I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you criticizing the love hypothesis without shaming the people who love it, I feel like people are obsessed with dragging people down for liking certain books. It has troupes and cringe, but that’s enjoyable to some! Read what you wanna read people!
I felt the exact same about The Love Hypothesis. I enjoyed it but was pretty neutral. Just talk to eachother & please give Adam a bit more personality. It could’ve been a four or five star-er that way, because I enjoyed the same aspects you did. Also Heartstopper is one of my all time FAVES. I read it as a webtoon way back when. 💕
YES. I agree about needing more to a romance book than just the romance taking over everything about it. Also infidelity is a no go for me too. Definitely going to read the Love Con- I mean if it made Jesse swoon👏🏻👏🏻
I am not the longest watcher of your channel, but I have followed you for several years (at least 4-5) and I just really like your channel continues to grow and evolve. This is still you reviewing books, but it feels different & I really like it! Your personality really shines in your channel & you manage to be both entertaining and genuine. Thanks for you videos!
OMG I've followed Let's Play since there was only 60 eps online and seeing it get a physical book release was so gratifying. 😊 Sam gets to grow both as a person and a romantic partner but the people in her life that don't end up dating her aren't left out of getting their own HEAs, and that just elevated the joy for me. Heartstopper is the only other book in this vid I've read and it is the epitome of the phrase "warm fuzzy feelings". 🥰
Jesse I love you. I also love Jack Edwards. He recently shifted to US. I think this calls for a collab! Your energies match a lot. Would love to see you both sharing the screen!
Would love to see a part 2 of this. Other topics could be (especially for this time of the year) witchy, dark academia oder christmas books. Romance books you could like: - red white & royal blue - the charm offensive - brown sisters series - a proposal they cant refuse - bromance book club series - the worst best man - the kiss quotient - willow creek series
Ok, but the sense of relief that you loved heartstopper! It's so wholesome. That series and the Simon Snow series are my comfort series. I adore the relationships, how real they feel, and how they're all allowed to mess up. Can't wait to see the rest of this series, Jesse!
I'm on the second volume of Heartstopper (because I want to watch the Netflix show) but it's so cute and adorable and makes me smile. Nick! Charlie! Nick and Charlie! ❤️❤️❤️
_Love Con_ sounds amazing, and I hadn't heard of it before! I absolutely loved the nerdy aspects of _Geekerella_ and _Princess and the Fangirl_ by Ashley Poston, but the romantic relationships in those books were lacking for me. Sounds like _Love Con_ would be the perfect balance!
I LOVE you reading romance!!! You're my favorite book reviewer but for the most part we enjoy reading different genres, So, I AM LIVING FOR THIS 😆!!!! Plus Webtoons!!! I only pray we get some Manga recs too!🙏🏼🙏🏼 I completely agree with lack of communication in romance giving me a headache. Totally a pet peeve of mine when it comes to romance. I also agree that having more then just romance in the book makes it way better. For sure will be reading your picks!
Late to this video but we Stan Jesse for branching out and being honest when he like’s something but more importantly when he doesn’t. Romance used to be dunked on all the time but now it feels like you’ll be brutally attacked if you don’t LOVE it. I personally love romance books but I totally understand why someone wouldn’t. I don’t like horror books and haven’t read fantasy in a long time but I understand why people love it. It’s okay to like something and it’s just as okay to not like something as long as you don’t judge people for their opinions.
Okay I am romance reader and this thrilled me to watch. Jesse, I have no frickin' clue who you are and I only found this video thru Google giving me suggestions on my phone of news and videos that might interest me. Your even-handed and honest review of these books was refreshing. It was awesome that you are self-aware and not copping an attitude towards the genre. I have one comment on your preferences that the romance be "another plot element." In the romance genre, the expectation is that the romantic relationship *is* the primary plot. All other plot activity is secondary to the unfolding relationship. Some more rigid interpretations even say that if the romance arc is removed, there is no story. I don't feel quite so exclusionary and neither do many other romance readers. I think that while romance as a genre is okay for you, what you'd prefer is any genre that has characters developing strong feelings and have sexual attraction and in some ways acting on those emotions, but at the same time the plot of the book is about whatever external drama they are involved in, or internal drama that is not associated with the romantic relationship that is forming. This is usually described as "(whatever genre) with strong romantic elements" or "romantic sub-plot." And that is absolutely fine. Not every book has to be a romance, or have even a smidgen of romance. But knowing what you like to read is helpful for making it feel like you didn't waste your time and/or money on a book that didn't meet your needs. Not having read any of the books you reviewed, I can't speak to their plot balance or anything, but the one you liked the least may actually be better categorized as "women's fiction," but I can't say for certain. If there's infidelity in the book, it doesn't usually get classified as a romance, unless there is a compelling reason for the infidelity and still a lot of romance readers will not appreciate the infidelity, no matter what the reason. Overall, I just want to say thank you for sharing this wonderful video. I wish you many more moments of joy reading romances and other genres that you might never have considered.
I love that you're doing this!! It's such a cool idea and it really shows sometimes we're truly missing out on things we could love just because we're telling ourselves they're not for us. I'm definitely adding The Love Con to my tbr 😌
I haven't read any of these books, yet.... buut that sweater(vest? The thing on your torso with the hearts and the fuzziness) is fabulous, and also the perfect choice for this video.! 💖 🤣🤣 (I might kinda love it! ^--^)
Like you, I can’t stand romance novels if there isn’t a more substantial element to it. But I’m 67 years old and I’ve been through some of those all consuming relationships. Now I want to read about people who love living alone. Love your energy and your content. Keep up the great job.
Definitely checking out the ones you enjoyed, because I think we have very similar taste for romance books. Would love to see a adult high fantasy one for this. Maybe a bit less books then though haha. Would be a bit much for you otherwise
I think a romance you would like is a YA novel called “I Love You So Mochi” by Sarah Kuhn. It’s incredibly well done and there are a lot of other difficulties explored such as being Asian American, family strife, identity crisis, etc. The romance aspect actually had a very decent guy as the love interest who only wanted to help the main character find her true self. I also dislike romance as a genre generally but I highly enjoyed this one.
The love con sounds objectively awesome. And also Let's Play. I have sworn not to read the Love Hypothesis for reasons and everything I hear about it makes me think maybe I was right 😅
I am *_completely_* with you, about miscommunication in fiction and just finding oneself yelling at the characters to just communicate already.😅😅🙃😶🤦♀️😁
I am ADDICTED to Let's Play!! It's so good!!! There's definitely one romance I prefer over the others, and I have a sinking feeling it will not be endgame. However, the characters and art are a lot of fun! It's nor perfect, but I'm always so invested when I'm reading it!!
I was into romance books once but nowadays I just can't connect with them. The same tropes that I gushed over earlier are now a cringe fest. I get you when you say that popular books that blow up on tiktok are overhyped. I kinda fell into that trap and ended up buying a lot of extremely popular books. Turns out I didn't like them. Earlier I was a fantasy and romance reader but nowadays I am more into psychological thrillers and classics. N turns out I'm into 20th century books too. After seeing your videos and getting book recommendations from you, I started exploring different genres and now I'm so glad that I have found new tastes.
I liked Heart stopper...all the feels. Love Hypothesis was fun and yes to your Love Con love. It was a believable friends to lovers romance and I love the body positivity. Olivia Dade also writes books with a similar vibe if you are interested.
This video is one of the best parts of my day! I also find the lack of communication in books like these really frustrating, I wish there was more representation of more communication in books or at least an exploration of people trying to have more communication. I have only read Heartstopper which I enjoyed but I will definitely check out The Love Con!
i am very hyped to read the love con as well as let's play now! well done nerdy stories are the type of stories that i am always on the hunt for :D and i never read anything that has cosplay as an important element so i am excited!!
I have read Heartstopper, it is my current obsession! I always get so excited when people talk about it and I'm glad to see it here! I don't know if you have read the Embassy Row series by Ally Carter, but I would love to see that in one of these videos. The books are kind of action with some side romance. Idk how to describe it 😅 Does anyone know if these books have sex scenes? I'm just the friendly neighborhood, sex repulsed ace and like to avoid that kind of stuff.
Hey Jesse, so far the last book to Kingdom Of The Wicked it’s okay not my favorite series but I’m still trying to tough it out I’m halfway there to the end . Also great video by the way I’ll definitely keep Love Con on my books to get to but I’m very excited to read Heartstopper ❤
Love this new series! Can you call it read and rank both present tense OR read (red) and ranked both past tense, though?? Lol the tense mixing hurts my soul. 🤣
I read so many YA romance books that now I can pretty much guess how all of them will go, so it got boring and I started reading more speculative fiction and I've never looked back (except for People We Meet on Vacation, that was awesome)
Thanks for your advices, almost of all the books you talked about end up in my wishlist amazon now 🤣! I had my eyes on love hypothesis for quite some times (it is just translated in french now). The love con looks really nice, I like this kind of plot bestfriend to lover. I love your wall full of books also 😍😍! Especially the ones with the books in the horizontal position. So beautiful!
Based on some of the books you liked I think you'd love 'The Other Ones' by Fran Hart. It gives off very similar vibes to Heartstopper (It's not a graphic novel though) and I personally loved it. Do let me know if you decide to give it a try!
New series!! It's so much fun!! I'd love to see the mystery novels version (≧▽≦)b💚 I added to my list "The Love Con" and "At the End of the Matinee". But first, maybe, I will read "Twice Shy" ♪
You are SLAYING in that vest!!! Also, I'll be picking up the love con now, ty for the rec!! I feel the ick too with romance so I'm hoping it'll be a fun read 😊
That was great! I guess I should look at books outside of my favorite genre based on their own merit. My favorite genre is YA fantasy which doesn’t mean I love all YA fantasy books. Maybe that also means I might enjoys some books in other genres as well depending on the book itself, based on the writing and the characters. Something for me to consider.
Have you read People we meet on Vacation? Just curious. It is a romance book but I felt it goes into the relationship deeper than any other romance book I have read and loved it. I liked The Love Hypothesis enough (I agree with the 3 star rating) but I had issues with it because I work in research in an academic setting and the situations were so fake it drove me insane. Loved Heartstoper and was surprised to like the series more.
