very hard to get.

So, is it possible they were so lazy and irresponsible that he/she wrote it in Cambodian (Khmer) or Chinese, then translated it to English for the rest of Hong Kong and/or whoever else? For example: the word “fenestration” translated to Khmer, then back to English is “festival” haha and “fenestration” translated to Chinese and then back to English is “open window” 😅🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

I have noticed when stuff is out of stock on ebay they put stupid prices on them which may explain some of the prices.
I have heard of a lot orchids being that sort of money. If I remember correctly they were not hybrids. They can be a pain to germinate seeds and propagate, and they may have been wild. These are 20 plus memories and I've been asleep since then hence the vagueness. I do remember being told people were spending over a million on ming vases in Asia on their quarter of a mill plant and being very shocked.
